KFC to sponsor Mini Cricket

Cricket South Africa on Tuesday announced that global brand KFC is its new sponsor for mini cricket, the entry point to the game. CSA CEO Gerald Majola said it was a major boost for the further growth of the game to have an international brand such as KFC on board at a critical level of the game.
"CSA has doubled cricket's capacity over the past 10 years and we are looking to accelerate this growth even further over the next decade.

"KFC has committed for five years, with an option for a further five years which is an exceptional investment in CSA through mini cricket."

"This means we can plan and expand over the next 10 years at the entry level of the sport for players, coaches and administrators," said Majola.

Managing director for KFC in Africa, Keith Warren, said his company was excited to partner Cricket South Africa on this programme.

"As a supplier to CSA and the Proteas over the last two years, we have come to develop a great admiration for the quality of the people involved in the game and the professional approach with which they tackle their roles.

"Mini Cricket is no exception and while we remain deeply respectful of the work done to date, we cannot wait to develop a plan together with CSA to take this property to its full potential."

Mini cricket is similar to Kwik cricket, as it is the first step/ introduction to the game. I must be honest it was expected as the old sponsor (Bakers) were terminated mutually. KFC has had a supplier agreement with CSA and have sponsored broadcasts for T20 cricket in South Africa (not the domestic competition). Great to see that businesses are getting involved with cricket in a bigger capacity.

@Mas, your right but it does happen if you think that MacDonalds have sponsored the Olympics, Soccer for years. It is one the most ironic things about Professional sport.

@AB mate, I tend to think along similar lines.

It just makes me wonder that is all - the likes of Maccy D's and Coke/Pepsi etc sponsoring sporting events when most governments are trying to cut down on obesity. KFC is probably one of the worst in terms of the amount of food they give you.

On the other hand, it is fresh investment and will keep the game going and as AB points out, will possibly end up in a link between the Big Bash etc

Think of the money though and I reckon it's cleaner than Murdoch's filthy dollar.

I would say a relevant point is that childhood obesity goes hand in hand with the lack of activity rather than the food products themselves.

it's a relevant point but in the case of just sponsoring them/giving them free food etc it doesn't matter because these kids are playing sport anyway. The problem is all the advertising on tv with sports. These kids aren't necessarily playing a sport and are more likely to be affected into/with obesity from fast food advertising.

Yeah, I think there is a link there, maybe relatively small in the scheme of things, but they don't spend millions making adverts and sponsoring stuff for the kids and people to go home and say 'Hey, lets have a fish salad tonight' do they. The amount of calories in Fast food like this is such that the obvious outcome over the longer term is negative. Yeah, if you only eat the crap maybe once in a blue moon the effect is negated, but they're not aiming the advertising at the likes of you and me that play sport and perhaps only eat it once every 2 or 3 months, they're looking for the types that see only the conveniance aspect to it and ignore the fact that as food goes it is dog s**t. I don't know what it's like down under, but here in the UK with 60% of adults being over-weight or obese it's a massive issue. Jobs are increasingly more difficult to come by and if Greece goes under and defaults on its debts the UK is going to be up s**t creek without a paddle and there are going to be millions and millions of people unemployed who do not pay tax into the economy. Even at the moment they're saying that 1/5th of the hospitals here in the UK are unsustainable under the current economic climate and people are now being told that they can't be treated or having to wait shed loads of time to get treatment and dying in the meantime. Part of that is the fact that there are millions of people that don't look after themselves and don't do sport and eat this crap, by the time they're in their mid 30's and even earlier the problems start to mount up. There's not a lot of positives to be taken from KFC.
 
@someblokecalleddave the original purpose of the story was to show that KFC put sponsorship into mini cricket which is the South African version of Kwik Cricket. in terms of health and wellbeing you are a 100% correct in your opinion on KFC product.
