Big Bash League 2014/15

Jacques Kallis has signed with Sydney Thunder for the next two seasons. Kallis stated that he is looking forward to playing alongside guys who he has spent most of his career playing against. He also spent time at this year's IPL champion Kolkata Knight Riders but had limited game time in the second half of the series.

In other news, Alex Hales has crossed from Adelaide Strikers to Hobart Hurriances for the 2014/15 BBL season as their first overseas player. Hales' record in T20's is fairly impressive, averaging 30.18 with the bat to compliment his strike rate of 140.34.

What's Kallis like in T20, good signing you reckon?

Well I guess he can't make them any worse..

He'll help them for sure. He's a solid without being explosive bat and more than handy with the ball. Should give them a much needed boost.

Melbourne Renegades have made some good signings, securing Matthew Wade from the Melbourne Stars and New Zealand international Jesse Ryder who has been cleared to play from his domestic side Otago. Wade signed a four year deal with the Renegades, securing his long-term future at the club after seeking greater opportunities.

SACA have also been fined $50,000 for breaching BBL contracting rules, including entering into agreements for the 2014/15 BBL season with Brad Hodge and Kieron Pollard. The club also suffered a penalty for making contact with Jono Dean. $20,000 worth of the penalty has been suspended for the next three years.

George Bailey and Ben Dunk have re-signed with Hobart Hurriances for the upcoming BBL season. Dunk has signed for the next two seasons while Bailey will spend another year at the Hurricanes.

Former Hurricane Ben Laughlin has joined Adelaide Strikers on a two year deal. He was Hobart's leading wicket-taker in the BBL last season and was ranked second overall.

Sydney Thunder have announced they'll play two of their home games at Sydney Showground Stadium in January 2015. The move comes off the back of ANZ Stadium being unavailable for cricket at that time due to the venue helping host the Asian Cup in soccer.

Sydney Showground Stadium is more commonly known at the moment as Spotless Stadium and is the primary home ground for the Greater Western Sydney Giants in the Australian Football League.

So the draw has finally been announced for the 2014/15 Big Bash League season. The tournament is eight days shorter than last season, starting a week before Christmas and finishing in late January which coincides with the school holidays period for most states and territories in Australia. Once again there are games on Boxing Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day with only one double-header on 11 January when Hobart host Perth and the Heat welcome the Sixers to the Gabba.

The BBL may be under six months away but things have started poorly for the Sydney Thunder. David Warner and Michael Clarke has ruled themselves out of the entire tournament, preferring instead to focus on Australia's hectic international schedule for the coming summer.

Warner not playing is a big blow for the Thunder with the master blaster averaging 76 with a strike rate of 181 although he did state he'd like to play in the next edition of the series. Clarke has yet to play for the Thunder in the last two seasons and has in fact never played an Australian domestic T20 game having not represented New South Wales in the time they played T20 cricket before the BBL was created.

Ryan Duffield has joined Brisbane Heat after spending last season at Perth Scorchers. Duffield plays regularly for Western Australian in first-class and one-day cricket but couldn't crack a game with the Scorchers and heads east for more opportunity.

Aidan Blizzard has left Hobart Hurricanes to play with Sydney Thunder in an effort to boost their batting line-up. Blizzard played in IPL 4 and 5 and has a career strike rate of over 140.

Simon Katich has announced his retirement from T20 cricket this morning. Katich initially left first-class cricket in June 2012 but has played the last three seasons at Perth Scorchers in the BBL and also played a handful of games for Western Australia in the Ryobi Cup domestic one-day competition last season.

"Kat" decided the time was right to call it quits, opting to end his career on a high and also give a chance for the younger players in the squad to get more opportunities. His retirement is immediate meaning he won't take part in the T20 Champions League later this season.

Katich is now a development coach and also runner for the Greater Western Sydney Giants in the Australian Football League.

Sad day for WA cricket. Katich didn't play a lot of cricket here but will always be a Western Australian boy. Shame his test career was cut short rather unfairly as he deserved to play more international cricket.

Pretty big week for signings in the Big Bash League. Kevin Pietersen has signed with Melbourne Stars for two years and then proceeded to get into a slanging match with Brisbane Heat which was played out over Twitter a couple of days ago. Pietersen labelled Brisbane as a boring city which sparked a war of words with KP saying the Big Bash shouldn't be played in Brisbane while the Heat responded by taunting Pietersen about his poor Ashes series. The sparks will fly when the Stars travel to Brisbane to face the Heat on 28 December.

Unsurprisingly, Michael Klinger has signed with Perth Scorchers after recently moving to Western Australia to further his career with the WA Warriors. Klinger was told opportunities at SA Redbacks would be hard to come by in 2014/15 so he promptly decided to pull up stumps and head elsewhere.

Cricket Australia has also announced the BBL final will be held in Canberra this season rather than the home ground of the highest placed winning semi finalist. The previous three finals have all been held at the WACA due to Perth Scorchers' dominance of the qualifying rounds however CA have opted for a left field choice this season and have decided to have the final at a neutral venue.
