I would suggest varying overspin and backspin (either flippers or sliders) in order to increase the chances of either skidding one through before he gets his bat on it (LBW) or getting a top edge which can be caught by those in close.
I haven't actually bowled as I'm in a wheelchair; I do, however, practice tossing the ball around to replicate different deliveries.
One of the consequences of my disability is small stature (including small hands) and fairly loose joints. I found that, as you suggest, I am more of a...
Long time no speak - I've been busy with other interests and their associated internet activity, but I thought I'd log in and see what the leg-spin connoisseurs thought of Tahir today. I only saw the Channel 5 highlights, but I must say I'm not impressed. His googly seems to turn better than...
Don't try to grip the ball too tightly - concentrate on flicking it hard, and you should feel the ring finger imparting a lot of revs as the ball come out of the hand.
If you coach is a finger spinner, it makes sense that he advocates a high arm action. Finger spinners need a high arm action that almost looks a bit like an inswinger as they can't bowl overspinners with a round arm.
I agree with Tumo. It sounds to me as though your coach thinks he knows more about wrist spinning than he does. As far as grip is concerned, if you can repeatedly spin the ball along the seam with good revs, how you hold it as you spin it is immaterial. On that basis, it's worth trying...
For that reason, I reckon Philpott's argument that an effective use of the big turning ball is to bowl it on leg stump after bowling overspun leggies on middle and off, varying overspin with backspin. As you say, if you pitch a big turner on off stump, it'll either be called byes or wides, or...
I'm firmly of the opinion the overspun leggie should be the stock ball, as it allows the overspinner, square-spun leggie and backspun leggie to be variations; this means that you've got the option to bowl deliveries with more overspin/less sidespin AND less overspin/more sidespin as variations...
Well, I'm no further advanced than hand-to-hand at the moment, but, even then, I find a relaxed grip and big flick gets far more revs with a far more consistent seam angle.
