Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

An ongoing thread to encompass all discussion of T20I selection - who's in the team, who should be. Players pushing for selection, those whose form merit their dropping.

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

The Big Bash starts on Monday the 28th of December, Queensland vs Victoria.

We shall see who are the newest T20 talents, and whether or not the existing ones can still cut it.

I myself don't like T20 all too much, and I'm not alone, but if Australia is going to be involved in it then we might as well be the best at it.

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

Australias best T20 side would be

Warner, Hodge, White, Hussey, Watson, Hopes, Haddin, Johnson, Nannes, Hauritz, Bracken

Unsure on Brackens future or Husseys, but atm he is still probably in the best side, such a good finisher he will be good to have there with the bigger hitters around him

Aussies lack a bit in bowling depth, but plenty of batsmen to fit into the side, but as been discussed before Michael Clarke does not belong

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

Tait and Lee would have to be in there for sure. Can't get a better fast bowling duo for T20s.

I would put Hussey down a bit lower than that. He is a great finisher and although he isn't the biggest hitter he still scores at a rate higher than the designated big hitters. I think he is best to be batting only a couple of overs right at the end, so five or six is better for him than no.4.

Johnson I don't think is the best choice as a T20 bowler, has never really been one.

Bracken will always be there as long as he is fit. Otherwise Nannes has his place to make a three way 150+ pace bowling trio with a spinner and plenty of part timers to change things up.

TBH I don't know if I like Hodge's position there. If I'm making the changes to that side that I am I think it needs another batsman in there. Clarke will probably be in there no matter what for captaincy practice, and Marsh has an outstanding T20 record. Hodge has made it in the IPL, but in a younger game does he make it there as well?

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

Assuming Lee is ever fit, which seems highly unlikely, forgot about Tait so he would be around no doubt but could only ever play one of him or Johnson. Maybe Johnson isnt so suited but the added depth to the batting helps him there especially if playing somewhere like the GABBA

As for Hodgey, he is the no1 T20 batsman in the world and is best suited to opening as he anchors the innings whilst still ending up with a great strike rate as he picks up the pace, perfect partner for the slogger in Warner

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

I don't think Warner is all slogger, just has that mode. Just want to say that.

I really like the idea, if Bracken isn't there of course, of having Nannes, Tait and Lee all bowling in tandem with each other at some point. We saw what happens when you put Tait and Lee together, making the might of NZ look even worse than it actually is, but adding another 150+ bowler in the mix, and left handed.

I know of Hodges claims to fame, but T20 is the only arena he doesn't fully compell me to pick him in a game where there are no standards set yet.

What are his Big Bash stats, not IPL?

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

Averages 43 in the Big Bash, up from his 31 in the IPL, he doesnt like Indian pitches

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

I know his dislike of Indian pitches, his IPL average would be way higher than that if it only included his South African matches.

I know he is a great player, but it just doesn't feel right to have him playing domestically. A lot better choice than Clarke obviously.

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

Averaged 41 in the IPL in South Africa and 41 for Australia in South Africa and yet they dropped him from the test team because they didnt think he would go well in South Africa...

Averaged 66 last year in the Big Bash, I cant see why you wouldnt like him for the T20 side, he is by far Australias best T20 batsman and he proves you dont have to slog to make runs and still have a damn good strike rate doing it

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

It just seems to me if they include him they are saying sorry to him for not including him in anything else, but then shove him into a format that the team hasn't even worked out for themselves.

Plus the pushing of a younger age when the team you have above as a whole seems older than the ODI team (in experience anyway) despite it being a 'young player's game'. He also doesn't have the best record playing for his country in any format, and a habit of slipping in change rooms :p

And besides Matty Hayden is by far the best T20 batsman in Australia! :D

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

My team would probably be something like this..

Warner
Watson
S.Marsh
White (c)
M.Hussey
Haddin
S.Smith
Hopes
Hauritz
Nannes
Tait

12th man Voges

Bracken in if fit.

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

Clarke is the T20 captain

Warner
Haddin
Clarke
White
S.Marsh
M.Hussey
Hopes
S.Smith
Johnson
Bracken
Nannes

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

Don't forget Lee, he's aiming for the T20 World Cup to be fully fit again, he's the best ODI bowler in Australia so you'd think that would convert to T20s easily, and it shows in the IPL. Unfortunately he had a Gayle attack that everyone remembers him by.

I may be stretching out on a limb here... but Symonds plays full time T20 for Queensland. Would it at all be possible to see him play again in this format? Of course only if he gets some games in to get his form up.

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

Marsh would have to open the batting with Warner, no point having one of the best Twenty20 opening batsman down the order.

Symonds won't play cricket for Australia ever again.

I'd pick,

Marsh
Warner
White
*Clarke
Hussey
+Haddin
Watson
Hauritz
Johnson
Bracken
Tait

12th Voges

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

Thats assuming a bloke with an average of 17 and strike rate of only 110 is worthy of a spot anyway, then again if Clarke is captain
then anything is possible

Was having a look through some T20I batting stats and wow are they poor for people most would put in the side like Watson, Haddin, Hopes and Marsh. Everyone already knows Clarkes are shocking

The best players have been Warner, White, Ponting, Hussey x 2 and Hodge

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

You can't really go on the Australian stats yet. There have been so few T20s with a side that looks even half set, every match is about trialling the next big thing for Test cricket and putting a young player in that could do well, but not picked on merit. Either that or making up for players that should have been picked in other forms, ie Hodge and Nofke.

It's time this form is taken seriously. It's right that nobody likes it, but it is here to stay. I think it's time to drop everyone in the side and pick people based on their Big Bash experience.

Warner, White, Husseys, Marsh, Watson, and Hopes would make up my batting, with Johnson, Bracken, Tait, Hauritz my bowling. (in no particular order with one left out for Haddin)

Then I would cycle in players like Henriques, Steve Smith, Mitch Marsh and whoever else is going very well in the current Big Bash depending on who in the international side is struggling and the pitch they are on.

Then I would bring in Lee when fit (T20 WC hopefully) and cycle in bowlers like Nannes (who isn't going the greatest of late) and the likes of that group of seeming T20 specialists.

I've said it before, I would love to see Lee, Tait and Nannes all bowl together, double headed extreme pace combos have been seen before, but not triple. Add together with Watson and Hopes with Hauritz and you have yourself plenty of bowling variety with different extremes. Wouldn't it be great to see 3/5s of the allotted overs being bowled 150+ from a conventional action, crazy sling action and a left armer?

If you do that, it will be impossible to play Test and T20 cricket for Australia.

I noticed that after I said it. I don't quite mean it as literally as that.

Just that T20 in Australia started off extremely hit and giggle. They took the ODI side into that format and just mucked around with putting microphones on players and letting the crowd get involved (which IMO is all T20 should be, not serious, but this isn't the time) and it lead to people being picked that perhaps shouldn't have been.

Take Clarke for example. He probably wouldn't even make the NSW team for T20s. It's just he was brought over from the ODI team and kept for good looks with the captaincy. Now he holds up a spot.

What I mean is that it has to be separated and taken a bit more seriously if the Aussie team is ever going to beat any other team. Just need to step back and see that if you start from scratch there are some very strong competitors at domestic level, but because maybe they have no hope of getting to ODIs they aren't picked.

ODIs and T20s need to be separated like Tests and ODIs are now.

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

I really think we shouldnt be selecting players like Clarke as captain if he isnt a top11 T20 player. We should be selecting the proven best T20 batsmen and bowlers from the state tournament, preferbly big-hitting ones :D

So here's the team I would most like to see represent Australia:

1: S Marsh [obvious choice, still in awe over his century against NSW]
2: D Warner [doubt anyone would disagree with playing him for T20 matches]
3: S Watson [best all-rounder in the country]
4: C White [arguably one of the best hitters in the world, captain of the side]
5: M Hussey [if Australia find themselves in a sticky situation, Hussey is ure to get them it out]
6: G Bailey [proven batsmen as Tassie's captain]
7: M Marsh [the future of australian cricket and i think the earlier he's given a go the better]
8: T Paine [To Have this guy at 8 in the batting order shows how good the batting credentials of this team is]
9: S Smith [excellent batsmen as well as being the future of australia's spin bowling]
10: P Siddle [takes wickets and is hard to score runs off]
11: S Tait [is perfectly suited to bowling 4 over matches]

12th: M Henriques
13th: A Voges

A very batter friendly side, but with All-rounders Watson, M Marsh (can bowl at 140+) and S Smith more than capable of bowling 4 overs, I didnt see the need for more genuine bowlers. The only thing I'd be tempted to change would be replacing Bailey with Henriques for more bowling strength.
I the T20 form of the game is the perfect way to introduce young players to the australian side, and give the older players a break.
