County Cricket 2010

Season is upon us once again and as always there is probably more to talk about in terms of what may happen in the future as to what will actually happen on the pitch.

To start us off, a list of ins and outs from the various county teams:

Derbyshire

Overseas player: Chris Rogers (Australia), Loots Bosman (South Africa, for Twenty20)

Ins: Robin Peterson (South Africa, KPK), Steffan Jones (Somerset), Lee Goddard (Durham), Mark Footitt (Nottinghamshire)

Outs: Stephen Stubbings (REL), Dan Birch (REL), Dom Telo (REL), James Pipe (RET), Wavell Hinds (REL), Mark Lawson (REL), Charl Langeveldt (REL), Stuart Law (REL)

Other news: Derbyshire will become the "Falcons" in one-day cricket in 2010, having previously been the "Scorpions" (1999-2004) and "Phantoms" (2005-2009).

Durham

Overseas player: Albie Morkel (South Africa, for Twenty20)

Ins: Michael Richardson (MCC Young Cricketers), Ben Stokes (YTH)

Outs: Lee Goddard (Derbyshire), Paul Wiseman (RET)

Other news: Durham hope to sign New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor for Twenty20 cricket.

Essex

Overseas player: Danish Kaneria (Pakistan, from 29 April for first part of season)

Ins: Billy Godleman (Middlesex), Max Osborne (YTH), Michael Comber (YTH)

Outs: Varun Chopra (Warwickshire), Jason Gallian (RET), Jahid Ahmed (REL), James Middlebrook (Northants)

Possible signings: Essex have missed out on India all-rounder Yusuf Pathan, who they had agreed to sign for Twenty20 cricket, after a change of heart from the Indian board. Coach Paul Grayson wants to sign "a strike bowler" after missing out on Matthew Hoggard, and also wants "a world-class spinner" as cover while Kaneria is on tour with Pakistan.

Other news: Essex's former Zimbabwe star Grant Flower expects to end his playing career after the 2010 county season as he takes up the role of Zimbabwe's batting coach. Meanwhile, former Middlesex seamer Chris Silverwood has joined Essex as bowling coach.

Glamorgan

Overseas player: Mark Cosgrove (Australia); Shaun Tait (Australia, for Twenty20)

Ins: David Brown (Gloucestershire), James Allenby (Leicestershire), Nick James (ex-Warwickshire, has signed a contract after successful trial spell)

Outs: Alex Wharf (RET), Ryan Watkins (REL), Mike O'Shea (REL)

Gloucestershire

Overseas player: James Franklin (New Zealand)

Ins: Jon Batty (Surrey), David Payne (YTH), Chris Dent (YTH)

Outs: Stephen Adshead (Herefordshire), Grant Hodnett (REL), Matthew Gitsham (REL), David Brown (Glamorgan), Craig Spearman (REL), Tom Stayt (REL)

Possible signings: New Zealand bowler Kyle Mills has stated an interest in playing for Gloucestershire in the 2010 season.

Other news: Gloucestershire's former New Zealand batsman Hamish Marshall has held talks about representing Ireland, for whom he qualifies to play from April 2011.

Hampshire

Overseas player: Rangana Herath (Sri Lanka, first part of season); Ajantha Mendis (Sri Lanka, second half of season), Shahid Afridi (Pakistan, for Twenty20), Abdul Razzaq (Pakistan, for Twenty20)

Outs: Imran Tahir (Warwickshire), John Crawley (RET), Billy Taylor (REL), Tom Burrows (REL), Tom Parsons (REL), Chris Morgan (REL), Chris Tremlett (Surrey)

Other news: Hampshire will become the "Royals" in one-day cricket in 2010 as part of a link-up with Indian franchise Rajasthan, having been the "Hawks" since counties adopted one-day nicknames in 1999.

Kent

Overseas player: Malinga Bandara (Sri Lanka, from 20 May)

Ins: Adam Ball (YTH), Dewald Nel (Scotland)

Outs: Martin Saggers (RET), Ryan McLaren (REL)

Possible signings: Australia's Stuart Clark was originally signed to fill the gap before Bandara arrives, but will not be coming for fitness reasons. Team director Paul Farbrace has another overseas seamer lined up instead.

Lancashire

Overseas player: Ashwell Prince (South Africa, first part of season), Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka, after Prince departs)

Ins: Stephen Moore (Worcestershire), Luke Procter (YTH), Gary Montgomery, Daren Powell (KPK, subject to visa and registration)

Outs: Mal Loye (Northants), Steven Mullaney (Nottinghamshire), Francois du Plessis (REL)

Other news: Lancashire have failed with an appeal to bring back Francois du Plessis for a third summer at Old Trafford in 2010 due to changes in immigration criteria. Meanwhile, international duty may delay Sangakkara's arrival, or force Lancashire to look elsewhere.

Leicestershire

Overseas player: Andrew McDonald (Australia), Brad Hodge (Australia, for Twenty20)

Ins: Matthew Hoggard (Yorkshire), Will Jefferson (Nottinghamshire), James Benning (Surrey)

Outs: Iain O'Brien (Middlesex), James Allenby (Glamorgan), HD Ackerman (REL), Boeta Dippenaar (REL)

News: Claude Henderson, the first Kolpak signing in county cricket, has been granted British citizenship.

Middlesex

Overseas player: Iain O'Brien (New Zealand); Adam Gilchrist (Australia, for group stages of Twenty20); David Warner (Australia, for Twenty20)

Ins: Iain O'Brien (Leicestershire), Paul Stirling (Ireland), Scott Newman (Surrey), Tom Smith (Sussex), Josh Davey (YTH), Toby Roland-Jones, Pedro Collins (Surrey, KPK)

Outs: Nick Compton (Somerset), Billy Godleman (Essex), David Nash (RET), Alan Richardson (Worcestershire), Chris Silverwood (REL, has joined Essex as bowling coach), Murali Kartik (Somerset), Ben Scott (Worcestershire, loan starting on 3 April for minimum of four weeks)

Other news: Two Indian stars will not be playing Twenty20 cricket for Middlesex - the county have cancelled the contract of Yuvraj Singh because of his international commitments, and Sachin Tendulkar also turned down the chance to join. The county are hopeful of signing pace bowler Makhaya Ntini as a Kolpak player. They have the option to recall Scott from his loan spell if first-choice wicketkeeper John Simpson is injured or loses form.

Other news: Chawla's call-up to India's World Twenty20 squad may affect his availability. Surrey will be the "Lions" again in one-day cricket in 2010, as they were between 1999 and 2005, having also been the "Brown Caps" (2006-2009) since counties adopted one-day nicknames in 1999.

Warwickshire

Overseas player: Imran Tahir (Pakistan) - subject to fitness tests and work permit

Ins: Varun Chopra (Essex), Imran Tahir (Hampshire)

Outs: Tony Frost (RET), James Anyon (Sussex)

Worcestershire

Overseas player: Phil Jaques (Australia, first half of season), Shakib Al Hasan (Bangladesh, from July onwards, subject to completion of visa arrangements), Steve Smith (Australia, for Twenty20 - subject to clearance from Cricket Australia)

Ins: Ben Cox (YTH), Jack Shantry (YTH), Alan Richardson (Middlesex), Ben Scott (Middlesex, loan starting on 3 April for minimum of four weeks), James Cameron (UKP)

Out: Steven Davies (Surrey), Gareth Batty (Surrey), Simon Jones (Hampshire), Stephen Moore (Lancashire), Ian Fisher (REL), Mehraj Ahmed (REL), Josh Knappett (REL), Kabir Ali (Hampshire)

Possible signings: Director of cricket Steve Rhodes is concerned about their lack of spin options until Shakib arrives in mid-season, and may look for an additional spinner.

Other news: Scott's loan deal may run until July when teenage wicketkeeper Ben Cox is free of school commitments, but Middlesex have the option to recall him if number one keeper John Simpson is injured or loses form.

Yorkshire

Overseas player: Daryl Tuffey (New Zealand, for first part of season - although he may not be available after breaking his hand in March); Ryan Harris (Australia, after Indian Premier League finishes, although Cricket Australia have asked Yorkshire to rest him until the end of May); Herschelle Gibbs (South Africa, for Twenty20)

Ins: None

Outs: Michael Vaughan (RET), Simon Guy (REL), Deon Kruis (RET), Matthew Hoggard (Leicestershire), Chris Taylor (RET)

Possible signings: The county hope to sign West Indian paceman Tino Best as a replacement overseas player because of Tuffey's injury and Harris's international commitments.

Re: County Cricket 2010

So you know the key for the terms in brackets:

KPK: Kolpak contract, REL: released, RET: retired, YTH: from youth teams, EUP: European Union passport, UKP: recently-obtained UK passport.

Re: County Cricket 2010

More of a bums on seats signing than anything I feel.

Get the marquee names in and hope that tickets sell on the back of them.

Re: County Cricket 2010

Double post!!!

On a similar note, Lancashire are in talks with Younis Khan. I guess signing the likes of Younis and Symonds makes sense as they are no longer in the international game and are 'guns for hire'.

Both still have the skills to make a difference at county level but it does come at a price. Namely, it takes a spot from a potential England player.

Re: County Cricket 2010

First round of games over and some positives to take. All games finished in a positive result - no draws which must be a rare thing and could mean that the revamped points system will work.

Two or three of the games had tense finishes, including one which was won off the 5th ball of the final over. Games need to be competitive if the public are going to care.

News coverage also seems to be bouyant but I'm sure that'll change once the Football World Cup gets into full swing.

Re: County Cricket 2010

A good win for Yorkshire. I'm interested to see how their young squad goes this year, particularly Bresnan and Rashid.

As they say, a strong Yorkshire is a strong England.

Re: County Cricket 2010

Bairstow is another Yorkshire youngster to watch. 13 or so first class games with 7 half centuries. A lot of responsibilty on him as he keeps as well but he looks a good prospect.

Re: County Cricket 2010

I was disappointed (but definitely not surprised) to see Surrey crumble on the final day against Derbyshire. We only had to bat out 80-odd overs, yet that appeared to be far beyond our team's ability. Ramprakash was out for 0 - once Groenewald clean-bowled him, that was when I thought Surrey were in trouble.

A long season of confusion and a clueless, poster-boy captain beckons :/
