Cricket Helmets

Having seen some fairly strong views on this topic I was wondering what others think about cricket helmets and their use in the modern game. I'm not talking from a safety point of view as it's pretty clear that they make the game safer (especially for youngsters).

Do you think that they help youngsters or hinder them in terms of skill and learning the game? Do helmets make them lazy with their shots as they feel an that due to the fibre glass and metal perched on their heads they can play later or is that a good thing? Do they give extra confidence and is this a good thing?

Have helmets helped to breed a more aggressive cricketer, as seen by the increase in scoring rates in recent years?

Would bowlers like Trueman been as effective if helmets were around during their careers?

Re: Cricket Helmets

i believe helmets DO give extra confidence... especially against pace bowlers.. your are right in sayin that it makes the batsmen a little more aggressive.... this could either be good or bad... depending on the discipline of the batsmen will depend on whether or not the added confidence has an adverse affect....

helmets make it harder for the modern bowler to intimmidate the batsmen as the batsmen knows the chance of SERIOUS injury is lower then it would b without a helmet...

i believe great past bowlers still would have been as effective as the pace and accuracy still would have hindered the batsman... just look at brett lee... he still intimmidates batsmen, and the protective gear available to the modern batsmen is incredible....

this is all personal opinion :)

Re: Cricket Helmets

i dont like helmets but the laws of our club say that we have to use helmets its sucks i no helmets are distracting

Re: Cricket Helmets

i HATE batting without a helmet.... always worried about that bouncer coming up.... i dnt notice the helmet when batting...

Re: Cricket Helmets

:D I am very much for helmets. The better the quality the happier. I think it is right to enforce the wearing of helmets for younger players, it should assist in keeping their eye on the ball all the way as there is no excuse to shy away.
However, I have seen that generally juniors don't like helmets because the helmet is too big, too small, not theirs or poorly maintained. I would suggest a helmet is the second piece of kit any junior cricketers parent buys after the abdominal protector (very important, even female cricketers need some protection and my Army Ladies wear hockey goalkeepers abdo protectors, but that's a different story) if your child is playing hard ball cricket, get them a helmet that fits. Treat it with the respect it deserves, it could save your life...Train in it and get used to it, as an helmet i suseful against spin as well as pace. It's great to get down and sweep a spinner and watch the ball all the way in and all the way to the boundary.

Re: Cricket Helmets

Being a fast bowler and a tailend batsman, I can safely say that I am conflicted on this topic. However, I believe that helmets are a good necessity for cricket. They discourage fear of the cricket ball, which inevitably leads to more people becoming good batsmen, rather than people who back away from the ball.

As noted earlier, they are good for even good batsmen as they encourage such shots as the slog sweep and the hook stroke. These strokes aid scoring rates and yet, with the arm, chest and upper abdomen often unprotected, a bouncer still brings a fair amount of fear.

Helmets are necessary to save lives and nothing should prioritise over that.

Re: Cricket Helmets

It brings up the question; helmet or no helmet for juniour keepers?

I reckon u10s and u12s need helmets keeping all the time as they aren't usually specialist keepers and don't even know the basics, but in u14s you usually have a specialist keeper, and I think especially against the fast bowlers they shouldn't have to, our competition makes them wear one, but I reckon for u14s they should only wear helmets when they are up close, but from u16s up they should have the choice, as many of them keep in colts or 4ths games in u16s.

Re: Cricket Helmets

Ah the wicket keeper, this I believe is not just about the age or ability of the keeper. Even in the modern game you see international keepers wearing helmets when standing up, I have even seen a County keeper wearing a helmet whilst standing back. This was due to a county game being played on an 'out ground' with a below standard outfield and the wicket was misbehaving.

The helmet encourages you to keep your eye on the ball, something that is very important to both batsman and keepers, so anything that assist's you in developing your game and becoming a better player should be strongly encouraged.

Re: Cricket Helmets

Seeing as I posted the topic I'd better post my thoughts.

Helmets are a great thing and as leggeb4 says can help batsman to focus due to the narrower field of vision. They can also negate the nervousness when playing risky shots, such as the sweep or hooking\pulling.

As for keeping, I feel that they'll become an everyday part of the keepers kitbag when standing up and even when standing back in some cases. I'm sure that there will a modified version along soon for this purpose (if not already).

Re: Cricket Helmets

Very true, if it makes it better for the batsman, than it must be good. As for keepers, I know how difficult it can to stand-up with a normal helmet on. The Yorkshire keeper wore a hockey face-mask, horrible but it assisted him in doing his job. Masuri do a keepers helmet, with the back shaved away to help keepers head position. Paull Nixon even adapted a helmet by cutting out the back of his helmet, this probably prompted Masuri to develop their helmet.

Whichever is true, what you can find or use to help 'how silly you look', if it works and does the job, than that's part of cricket develoment. Besides, if your crazy enough to keep wicket, then your crazy enough to try new ideas.

Re: Cricket Helmets

I'll have to have to keep an eye out for the Masuri helmet, sounds like it's worth a look.

As for the Yorkshire player, I'm guessing you mean Simon Guy:

Could be the way forward although it would need modifying somewhat I feel.

I could not agree more; on both counts. Check the helmet at the beginning of each season; for fit and stitching.

I encourage my guys to keep their use personal and not loan to others... on both counts :D

Re: Cricket Helmets

helmets are helmets
theres no real big deal with them i don think
except that their distracting when batting
