England cut Zimbabwe cricket ties

After years of fudging around the issue, finally common sense has prevailed and the UK government have 'ordered' the ECB to cut ties with Zimbabwe cricket.

The England and Wales Cricket Board has announced it has suspended links with Zimbabwe Cricket.

Culture Secretary Andy Burnham handed a letter to the ECB clarifying Prime Minister Gordon Brown's stance on his views on Zimbabwe's tour next summer.

"The government has made a clear instruction that Zimbabwe's tour scheduled for 2009 should be cancelled," said an ECB statement.

The Zimbabwe cricket team has been in decline for years now, as well as the first class game in the country thanks to the large amount of government meddling. Until things are sorted out there for the good, I really can't see how Zimbabwe can be involved on the international scene.

Only problem is we can't ban teams from coming for international tournaments surely, like the Twenty20 in England later this year. So we can't ban them for that otherwise we won't be able to host the tournament.

That is a point but considering the world wide condemnation being directed at Zimbabwe, the ICC may well be forced into acting and banning them from playing.

But the ICC have never shown any intention of doing that. They cut them from test cricket because they were not good enough, not because of politics.

In the current climate it may be different. They will at least have to broach the subject and debate it properly for once - the biggest stumbling block is that they tend to support the Asian bloc who in turn wield their power and support Zimbabwe.

I gather the ICC are discussing it seriously next week in Dubai. Lets hope they see sense and England can keep the tournament with Zim excluded.

It sounds cruel in that you're punishing the cricketers in order to make a point to a corrupt government but the sad truth is, is that sport and politics are linked.

Politics im afraid, we cant be seen to support them in anyway while they are doing what their doing!
