Off spin

Re: Off spin

According to EA Sports' Cricket 07 computer game, the teesra is an off-spinner's delivery which starts off like a normal off break ball but, after release, drifts slowly in to the batsman before pitching and turning at an angle while picking up speed and bouncing higher than a normal delivery. This is particularly useful if bowled just away from a right handed batsman's leg stump, as he would often be unprepared and may play the shot too late.

Might be what it is. All seems a bit strange to me.

Off topic - but those little animations on Wiki are great!

Re: Off spin

I'm totally confused now. I've just been looking at Youtube and Mularitharan is a right handed bowler. Is he an off spinner because he primarily bowls finger spin and turns the ball from off to towards leg?

He is an off spinner. I've always thought of Murali as a bowler bowling wrist spin with an action that is primarily finger spin.

Re: Off spin

Yeah you're right he's an Off spinner - my ignorance. So he's a finger spinner, but it seems that in his past he has bowled Leg Spin on occassions see - you tube and type in "Murali shane warne" there's a clip there where he's bowling Leg Spin and the commentators are questioning whether he might be bowling flippers and other variations - he's a talented bloke!

Re: Off spin

"The first time anyone in Australia saw Murali bowl, he delivered one over before lunch to Allan Border in a President's XI warm-up [game] - and we all looked stunned.

"We asked AB what he was bowling, and AB said he was a leg-spinner. We eventually realised he was bowling a wrist spin version of off-spin," said ex-Sri Lanka coach Tom Moody.

Maybe that helps a little?

Re: Off spin

He uses his wrist a lot rather than his fingers.
When batting against him; if his wrist position is observed closely;then we can mark out the doosra easily :)

Re: Off spin

One of the accepted thoughts about offspin, as i have heard it, is that one of your major weopens is variation. just look at all the good finger spinners, they all use a lot of variation. they dont keep using the same delivery again and again

Re: Off spin

Exactly.
Murali in one of the interview held in Australia told that he wanted to bowl six different type of deliveries to the batsmen;just to keep him guessing and confused.
That is a strategy we spinners have to try and keep working on it.

Ignore the leg spin bit, Muralitharan is an off spinner who just tried leg spin for that one match. Although his stock ball is an off spinner, he uses his wrist and fingers to spin the ball and has a 'doosra' which spins the way of a leg break. This is bowled similarly to his off break which makes it hard to pick. It is effectively a off spinner's googly in the way it is bowled.

Timed Out, EA Sports' definition of the teesra could not be further from what it is.

Re: Off spin

Murali is such a talant. His name needs only be mentioned and batsmen get sweaty palms. Murali's name opens up the biggest debate as well, chucker or legal master of spin?

I'd say he's legal, which has been proved. The Teesra is one difficult ball to master for any top flight spinner, The thing with Murali is that with his wrist doing most of the world, the ball remains behind his wrist so its only at the point of release does the batsmen get a look in, by that time, he needs to have picked which way its spinning. The time frames dont match, by the time the batmens even thought of playing something, his middle stump is set out of its hole and Murali goes running.

He has one simple life Murali doesnt he ;)

Re: Off spin

id say hes legal, you just cant play for long enough to take 700 wickets and have an illegal action. and if the ICC consider it legal than thats good enough for me

Re: Off spin

Lets get this thread to-the-top.

Come on, there is surely other keen offies out there? I appreciate it doesn't possess the same attraction as the perceived-to-be-exciting leg spin, but it is in my humble opinion you have to have greater mental skill in order to be a successful *conventional* offie.

I'd welcome any other input from off-spinners particularly as I'm keen to release pressure on my batting by proving more of an asset with the ball.

Re: Off spin

I'm sure there are plenty of other off spinners out there, indeed, it's something I am going to be working on in nets this year as I think my back may well have had it when it comes to pace bowling.

Re: Off spin

Yeah im the same, i just get too sore after bowling a bit of pace

I can dart the ball and flight it, but does anyone know of any other variations that are possible for some one who doesnt have ridiculously flexible wrsits

Re: Off spin

Yeh I bowl Off-spin in the backyard and occasionally in the nets, and I must say I'm alright for a pace bowler bowling spin.

Umm, Jimmy, tried the arm-ball?

Place your index finger down the seam and middle finger around the ball and try to make it swing outwards, so put he shiny side on the inside and slightly point the seam to first slip, but I must say it is very easy to pick.

Re: Off spin

off spin is good
i can do off spin but im very rarely used for off spin (im a pace bowler plus we have 5 spinners in our team anyway) but i think off spins great i do it rarely but i use it

Re: Off spin

Same, but some time i have to bowl it. this is simply because im a specialist batsmen and whenever i bat for a long time i loose the suppleness in my fingers essential for pace bowling, and i always end up spraying it all over the place after a hard day with the willow
