I can't speak for Ormond but you would think winning the last 3(?) Hatch Shields has to hold them in good stead. Some the elite 15yo's will no doubt go on to Premier at some point. But, under the points system Ormond will be well placed once the grind of Premier cricket sees them head back to their local area. I think Turfie is more likely referring to offering cash to more mature players, I'm sure Turfie will elaborate unless that part was why he deleted his comment.

It wasn't a bag on Ormond as there are some great people there, it's more the way that subbies are going down the EPL model.

Probably varies from Premier club to club and I am limiting my comments to kids aged 15- 17 that leave their hard wicket clubs for turf that SECA (and it seems DVCA) clubs are so sore about.

Yeah mate, much better to be fodder for a Premier 3rd or 4th XI travelling away to Geelong, Frankston, Cranbourne, Greenvale for a Saturday/Sunday game.

I can't speak for what goes on in the Bayside region, but over here, the 'elite' kids are introduced to the Pathway system as u14's, the Craig Shield mainly comprising u15's who were not a year earlier selected for the Pathway. That is why I think a club that intends to rely on Craig Shield players may not find all that many become top notch subbies players.

In the SE, Ormond, just like Caulfield, Malvern, Brighton, Oakleigh, Mt Waverley, Noble Park (not sure about Moorabbin or Elsternwick) all run stand alone junior programs. Ormond won't be reliant on their Hatch squads to field 4 sides. From a Hatch squad of 13ish players, you always see the full range of outcomes (1) back to their local club, (2) off to Premier, (3) transition to Subbies. For some of the above clubs, their own juniors make up a significant component of their Hatch squad.

I have had the misfortune of dealing with Grenville and witnessed Beshara totally losing self control v Yarraville a few seasons ago being reported for his efforts. Neither should be considered by a struggling club.

FORMER Mt Waverley premiership coach Romain Grenville has joined Moorabbin as its new First XI captain.

And the Binners have appointed ex-Sri Lankan Test player Saliya Ahangama as senior coach as they look to shake off a few seasons of struggle in Sub-District cricket.

Grenville steered Mt Waverley to the 2015-16 premiership, peeling off 654 runs at 38.5 and taking 17 wickets.

He also top scored with 43 in the grand final.

But he departed the club a few rounds into the 2016-17 season, crossing to Murrumbeena in Cricket Southern Bayside.

Moorabbin president David Walstab said Grenville had committed for two years.

“Romain’s experience will be invaluable to the club and we hope to recruit new and past players to join him in making MCC a competitive club in all grades in the coming seasons,’’ he said.

“Romain seems to have an instant impact wherever he plays and we hope that he will greatly assist MCC in achieving our short-term goals over the next two seasons.’’

Ahangama is returning to the Binners after a previous stint as senior coach.

He also is a former coach of Premier clubs Prahran and Hawthorn Monash University. Ahangama played three Test matches, all against India in 1985, and collected 19 wickets at 19.33.

He takes over from Moorabbin star Michael Moss, who returned to the club last season. Moss has agreed to stay on as a specialist batting coach.

Moorabbin’s performances were so poor in 2017-18 that some Subbies observers were questioning if they should remain in the competition.

In February VSDCA president Phil O’Meara admitted he was concerned about the club. But the Subbies executive has been encouraged with recent developments at Moorabbin, including the return of a number of life members.

Walstab said he and Binners life member Alan Marion met VSDCA officials in early May and told them the club was committed to staying in the competition.

“We received a very good hearing from the executive and have been put on notice that the club has to become competitive on and off the field immediately to ensure our existence in Subbies cricket continues,’’ he said.

“Phil O’Meara and (Subbies secretary) Ken Hilton have been very supportive of myself and the club to turn things around in the right direction.

“I’m fully aware that the club needs support from its senior existing and past players, junior players and parents, life members and supporters to make Moorabbin a success in the coming seasons and trust we get the support at all our matches and social functions throughout the year.

“My plan is to ensure the senior and junior segments operate a lot closer together in the coming seasons, not only from a playing perspective but a social perspective as well. Something that has been lacking for quite a while at the club. The theme for the club is ‘Moorabbin on the Rise’.’’

These young lads will do well at Ormond then in a few years Caulfield,South Caulfield and Bentleigh will come knocking and offer them good coin and most will go and then they will be to square 1

Romain Grenville is he a relation to Mark Grenville who played for a lot of clubs down in the MPCA?
