Yank pro baseballer dedicated to cricket

"The management of the New York [pro baseball] Club today will request
Ward [John Montgomery Ward, star 19th c. pro baseballer] to stop his
practice at cricket. It is claimed that it interferes with his batting. Ward is practicing
to play cricket in Australia this Fall [during pro baseball tour to Australia].
Capt. Ewing asked him to stop a few days ago, but he refused."
(New York Times, August 15, 1888, p.3)

[Ward top scored for the Yank pro baseballers in their drawn match with
Australian cricketers in January, 1889]

Does anyone care??

I cared until I saw it was in the 1800's. Now I don't care. Doesn't have the same effect without the racial slurs and ethnic venom that is usually part and parcel of the posts

Re: Yank pro baseballer dedicated to cricket

i hear ya swami and i agree. moved to the local forum since we don't have a 'where are they now- Yank baseball players told not to play cricket' forum.

Think American perceptions of cricket vis-a-vis baseball any different now
than in 1880s? Think the negative cricket stereotypes Americans had in 1880s
any different than today? Think if some pro baseballers today tried cricket
they'd feel the same way as Ward did in 1880s? Does anyone care what happened to those convicts
the Pommies dumped on that big desert island in 1788?
