I had some decisions to make about the content for today and will be doing a Ashes preview in the near future from a neutral perspective. However my topic today is one which is more business related than cricket.

For those of you interested, Cricket SA has just agreed very silently at first and quickly at that a new clothing sponsor for the national team. However, with the track record which have occurred in the past it seems a tad odd, as how things happened.

For those interested (just for the record I am not employed by any of these companies and are basing my opinion on observations).
South Africa has had a fair amount of clothing sponsors; however a concern is that some of these companies have gone into bankruptcy post sponsorship.

It all started with adidas, who wanted more advertising for their product but got a cold shoulder from the board. Then Admiral who was involved at the time with the ECB became the new sponsor. They had some ICC issues over logo placement I seem to remember and then supplied the local franchises (Gauteng, Boland) with kit and then went bust.

Out of nowhere Hummel, a Swedish football clothing manufacturer came on board for the national team. They only did the national team, academy, A Team, Women’s Team. The franchises were provided kit from Canterbury. Canterbury since has gone into liquidation and Canterbury International has had to step into stop court cases via rugby union.

Then just before the IPL started, an internet news service announces that Reebok will be the new kit sponsor as of the First of May. This seems to make sense as South Africa will be doing a lot of travel to the sub continent. The deal is for 3 years and valued at $1.5 mil in total. Subsequently Sri-Lanka has also inked a deal with them.
Do not get me wrong, it is great that an international brand has signed a lucrative deal with Cricket South Africa, just keep in mind that Reebok is owned by Adidas. So it has gone the full circle.

I am aware that Vodafone will not renew their sponsorship with the ECB. I really hope that all the various board have checked the contracts with the various sponsors due to the recession..

Till next week..
