Default The greatest fielder of all time!

I've seen plenty of lists for the greatest batsman, bowler etc but never for the greatest fielder.

I'm thinking that this will be dominated by players from the modern era but we must include the likes of Sobers, Roger Harper or Eknath Solkar (with his rate of almost 2 catches per test!).

Coming up to date and we have to look at the likes of Jonty Rhodes, Mark Waugh, Paul Collingwood and Herschelle Gibbs - they have all shown over the years that catches do indeed win matches, or at the very least can turn them in your favour.

Whether a god in the slips or a panther in the out field who would you pick in an all time XI of fielders?

No doubt...Mark Waugh.

The younger Waugh was the best fielder Australia had in the 90's and early 2000's.

He had it all. He could field at second slip and take awesome catches (That 1999 Wold Cup catch in the final was mind blowing). I can't remember grassing one.

He was a great in close fielder, some of the catches off Shane Warne's bowling have been magnificent. His reflexes were second to none.

He was the best general fielder I ever saw. He is a mixture of Andrew Symonds/Paul Collingwood/Mark Taylor.

Has to be Jonty Rhodes. Not only did he take brilliant catches but also saved a lot of runs in the outfield and effected run outs. He had a batting average of 35 but he saved at least 10-15 runs in the outfield which made him a pretty good player.

Damien Martyn? What? He wasn't that good a fielder. He was decent, but no where near as good as the greats. Michael Bevan? There have been better.

What about Andrew Symonds? An all round great fielder. Athleticism, strength and agility. I would also throw Hamish Marshall in there, he is a class fielder.

Andrew Symonds/ Ricky Ponting, not sure whos better, Punter is better with those catches, and Symonds is deadly accurate with run outs. So im unsure!

I have just two names for who I think are the best fielders.

2. How can you miss out Michael Clarke, he has a rocket arm and is absolutely rapid in the outfield. Many even think he has a better arm in the infield than Symonds. From what I have seen of him, he is the second best infielder I have seen.

1. Jonty Rhodes is without a doubt the best fielder I have seen. Nothing ever seemed to go past him in his backward/cover point region and a mistake would come at a rate of 1 per 100 matches. Some of the catches he took were breathtaking and simply defied gravity.

Even within India, I think Suresh Raina outperformed him in the field consistantly.
