Re: McGain is hopeless?
i believe both offies and leggies should be equal when chosing impartially for a spinner. it just happens to be that leggies will often be better as obviously the leg spin action imparts a lot more spin, flight and various drifts on the ball, but that is not to say that an offie cannot do it, it just takes a seriously skilled offie to get the same impact as a not so good leggie.
leg spin is naturally just a better way to spin, but if you can get an off spinner like murali who can spin it either way just as much as a leggie, plus have so many different variations, then they are definately the better spinner. off spin is much better to keep economical as well, and as the australian quicks are often quite expensive, having an off spinner may help to keep the runs down. who ever is best at the time should get it... no reserving spots for leggies or offies.
what ever happened to dan cullen and cullen bailey? werent they supposed to be the 'next big spinners' after warne? i havent heard about them at all lately.

Yes Dave, but we can't keep topping up this Australian team with 30+ year olds.
McGain would be lucky to get a year in the circuit, which leads us to this dilemma in just one year's time.
He is too old, and that is why he hasn't been given another look. He was given one chance, but ultimately, the selectors seem to agree with my philosophy, that they don't want to have the same problem again in such a short amount of time, we need stability for the team to prosper, so sadly throwing in 37 year old spinners isn't the answer.

unless his name is shane warne, your right though, IMO it was only public pressure that got him picked in the 1st place, it was never going to go anywhere, great leg spinners are great, average leg spinners are very ordinary, he may have done a reasonable job against state players, but cmon, this isnt state cricket, mcgain was to slow through the air to trouble frontline batsman, at that pace (without turning it heaps) an inch to full or an inch to short, well, you"ve all seen what happened, im not sure why this argument is still going TBH. it seams we had to have a leg spinner, no matter how good, bad or old he was, i think we were spoiled with warne, then when mcgill started taking wkts everyone thought we would allways have a leggie.

Yep, good call. We need to move on, and if we don't have a tweaker good enough, so be it. The team will need to do better in other areas and fight for their wickets like teams have had to do against them for years.
