glad some cricket is being played. I'm really missing it. In my last games before I moved I felt I was getting somewhere. Wondering where I would be if I'd been practicing continually.
For technical practice, I simply varied the length so I was bowling reasonably flat and pitching on a good length, at the pace I was using at that moment. Generally in a practice session, I'd start off several metres in, and then come back as I felt my way into a faster action. I think when I...
An issue with a higher launch angle is that it requires an adjustment to the spinning action to land the ball on the seam, this is why I would do standing start practice from a shortened distance.
While you wait for the injury to heal I suggest getting a collection of balls, twenty plus, then bowl them to an empty net from a standing start. And repeat. And repeat. I would bet that you will find this valuable practice and likely discover new things. You can bowl to batsmen too from a...
I remember bowling a while ago in the nets to a confident sweeper. I was just bowling one pace off a shortened distance and he wasn't wearing pads. I thought, I'll throw in a flipper, that'll get him. I bowled it, came out nicely. He played to sweep it but it skidded through and hit him square...
Why not do both and see how you go?
While practicing legspin probably won't help pace bowling, I think practicing pace bowling is no bad thing for a spin bowler. It cannot be an accident that so many great spin bowlers came from a pace bowling background.
Baseball pitchers do not suffer from...
I am having a major life change, I've been offered a job in Costa Rica and am emigrating in a couple of weeks. Quite keen to keep up my legspin practice but don't know what it will be like over there. Haven't done any for months but I'd made massive progress last summer. It might be possible for...
I've just had a thought:
topspin -> superimpose flying saucer spin (anticlockwise as seen from above) = legspin
topspin -> superimpose flying saucer spin (clockwise as seen from above) = googly
This may or may not make any sense but it is how I visualise spinning a big legbreak. The topspin is...
I think I tried it once, but struggled to find value in it as I needed some more freedom to rotate. But looking again, I didn't have my legs set up as in that video so maybe that was upsetting things. I think one thing is that it is practicing off a short distance and the result looks pleasing...
Our team has started indoor winter nets but I am finding it hard to be motivated to go. Bowling 30 balls in a session just doesn't do it for me when I can go to the outdoor nets and bowl five times as many without a batsman in the way. Only reason to go would be to get feedback on progress and...
When I saw that video I also found that grip quite puzzling. If I was to place the ball in my hand like that, I can spin it comfortably, but it would be cross-seam. I can't conceive of spinning it from that position along the seam.
