3rd Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Kandy

The first two tests followed a similar path with Bangladesh being bowled out very cheaply, Sri Lanka amassing a big total and then Bangladesh being bowled out without making Sri Lanka bat again.

The last test went for only three days and in this series we haven't seen a good first innings effort from the visitors. If they want to be at least competitive, they can't afford to be bowled out for less than 100.

There will be a few changes for both sides. Chaminda Vaas heads back to England to continue his contract with county side Middlesex. Farveez Maharoof will come in to replace the veteran pace bowler. Also back into the side is Upul Tharanga who Sri Lanka captain Mehela Jayawardene drscribes as their "first choice opener". Either Michael Vandort or Malinda Warnapura faces the chop.

Bangladesh also have some changes of their own. Two changes are expected to take place with Tushar Imran replacing Mehrab Hossain and Syed Rasel coming into the side for Mohammad Sharif. Mohammad Ashraful, the Bangladesh captain explained that Mehrab was dropped after one test due to him being a specialist opener and not a middle order batsman.

Sri Lanka will be looking for a complete whitewash here while the Bangladesh side will be looking to show they can be competitive in test cricket. Let's hope it's a close contest.

Re: 3rd Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Kandy

Oooh, and there's a third change to the Sri Lankan side, Sujeeva de Silva replaces the rested Dilhara Fernando.

The pitch is expected to be more conducive for the pace bowlers with a covering of grass over the pitch and also some moisture from the overnight rain.

Conditions are expected to be fine throughout the day.

Re: 3rd Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Kandy

surprise surprise, Sri Lanka choose to field first!

good start for Bangladesh though

40/1 off 10 Overs.

Malinga trapping Javed Omar in front for 8.

how long can they last today?

Re: 3rd Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Kandy

...and at 48/1 after 12 Overs we have a rain delay!

to all Bangladesh fans out there your rain dance has obviously been working. How long can you keep it going for?

Re: 3rd Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Kandy

Not long enough at the moment, aussieman.

They sit at 4/72 at stumps on Day 1. Farveez Maharoof picked up Habibul Bashar for 18 with Muralitharan getting another two wickets.

Shahriar Nafees has been the best batsman so far for the Bangladeshis and was on 29 before falling to Muralitharan.

Only 29 overs bowled on the first day, leaving 61 overs thet weren't able to be bowled due to rain and also bad light at the end there.

Should fine up over the next few days so we should see some good cricket played. It will go a long way to deciding who will be the winner of this game.

Re: 3rd Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Kandy

Mohammad Ashraful just out to de Silva for 26.

That's de Silva's second wicket for the match so far. He picked up the other wicket to fall this morning, Tashar Imran.

At least Bangladesh were able to get into triple figures in the first innings this time. Statisitically, this is an improvement from the first two tests but in reality it isn't much better.

Mashrafe Mortaza is the batsman.

Re: 3rd Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Kandy

Bangladesh were bowled out for 131, their innings lasting just 48.5 overs.

No-one was able to score many runs after Ashraful departed and his 26 was not beaten by any of the lower order batsmen.

Muralitharan picked up some more cheap wickets and finished with figures of 6/28.

In reply, Sri Lanka are 0/13, their innings was hampered by a long rain delay.

Re: 3rd Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Kandy

Sri Lanka 0/30 at stumps. Rain and bad light bringing an end to the day's play.

Michael Vandort is not out on 25.

Re: 3rd Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Kandy

Bangladesh gave themselves some hope early on Day 3. Tharanga fell LBW to Syed Rasel for 12 and eight overs later, Rasel bowled Michael Vandort for 43.

Since then though, Sangakkara and Mehela Jayawardene have consolidated for the Sri Lankans and they now hold a lead on first innings. Sangakkara is 39 and Jayawardene is 47 not out and is showing a bit more aggression than his team-mate.

Sri Lanka are 2/148 and lead by 17 runs.

Re: 3rd Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Kandy

Another brilliant knock from Kumar Sangakkra sees Sri Lanka move into another solid position against Bangladesh.

Sangakkara blasted his way to 222 not out as Sri Lanka galloped to 4/500 at the end of day 3. Sangakkara was aided by Mehela Jaywardene who scored 165 before falling to Syed Rasel. Chamara Silva was then run-out on 25 by some good fielding by Mohammad Ashraful.

Rasel has tried pretty hard for the Bangladeshis and has 3/104.

A huge lead of 369 runs for the Sri Lankan side, there will most likely be an overnight declaration as the Lankans will be keen to finish this off as soon as possible.

Good fielding? Didn't he drop the catch and the ball ricocheted onto the stumps?

I thought he picked up the ball and threw the stumps down. I was going off what cricinfo said.

This is what i read off cricinfo:

Sri Lanka 385/3 KC Sangakkara 155* (217b 19x4) Syed Rasel 23.2-1-77-3

98.4 Mohammad Ashraful to Sangakkara, OUT, dropped but run out! Sangakkara comes down the track and smashes it in the air back at Ashraful who sticks his right hand out at it, he doesn't manage to hold on to the catch but manages to deflect it on to the stumps at the non-striker's end with Silva just short of his crease
LPC Silva run out 25 (51m 35b 3x4 0x6) SR: 71.42
Sri Lanka 445/4 KC Sangakkara 188* (251b 24x4) Mohammad Ashraful 7.4-0-39-0

Hey, still a pretty good effort although it was lucky. :p

Anyway, Bangladesh's second innings is well underway. They're 3/134 with two new batsmen at the crease. Just a short time ago, Muttiah Muralitharan dismissed Shahriar Nafees for a resistent 64. Murali has two wickets with Lasith Malinga the other scalp although he has been a bit expensive.

Bangladesh still trail by 235 runs and it is starting to drizzle again.

EDIT: Muralitharan traps Ashraful LBW for 19, 4/138 now.

Re: 3rd Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Kandy

4 wickets to go and Murali needs 3 to get to 700. It's getting tight for him to get it in his hometown.

Re: 3rd Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Kandy

Murali gets another. Mashrafe Mortaza caught in the deep by sub Malinda Warnapura.

7/166 now, this game will probably be over today.

Re: 3rd Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Kandy

Sharp catch by the Sri Lankan skipper sees the end of Tushar Imran. Malinga has two wickets in this innings now.

8/167, still trailing by 202 runs.

Re: 3rd Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Kandy

700 wickets good effort by Murali however it is pretty tainted against Bangladesh, would have been better if he got it v Australia
