Australia announce squad for Chappell-Hadlee series in New Zealand

Michael Hussey will lead Australia in the 3-match Chappell-Hadlee series to be held in New Zealand after the commencement of the Commonwealth Bank Series.

Hussey has lead Australia once before and scored 109 not out in a loss to West Indies in the DLF Cup last year. Michael Clarke has been named vice-captain.

Ricky Ponting has been given the tour off as a result of a sore back which he has had for a number of years. Adam Gilchrist was rested purely because of his heavy workload over the last few months and selectors decided he needed a rest and a chance to recharge before the World Cup. Brad Haddin will take his place.

In a surprise call-up, Western Australian young-gun Adam Voges will travel over to New Zealand as part of the 13-man squad. Voges was also in the 13-man squad for the 3rd Ashes test in Perth.

Squad

Michael Hussey*, Matthew Hayden, Shane Watson, Michael Clarke, Brad Hodge, Adam Voges, Brad Haddin+, Cameron White, Brad Hogg, Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Bracken, Glenn McGrath.

Michael Clarke vice-captain? That's interesting. Was this expected?

It doesn't surprise me all that much. The selectors have a policy of resting key players for games that aren't a priority and this series represented a chance for Ponting and Gilchrist to rest up as they have had a very heavy workload over the past few months.

Hussey was the logical choice for captain and has captained Australia before. Clarke has been touted as the future captain of Australia so this is his chance to step up to the plate and have a leadership role within the side.

I never saw him as a bit of a leader on the field, i dunno I just couldn't recognise his leadership qualities that are suppose to show.

But I am guessing Cricket Australia are just giving him experience and grooming him for the future leadership role.

hes always having little chats to ponting about things on the field, and u can tell ponting rates him highly aswell. mark and steve waugh have both said he has one of the best cricket brains they have ever seen

Ponting is out injured and Gillchrist is out resting. No surprises there.

Injured?? Ponting's resting his back. If he was "injured" he wouldnt be playing today.

Are the Australian selectors pre-empting an injury for him....

He is injured SS. He has been carrying that back problem since the test matches. You probably wouldn't know that Ponting has to take painkillers before he goes out to play. That is the case.

Apparently the Australian captaincy and vice-captaincy is a dangerous occupation. Not only are Ponting and Gilchrist out of this series, but Clarke is apparently hurt too. Better keep your fingers crossed about Hussey.

Jaques was called in as cover for Clarke.
