Australia in South Africa

Good squad.......

Australia squad: Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Clarke, Phillip Hughes, Simon Katich, Michael Hussey, Andrew McDonald, Brad Haddin (wk), Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle, Doug Bollinger, Bryce McGain, Ben Hilfenhaus, Nathan Hauritz, Marcus North.

Prodigious young NSW opening batsman Phillip Hughes has been annointed as Matthew Hayden's successor at the top of Australia's batting order after being selected in theTest squad for the tour of South Africa this month.

Hughes, 20, has scored 891 runs at 74.25 this season and is set to make his Test debut on February 26 in Johannesburg with selectors choosing just two specialist openers.

Victorian legspinner Bryce McGain, 36, will also press to make his Test debut having recovered from a shoulder injury that ruled him out of Australia's tour of India in October.

The other surprise selection is Western Australia's batting all-rounder Marcus North who is likely to fight Victoria's Andrew McDonald for the No.6 position vacated by Andrew Symonds.

Re: Australia in South Africa

Pretty happy with that squad. Finally North has been selected, albeit as the reserve batsmen, having said that I would play him ahead of McDonald.

Good to see Hughes named in the squad. Hopefully he makes his Australian debut sooner rather that later.

I think he will as he is the only other opener in the side bar Katich.

I think this squad will still prove quite vulnerable though. We saw South africa playing Johnson and the like with ease in the odis and Hughes is only 20 this is a very brave decision one that I think should have been delayed so he could get his technique 100% correct. I also think that Mcdonal and Haddin will not provide a solid lower order, which will place alot of pressure on Ponting, Clarke and Hussey.

I guess we will have to wait and see though.

I like your XI. 4 debutantes might be a problem, but is the way to go.

Re: Australia in South Africa

Happy with the squad and I think Tristo's XI is the way to go.

Finally, North in the test squad:D:D:D

Re: Australia in South Africa

Congratulations Hughes. Wish they picked him for the series that just passed. Very long and hard tour coming up...

Re: Australia in South Africa

I think Johnson could almost be named as the all-rounder,though i do like the selection of North.Johnson's technique is superb for a lower order batsmen.

Re: Australia in South Africa

I like the inclusion of North as it gives we don't need McDonald's bowling as we have Clarke and Katich to bowl part-time accompanying the 4 lead bowlers.

I really don't want to play Hilfenhaus or Bollinger. Is there another quick on the domestic scene who has the ability to play at the highest level?

I don't believe Hilfenhaus is there yet, and Bollinger did nothing to impress me in his debut test.

Re: Australia in South Africa

South Africa have left out Prince from the first 2 tests.

Has now fully recovered but cannot get back into the team.

South Africa Test squad:
Graeme Smith (capt), Hashim Amla, Mark Boucher (wk), AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Paul Harris, Jacques Kallis, Neil McKenzie, Morne Morkel, Makhaya Ntini, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
