Footscray Cricket Association

Hi Guys, just wondering if anyone here used to play in the old FCA. Unfortunately the comp died many years ago but in its prime there were some sensational players running around.

Re: Footscray Cricket Association

The old FCA. Folded in the mid 1990's and most of the teams went into the Sunshine assocation who then folded a few years later and the remaining teams went in to the Williamstown assocation

Some great clubs played in the FCA - ANA, Bucks, Balmoral, Maribyrnong, Laurel, VUT, Tottenham, West Rec (I think that what they were called).

Rumour at the time it folded was thet the FCA was cashed up and heaps in the Bank..

Re: Footscray Cricket Association

Did you play OB, I myself played at Bucks who were probably the Collingwood of the association, either loved or hated.

Re: Footscray Cricket Association

The best thing about Bucks was their home ground.

Fine leg on one ground is standing at 2nd slip on another!!  :p

I remember playing there, when there was five wickets in play. These days, only two wickets are used on a Saturday, with ANA & Kingsville Baptist using them, while a 3rd wicket used on Sundays by the Churches comp. Next year apparently the council are going to move both ANA'S and Kingsville wickets in the middle of the ground, only having the two wickets in play. Just as well l guess, though must admitt just isnt the same atmosphere as years gone by.

There were other strong teams playing in the FCA in the 80s at one stage, Yarraville Club, Footscray United, Wembley, Footscray City, RAAF, and three new commers in the last coulple of seasons in the FCA, Melton South, Bellbridge & Thorobreds.

Sad to say quite a few of the old clubs have folded since the FCA went under: Bucks, Maribyrnong, Laurel ,V.U.T/Tottenham which merged and folded couple of years later, Footscray City and West Rec/West Footscray.

Out of the Founding members of the FCA, l beleive only Yarraville Club & Footscray ANA have survived to date.

Re: Footscray Cricket Association

Just letting all those past FCA players know, that there is a big 75th reunion being organised for the FCA. We are attempting to have a combined team of past FCA players play a game against past Footscray ANA players as its also their 75th Reunion. Its anticpated that this reunion will be in middle of March at Angliss Reserve in Yarraville. I will post the date when it becomes Available. There will be adds place in various local news papers in the comming weeks.

A great day was held, heaps of stories told and lots of green cans drunk. ANA piped FCA by a couple of runs. Len Balcam still showed bit of fire for the FCA team, and old timer Len Hunter for ANA showed he still had it in him at 70!, truely amazing, runup and all..... Players/spectators for the FCA, represented former FCA teams: Tottenham,Yarraville club, Footscray City, BUCKS, Laurel, VUT, Footscray United,West Footscray & Footscray ANA.

Re: Footscray Cricket Association

Which teams were the hardest to beat?

Always thought BUCKS were very strong in the 90's, much like the Collingwood of the FCA, played hard but always good for a drink after the game.

How did BUCKS fold, They had a number of teams somethink like 5 in total with 2 teams in B Turf at one stage, I been told they had a lots and lots of dollars but yet there players were not paid (mind you they were poach from other clubs). Been suggested to me that someone ran away with all the money..

The year before they folded they had five teams, apparently they had the players but no one willing to do the administration. I beleive their money is still in trust, no idea of how much. I know at one stage they had alot of dollars in the bank, as l knew one of there past treasures. I even think they owned their club rooms outright. Ive heard the roumours too that people stole money, not sure if its true though. Its a sad trend to see these local club folds, theres up to half a dozen opposition clubs ive played against over the years that no longer exist today.

Re: Footscray Cricket Association

Had a look at the FCA Honour board last night and found that 4 of the past A Turf Preimers of the FCA in the 1990's have folded over the years:

FCA A Turf Preimers

1990/1991 WRFL (West Footscray)
1991/1992 BUCKS
1992/1993 Yarraville Club
1993/1994 Tottenham
1994/1995 Maryibnong
1995/1996 BUCKS
1996/1997 BUCKS

FCA folded after the 1996/1997 Season

Re: Footscray Cricket Association

Another interesting find , yarraville club won a hatrick of premierships in the late 80s.

Re: Footscray Cricket Association

Hated playing those bastards from Bucks, Grant Jones was a good bat, and they had a good slowie Scott Gilham but most of the rest were just tossers. What about some other FCA legends like John Bjorjenak, Larry Simmons, Vid Richardson, John Sharp, Terry Cahill, Wayne Connor, Lucky Aripides Gary and Steven Barrow. Some quality players running round years back. Cant ever remember any good players at Balmoral, they were a disgrace.

Out of all those players only got a chance to play against Burrows, he was a good player, l beleive played district too. Always had a good rivalry against BUCKS, and all their games were a tough battle. Their first were kings of intimidation. I still remember the famous post Grand Final punch up in the mid 90's when they won the A Turf Primership, and we won the B Turf. Lasted about 5 minutes in between BUCKS and ANA'S rooms, couple of good whacks were landed and in the end most of our guys ended up drinking with them in BUCKS room, figure that one out! Must say their rooms were always buzzing with people, a shame they folded...
