McCullum signs on for New South Wales

Re: McCullum signs on for New South Wales

He seems like a top bloke though! ;)

Brendon McCullum says he feels honoured and privileged to get the opportunity to play for NSW in Saturday's Twenty-20 final clash against Victoria at ANZ Stadium.

The 27-year-old New Zealand international will become the first overseas player to play for the Blues since former Pakistan captain Imran Khan in 1984 and he said his move had been met with approval across the Tasman.

"Any time a New Zealander gets the chance to play in Australia is held in high regard at home and it is a great honour for me to be here," he said.

"I'm really looking forward to the challenge and it can only be good for the game of cricket when players from around the world get to play together."

McCullum also said he will be donating his match fee for the game to his province's Otago Cricket Association.

McCullum happy to join NSW Twenty20 team

And Roebuck responds to all you bitters out there! ;)

McCullum is playing for NSW in the last Twenty20 contest of the campaign at ANZ Stadium tomorrow night. The timing is significant. It's a tangled web, so take a deep breath before continuing. Winning is not important. Both finalists, Victoria and NSW, have already qualified for the lucrative Champions League showdown due to be staged in India later this year. Several NSW players have signed for Indian outfits and might be obliged to stick by them in those finals. Nathan Bracken, Brett Lee, Simon Katich, Dominic Thornely, David Warner and Moises Henriques face this predicament. In showbiz it's possible to serve several masters. It's also possible to bathe in milk.

Fearful of sending a weakened team to the finals, thereby reducing their chances of making a motza, NSW have offered terms to the swashbuckling Kiwi. Nor could any time be wasted. Only blokes appearing in domestic qualifiers can represent that team in the later stages. Of course, he might be cup-tied, as he also turns out for the Kolkata Whatevertheyarecalleds. Presumably, NSW officials think a 20-overs team led by a retired veteran is unlikely to progress. Sourav Ganguly has been underestimated before.

By signing McCullum the Blues have improved their chance of pocketing the money in India. Bear in mind other teams will feature various imported high flyers, including Australians from all six states. Everyone is chasing the lolly, in sport and elsewhere.

A lot of money is at stake. Might as well give yourself a fair crack at winning it.

That's all good and well, but McCullum shouldn't have been signed until after the final. I'm all for him playing in the Champions League. If he is on the list from start to finish, that's fine. But I'm really not a fan of him blowing in for the final. It just doesn't feel like the same team. It feels like a bastardised version of the Blues. I know that's melodramatic, but I'm just not a fan.

Did you even read the article? He had to play in the final otherwise he would not be able to play with us in India- which is why we signed him up!

We didn't sign him up to improve our chances at winning a final as we've already qualified for India, it was looking ahead to the future. The fact that he might help us win the final is just an added bonus! ;)

One thing is for sure it will be funny to see the Victorians have a cry if they lose.

That's the best part! :D

Re: McCullum signs on for New South Wales

All this crap just shows an ignorance of the rules by the NSW media

If they lose a player to the IPL side who qualifies (And at most its 1-2 who havent even got them here, not really losing out at all) then they can replace them with ANYONE they want

So they crap on about getting depth, but they could still sign McCullum before the tournament if they actually lost any players

It just show that NSW is desperate to not lose another final to the Vics, its got nothing to do with India

Funny thing is a NZ side might be welcomed into the tournament so NSW would be 3rd in line :p

I missed that. That's what skim-reading does.

Still not a fan of the whole situation, but it does make it a little bit more understandable.

Re: McCullum signs on for New South Wales

My only problem with it is, they would have had to drop someone for Brendan McCullum, someone who probably helped get them to the final.
