New Zealand in Australia

Re: New Zealand in Australia

First Test - Australia vs New Zealand at the Woolloongabba, Brisbane

The start of the Australian summer is upon us and it can’t come quick enough for the Aussies who struggled in their 2-0 loss to India on the sub-continent. Their bowlers will be happy to be back on home soil with the Gabba pitch in Brisbane expected to seam and swing nicely marking a big change from the flat pitches experience in India.

Australia will be hoping to do well here and it is almost expected of them after a disappointing tour of India which brought up more questions then answers. A number of batsmen will come under the pump, not to mention the underperforming bowling attack who found it hard to take wickets in India.

For New Zealand, the tour represents a chance to bond with Daniel Vettori leading a very inexperienced outfit. The Kiwis did reasonably well against Bangladesh after a couple of scares but they were well beaten by England back in the middle of the year. Despite being in the middle of the order rankings wise, these two sides always seem to be evenly matched with each series played between the two going close regardless of who’s in form and who isn’t.

For Australia, Andrew Symonds is back in the line-up after his imposed exile. Despite taking 12 wickets and Man-of-the-Match honours on debut, Jason Krejza will probably carry the drinks with the Brisbane pitch going to heavily favour the seamers. That will mean Stuart Clark returns to the side after being dropped for the Nagpur test. Cameron White has also been axed after a poor showing in India.

Chris Martin is back for the Kiwis after missing the Bangladesh tour with injury whilst Tim Southee is relegated to 12th man duties. Grant Elliott takes the all-rounder role with the dangerous Jacob Oram missing through injury. Expect Gareth Hopkins to play if Brendon McCullum doesn’t recover in time from back and foot complaints.

Expect a pretty good contest in this one. New Zealand haven’t been great in recent times but I reckon they’ll give Australia a run for their money here as the Aussies look to recover after their tour from India. Australia will be looking to silence a few critics and what better way than to beat their Trans-Tasman rivals.

Re: New Zealand in Australia

NZ won the toss and elected to bat on a greenish wicket and cloudy conditions.

Will be a tough first day's play for the aussies without a doubt.

Re: New Zealand in Australia

Haddin has a brain-melt just before tea and Australia are now 7 for 152.

Ronchi would have smashed that fat dude for 6, lol.

Re: New Zealand in Australia

haddin and watson both fail AGAIN..... haddin must be close to getting the axe.....

they are really struggling to get back into the groove of high bouncing and seaming wickets

still can't wait to see the aussies on this deck later on

btw well done to clarke so far, gutsy innings....

how hussey could be given out for that, you could see the leg stump!!!

Re: New Zealand in Australia

Australia probably already have enough runs to get a 1st innings lead going on most state matches at the GABBA and this wicket is like one of those

Re: New Zealand in Australia

I have bet 500cash on Australia but looking at the current situation i think i might lose the cash ...

There is a bit in the pitch ATM though, 214 may be about par and the kiwis batting line up is suspect.

Re: New Zealand in Australia

And they take the bad light without loss, great effort today by NZ. Should be an interesting day's play tomorrow.

Re: New Zealand in Australia

I'm picking Ryder and How to turn this into a great series, while Taylor and Flynn alternate decent innings. And Vettori can pull a Harbajhan and get 50 versus Australia every time... slightly biased opinion, but hey. It's like they're playing on Kelburn Park in Wellington it's so green - home conditions, bar the humidity.

The reason NZ don't stand a chance is that when the pitch isn't helping in the next match Australia will put on 600.

Re: New Zealand in Australia

Predicted this would happen. Everyone's rubbished New Zealand but they've come out and produced the goods. Australia's batting line-up is still being carried by too few people. Clarke and Hussey are still scoring the bulk of the runs and then there was Symonds' contribution but the rest have looked ordinary. Hayden's place is looking increasingly uncertain with each innings he plays, Ponting isn't looking too flash, Watson and Katich both failed and Haddin hasn't made runs for quite a while.

Everyone's underestimated New Zealand coming into this and they've come out and convincingly beaten Australia on day one.

Some great bowling by young Southee, he's going to be the future of New Zealand cricket. All the bowlers did well really although you'd expect them to with the pitch in the condition it's in.

Day 2 will be a good one.

Re: New Zealand in Australia

Kiwis certainly have a bit to work with there young bowlers and it was a brave but correct decision by Vettori to bowl first but on that deck , but bowling Australia out for anything more then they did would have been a fail given the conditions .

Its amazing how the simple art of letting the ball go on a seaming deck seems to have gone out of the game , or the Aussies game at least . They simple played too much early and good channel bowling by the Kiwis forced them into indecision . Will be interesting to see how the Kiwis bat .....

Gabba traditionally is harder to bat on day 2 so we will get a better idea of things come stumps today .

Re: New Zealand in Australia

Hats off to New Zealand for their performance so far with such a young side.

Taylor has to be one of the most naturally gifted players going around. Very underrated.

Re: New Zealand in Australia

Interesting contest with New Zealand 5 for 125.

Taylor getting trapped LBW for 40 was a big blow as he was scoring and they now have two grafters at the crease.

Re: New Zealand in Australia

Vettori gone now and NZ are 7 for 143, Australia should have a bit of a lead if they clean up the tail quickly.

Edit - another one, Southe for a duck and a nice catch from Symonds.

Re: New Zealand in Australia

In a bit of poo the Aussies.

Hayden First ball duck

Ponting 17 Awful, awful shot.

Husey Duck ball clipped pad, Rudi gave it out.

Katich and Clarke have it all to do.

Still 3 days left in this match

46/3 a lead of 105

Re: New Zealand in Australia

4 for 84 isn't good but I reckon if Australia can scratch out a lead of 250+ we should be right..

Up to NZ now to take a couple more and break the game right open.
