Twenty20 World cup - What went wrong?

What wen't wrong in the T20 World cup?

For mine we didn't play a specialist team.

1. Ponting is on the decline and can't play T20 cricket. Nearly should retire from ODI's.

2. Hayden and Gilchrist should have played, on IPL form any way.

3. Symonds is an alcoholic who has lost the desire to play international cricket. Let us down.

4. No Phill Hughes.

5. Mike Hussey is not a T20 player and is past it.

6. Brett lee, is past it, lacks the special skills and doesn't bowl tight.

What else?

its hard to argue with you on most points, i know gilly didnt make himself available for selection, hayden probably would have if asked, you could put warne in the mix as well, i think what really went wrong was our desire and symonds getting sent home wouldnt have helped morale, i dont think we"ve enbraced T/20 as a country either, im a purist and really only like test match cricket and the ODI world cup so T/20 does nothing for me and it seems im not alone there, i reckon the rest of the world got sick of getting hammered by us and decided to make a new game that they would be more competitive in lol. but seriously, we are a long way behind most countrys in that form of the game.

Dumb selections cost them, alot mention Mike Hussey but he is just out of form, he has one of the best records of all Aussie batsmen, only his brother and Hodgey are better

Hodge, Warner, Dussey, White, Mussey, Carseldine, Haddin, Johnson, Bracken, Hauritz, R.Harris

D.Harris, G.Bailey, really struggling for bowlers

The leading T20 wicket takers for Australia are in order
Nannes, Harvey, Warne, Hodge, Bracken

drop the whole side, then start again looking at the domestic big bash.

when ODIs were introduced thats what happened to a large extent, the test side wasnt automatically shoved in to play them, so start again.
extend the big bash a little so its not only a few games, then take the 11 best performers out of the that and create a side. they could also take into account the current players international record, people like hussey and bracken (and so on) who have proved their worth would have a little more leeway. players like clarke who dont have a very good record would have to work in the big bash (which is hopefully played at a time when the international players could join in) to make the spot.
i myself dont care what happens in T20 cricket, but if the aussies are to be successful they have to select a great T20 side, not a great ODI side.

i would love to have hayden and gilchrist back (especially just to annoy those late hayden career sceptics) to pummel attacks worldwide, but i dont think the selectors should even look at IPL form, that isnt playing for your state or country and should therefore not be included. the big bash has to be taken more seriously if the team is going to improve, its not as if the SS players have some indian test tournament to run away to.

Pick a team for the format FFS.

Always play a specialist spinner, perhaps 2. Did we not learn from 2007 by not playing Hogg? Heal or Krezja should've been over there instead of the pie chucker Lee.

Re: Twenty20 World cup - What went wrong?

Who cares? Honestly, it's Twenty20, easily the worst format in cricket.

I'm not going to go into details, but I haven't watched a game in the IPL or Twenty20 World Cup, and I'm proud to say it.

but we used to say the same with ODIs until Steve Waugh came along and made it a priority to be best at 50 overs and Test Cricket. somebody in the future will make it a priority to be best at 20over, 50 over and test cricket.

i don't know that it was so much a call to select a specialist side as it is just another sign post on the way down for Australian cricket. the teams that dominated world cricket in both forms from the early 90's through to the early 2000's relied on a small core of players. it won't be until we amass another small core of reliable and capable players that we will dominate again. experience in the new game will mean that these players will dominate all three forms.

Re: Twenty20 World cup - What went wrong?

i dont like T20s now, but i didnt really like the idea of the 50 over game to begin with either. i know love tests and ODIs almost equally. just remember that when ODIs first began australia was shocking at them to start with. give it some time for the selectors and players to work stuff out and i believe the aussies will come to some sort of a dominance in this form as well.

Re: Twenty20 World cup - What went wrong?

It's not that we are bad at them. NSW, my state side, won the Twenty20 comp in the Australia 2008/09 domestic season. I don't really care all that much TBH. Twenty20 has never been my go, I'm young but more mature then most in this regard.

Re: Twenty20 World cup - What went wrong?

yeah thats what i meant, im the same way, would much prefer to watch 100s of overs of a test the 50 overs of an ODI even if it is slow. T20 isnt cricket because one over can change the game, rather then having to have the skill to string hours of good batting or bowling together to win a game. that is why minnows of the game can win more readily because it only takes one mistake for a side to lose a game (which isnt in the spirit of cricket) like australia completely misjudging chris gayle.
but, like what happened with 50 over cricket, once your country gets good at it it rises in popularity. after the T20 WC 09 the popularity in australia plummeted. if australia where to go out and thrash everyone i would watch it just for laughs. eventually i would consider it important to win and back the team more and more. as much as id like to say that wasnt true, it probably would happen. im not going to ignore cricketers going well.
