I heard he may end up at Richmond to replace Adam Crosthwaite.

Other tiger news no decision has been made yet on whether Richmond will play their home games at Punt Road Oval or Victoria Park this season.

Premier Cricket Fixture 2009/10 is out

The Premier Clubs last night voted to retain 15 rounds, thereby rejecting a proposal to include Twenty20 matches as part of the season's program. As a result, Premier Cricket's Twenty20 series will remain a stand-alone competition. A separate proposal to reduce the hours of play in 1sts and 2nds Two-Day matches was also rejected.

At the Cricket Victoria Delegates' meeting, the Premier Clubs voted 11/7 in favour of retaining basically the same format as 2008-09, comprising 15 rounds, with 8 two-dayers and 7 one-dayers. The Clubs voted 10/8 in favour of retaining the 100-overs per day, 11am - 6pm, with three two-hour sessions for 1sts and 2nds two-day matches. The Pennant Committee had put forward a 90-overs per day, 12 noon - 6pm proposal.

The Premier fixtures for 2009-10, released after the meeting, are listed below. With 18 Clubs and only 15 rounds, each club misses out on playing two other clubs during the season. This season the program has been structured to ensure that clubs play both of the teams they missed out on playing in 2008-09. Also, as much as possible, where a club played another club last season in a two-dayer, they will be drawn to play them in a one-dayer in 2009-10.

Fixtures for the stand-alone Twenty20 competition will be confirmed in the next few weeks.

Cash loss hits Hawthorn-Monash University

HAWTHORN-Monash University Cricket Club is under investigation by Cricket Victoria following an operating loss of about $140,000 for the 2008-09 season.
However, the Hawks' new management team, headed by president Petar Ivetic, has the backing of CV and Monash University and is confident it will restore the club to its former glory.

Last month, an audit revealed the club had an operating loss of about $140,000 for the 2008-09 financial year.

Money was spent on flag poles ($10,000), coaching staff ($27,000), professional players ($33,000) and annual reports ($9800).

CV executive officer Tony Dodemaide said the audit revealed a "horrendous" loss.

"There are certain conditions CV imposes for the financial health of a club and on that basis we are working with the club to gain an understanding of how it got itself in that position."

He said a CV pennant committee was investigating the liquidity and financial health of the club and professional player arrangements.

The investigation, which should be completed within a week, had not revealed any breaches that had to be reported to police, he said.

Mr Dodemaide said he didn't think the club would be closed down.

"We're finalising the terms including the repayment of [a $44,000] grant. We're very conscious of the new administration and in principle we support them and are looking to help. They have been very open and co-operative."

The club has secured at least five revenue streams for the 2009-10 season including sponsorship from Bendigo Bank's Glen Waverley branch and Pinewood Community Bank, cricket balls from Platypus, and apparel from AGS Sports.

Revenue will also come from CV dividends, Monash University grants and social members.

The club has implemented processes to protect it against financial mismanagement, including that any expense of more than $1000 required committee approval.

While the Hawks lost seven players last season, a number have returned since the new committee was voted in last month. They include Matthew Hewat and Dale Christie, who have rejoined as assistant coaches.

The Journal also believes the club is negotiating an affiliation with the Hawthorn Football Club that

would allow the cricketers to use the football club emblem during Twenty20 and one-day matches.

Ivetic acknowledged the committee would have its challenges on and off the field as the Hawks battled a "distressed financial situation".

Ivetic said that while the club was in financial difficulty, the level of optimism among the players and the supporters meant one of Victoria's oldest cricket clubs would have the chance to prove it was worth keeping alive.

He said CV and Monash University had been supportive and provided guidance and direction to help turn the club's situation around.

"Words cannot describe how excited we are by the potential here."

Monash Sport director Martin Doulton felt "very positive" about the club's future.

He said the university had been working closely with the new committee, which had met all the conditions of reaffiliation.

"They are certainly trying hard to build the club's reputation back up."

Ryan Carters will be playing with Richmond this season.

Richmond will almost certainly remain at Punt Road Oval after their application to play at Victoria Park was rejected by the local council.

On top of the pain of a record operating loss announced at their 2009 AGM, the Hawthorn-Monash University Cricket Club (HMUCC) has been hit with severe sanctions for breaching Cricket Victoria (CV) rules last season. They are the most extreme penalties imposed on any club since the introduction of professional player rules in the early 1980s.

Sanctions include fines totalling $12,500, the loss of premiership and Club Championship points for last season, suspensions on individual players and restrictions on the appointment of any professional players for the next three seasons.

The sanctions conclude a tumultuous year for the Hawks. As well as financial woes, relationships with the University and other CV Member Clubs were severely strained and a number of players defected towards the end of the season.

Following a post-season upheaval, including the defeat of a proposal to move away from the University and the subsequent resignation of then President Glenn Jones, an interim administration of the Club approached CV in May and early June to advise of a parlous financial position. Upon full investigation, a disastrous loss of $138,541 was reported to members for the 2008-09 season, the most significant club loss ever recorded. HMUCC sought the support of CV and Monash University in an effort to continue and trade its way out of its predicament and undertook to produce a report detailing its circumstances with the help of the Club Auditor.

The report cited several contributing reasons for the Club's malaise, including poor accounting processes and financial reporting procedures, inappropriate expenditure decisions and examples of poor governance practices. Further, the report indicated that there may have been some irregularities regarding professional player rules during the 2008-09 season. Each Premier Club is permitted to have two 1st XI professional players per season, with HMUCC registering English players Chris Benham and Roger Sillence in 2008/09.

The CV Pennant Committee (PC) immediately launched an investigation into the professional player matter and this enquiry was concluded last week. The PC found that HMUCC had indeed breached CV rules and, between the Board and PC, the following penalties were imposed:

• A Board-imposed fine of $2,500 for Criteria Assessment breaches relating to financial liquidity and breaches to policy relating to a capital grant extended to the Club in 2007.
• A fine of $10,000 ($5,000 of this fine is to be suspended until the end of the 2011/12 season) for breach of professional player rules.
• HMUCC stripped of all 1st XI match points and 1st XI Club Championship points earned in 2008/09. These match points and Club Championship points will not be reallocated to opposition teams. The PC believes that, whilst the penalty was purely academic, should the offence have occurred during the season, a penalty of this nature and magnitude would have applied and it is vital that all Premier Clubs are aware of this.
• HMUCC will not be permitted to appoint any professional 1st XI players for at least three seasons (2009/10, 2010/11 & 2011/12).
Individual player penalties imposed were:

SIMON DART
Guilty of breaching his amateur status in 2008-09 and suspended for two matches.

LUKAS HOOGENBOOM
Guilty of breaching his amateur status and reprimanded.

STEVEN SPOLJARIC
Guilty of breaching his amateur status in 2008/09 and suspended until 1 December 2009 (deemed to be the equivalent of eight matches).

Commenting on the penalties, CV CEO Tony Dodemaide said “These are indeed heavy sanctions and an important message to other Clubs with respect to proper governance and financial management practices.

“We recognise that the newly-elected administration has been open and transparent in cooperating with the investigation and is genuine in its desire to revive the Club and rebuild its reputation with Monash University, Victorian cricket and the wider community. This was taken into account in reaching the decisions.

“CV and its members are mindful of the great history, tradition, heritage and evolution of the Club stretching over 150 years and have worked actively with the Club and its supporters in an effort to help it recover from the regrettable events of the last couple of years. It has produced great names such as Frank Laver, Peter McAlister, Ray Steele, Ben Barnett, Bob Cowper, Ian Law, John Chambers and Peter Roach and has won nine premierships, the most recent in 1998-99.

“We hope that it can continue that proud tradition well into the future with the valuable support of a great institution like Monash University.”

He added “It is indeed sad and alarming that the Club could end up in this position, and we wish new Club President Petar Ivetic and his committee well in their endeavours from here. They have certainly taken up the challenge with gusto so far. We understand new players and sponsors are being attracted, so the outlook is positive.

“Under CV's current rules and regulations, sanctions for breaches of the Premier Match Rules are limited to players and Clubs. In an effort to further discourage a repeat of the events at HMUCC, the Board and Members of CV are looking at extending the reach of its rules to allow sanctions to also be levied in future against any officials or administrators found to have knowingly breached or participated in breaches of the Premier Match Rules. We will also look at new ways to provide earlier warning signals of potential problems at Clubs, and avenues to step in accordingly.”

HMUCC and CV have each signed-off an agreement which ensures that the Club fulfils various obligations including payment of fines and other funds to be recovered.

hey guys i am on here trying to recruit a quality, proven cricketer down to Geelong for a game of cricket and also securing a quality job managing a sports store down here. I am fro0m the Grovedale Cricket Club in div 1. We ve won and lost 2 flags in the last 6 years. Experience is nt a big factor for the job as there will be training but it would be handy. Pleaes get back to me asap if anyones keen or know of anyone

It was as plain as day that cricketers the status of Dart and Spoljaric were not just playing for the love of the game and the club - why it could take all year for CV to investigate this is beyond me.

What an absolute joke, this club is a disgrace. The rules are there for everyone to abide by and they have shown blatant disregard for them.

A couple of years of pain and suffering at the minimum, here's to a year at the bottom of the ladder for this disgraceful conduct.

Hawthorn have moved on mate. The President, committee, coach, Dart, Spoljaric, Sillence and Benham have all gone elsewhere. They'll struggle this year for sure but from what I hear it's basically a brand new club.

and a new scoreboard? last time i was there the el presidente` said it cost them $100 k and the thing barely worked and they wanted a refund!

and why did they wanna move from monash. 1st they took over/mergered with monash uni, and then killed off their subbies team and then leave. i think its a good ground and set up they have going! except the change rooms, who wants to walk up concrete stairs after your out!
