who will go down as as most value to the Australian team, healy or gilchrist ?, healy was the better keeper but gilchrist was capable with the gloves and a much better batsman so ill go for gilchrist everyday of the week, and if devilliers was capable id get rid of boucher for sure, only if he was capable though.

As AB said, he's a great fielder, and getting close to one of the best bats in the world, I wouldnt risk him by making him keep. Wouldnt want to burn him out.

why not risk him, if it starts affecting his batting or he starts costing the team with bad keeping you can allways abort the exercise, no harm done. remember gilly gave us a massive advantage over the rest of the world with his batting.

DeVilliers is not Gilchrist. There are few if any specialist batsmen who keep as well as Gilchrist did, and while he wasn't the greatest ever his abilities are severely underrated. We don't know how lucky we were.

I think keeping is underrated as a skill. At typically 3-4 each, the leg byes quickly add up if you don't have a dynamic player behind the stumps - and that's worth a fair few off the bat.

do you know how good devilliers is with the gloves ? i dont, but if he"s a natural athlete and who knows, he may be a very good keeper.

Re: Who would be favoured to be Australia's no.2 keeper now?

i think that a keeper should be selected based on their keeping skills alone, then consider their batting later. a keeper has the potential to field every single ball of the innings, and if they screw up then your whole team will fail. batting should be thought of as an extra, and if it cant be decided between two, then that comes into account. gilly was different, just a one off, and we were damn lucky to have had him, but i think healy better filled in the roll of the keeper. gilly got so many dismissals because he had an excellent line up of bowlers bowling to him for his whole career, but he did have to be good enough to take them all. healy in my opinion was of greater value, gilly shouldnt have been needed if the top order did their job, thats what they are there for and if they fail then its up to the tail to wag, good luck to them. as was said keeping is a much underrated skill, not everyone can keep. it was a miracle that gilly's body lasted as long as it did, having to keep and bat in all forms of the game

Re: Who would be favoured to be Australia's no.2 keeper now?

the guy has great hands in the slips, so he wont drop many with the gloves on, from the quick bowlers anyway, keeping to spinners is another matter but they do only have finger spinners in their team, people in SA including ashwell prince seem to think hes a very capable keeper or else they wouldnt be pushing it. i bet he"s better than alec stuart, and he did it for a number of years, hes batting did suffer though, but hes a much better batsman than he was, i think if he carries himself well with the gloves in the T/20 WC then they would be stupid not to atleast try him in the longer forms of the game, if he doesnt want the job, Tough, its a team sport and the team comes before anyones needs or ambitions. IMO, i know he wants to work on being the worlds best batsman, but hey, so do i, can you imagine playing footy and your coach puts you at fullback, and you say no coach, i dont think so, i want to be the leading goal kicker, what do you think he"ll say.

So let him go back and play keeper for Transvaal and prove himself, like any other player. I don't care how gifted an athlete he is, you don't make a non-keeper the Test custodian.

Re: Who would be favoured to be Australia's no.2 keeper now?

Isn't he already a wicketkeeper? If not I agree with Caesar.

Re: Who would be favoured to be Australia's no.2 keeper now?

Heino Kuhn (sp?) is the Titans' keeper, AFAIK AB is only part-time.

My preference would be for any Test keeper to be keeping at a FC level too.

Re: Who would be favoured to be Australia's no.2 keeper now?

I agree. If AB isn't a full time keeper then forget about it.

Re: Who would be favoured to be Australia's no.2 keeper now?

well its obvious now that manou is the selector's second pick keeper, with pain being the next in line with him playing for australia.

not sure if its the right way round, but i doubt haddin will have much trouble staying where he is.
