Is that official SS? Agree with bigmerv. Weather has been good enough for long enough to get one up. Fair enough if it throws it down Friday and Saturday, but we should at least give ourselves every chance

It would appear that councils that use outside contractors to prepare wickets and top dress grounds have been slow to get it done and ready to hand over to the clubs in sufficient time prior to the first saturday in October. It appears their co-ordination methods are pretty poor. Obviously the window from Sept 1st to 30th is the best time to prepare grounds for both codes. Council officers are pretty well versed in spin when it comes to explaining why grounds that finished their football at the end of august still haven't been top dressed or wickets prepared. Seems to be a perannual problem. Missing the first Sat in october is happening far too often. Never used to be the case in the seventies and eighties.Councils are the main problem, we give grounds to footy in good nick, but when we get them back we have to wait 4 to 5 weeks
No we didn't. Saturday, October 1st, was the AFL Grand final & there was no cricket. We played last year in the first week but very rare

The last time there was play on the first Saturday in October was in 2006-07, the only time this century.
My question was "when did VTCA last play on the first Saturday in October". It wasn't last year because there was no play on !st October & round 1 commenced on 8th October.Well I just looked on the vtca website first round 1 dayer sat October 8th all games in the south completed... So last year we did play the first round... This sat is the 6th so only 2 days difference
Tend to agree with this. We have had 1mm of rain and plenty of sunshine in the last two weeks. If we can't get a deck ready to go with those conditions then we may as well concede defeat and admit that we will never play this weekend againProblem is that if we give up that week and concede we wont play, Footy will just take an extra week and we'll never get it back...
agreed we might aswell schedule games and if we dont play we dont play so be it..Problem is that if we give up that week and concede we wont play, Footy will just take an extra week and we'll never get it back...
Dead right. All victorian cricket associations should demand the CUOV make representations to the state government and demand they instruct local councils adopt better governance of their sports grounds. Especially those sports ovals where it is the council that is responsible for preparing turf wickets.Problem is that if we give up that week and concede we wont play, Footy will just take an extra week and we'll never get it back...
