Steven Smith, video link, general thoughts

This series has at least shown that Smith is an asset to the side, one way or another. He's a bit like Shahid Afridi really. You never really know whether he's there more for his batting or for his bowling but you know that on his day he could quite probably win a game for you with either.

I watched him bowl again on Friday and the ball that he got Trott with, Benaud reckoned it was a the slider then a couple of seconds later he said it was the top spinner. Watching the slow mo it just looked like a typical leg break with seam pointing toward second slip. What is ol' Richie on!?

Not a bad tactic he was using actually. He got both wickets pushing it quite wide of off stump to induce the drive and had both of them caught in the circle. Not a lot of turn there, but he still looks to be putting a lot less energy into his delivery than he used to, still not driving with his...

It seems that all the spin is imparted by the shoulder, not so much through driving with the hips/legs. Was Mailey considered a big turner of the ball?

South Africa have two leg spinners in their ODI squad for India series. One of them is Imran Tahir (the Pakistani born guy), who has incredible first class stats (500+ wickets at 24.00). Good to see him finally qualified to play for SA. The other guy is Faf Du Plessis, who's a leg spinning all...

    Wrist Spin Bowling (Part Four)

There needs to be some sort of incentive for youngsters to aspire to playing test cricket. Apparently, the pride of playing for your country will no longer suffice. The saddest sentence in that article is "Like it or not, cash is king in cricket." We all know it, but it's still so sad to think...

I watched Smith bowl a few overs in the test today. It looks like he's trimmed his run up a bit and he doesn't seem to be driving with his legs/hips the way he was a few months back in the ODI's. First I thought this was a deliberate tactic to just concentrate on line and length rather than...

    Wrist Spin Bowling (Part Four)

Thanks Chippyben. You too! Pity I can't get down to Melbourne for the Ashes. I did suggest it but my wife wouldn't have a bar of it. It'd be nice to see Aus go 2-1 up.

    Wrist Spin Bowling (Part Four)

Hey mate, the bowling was going really well up until last weekend. Went to the nets and just lost any sense of rhythm. The only thing I was having any luck bowling was the toppie. I don't currently play, haven't for a few years, but would like to get back into it. Like you, I was originally a...

    Richie Benuad Files

Surely, Benaud saying "the hand action is identical to that of the leg break" is referring to the fact that it follows on round-the-loop and is bowled with the same finger and wrist action as the leg break but with the wrist turned another 90 degrees and spun towards the bowler, rather than at...

    Wrist Spin Bowling (Part Four)

I have to agree with Chippyben, great piece of research. I agree with your conclusion too, that the slider and zooter (the zooter in particular) are just different names for the OBS. Perhaps we should petition Warnie to finally write that book. He seems a lot more open and honest now that his...

I'm stoke that Smith's getting a chance at test level. Like you said, Macca, he's the form allrounder. That 8 for in the last game was his best bowling in first class cricket. Do you reckon the English batsmen will tear him apart? They're playing pretty well now. Cook in form and Pietersen...

    Wrist Spin Bowling (Part Four)

I've actually noticed recently that a lot of good batsmen are listed as bowling legspin, but of course they never really have much of a bowl. Tendulkar does of course, apparently Bradman did, Katich and Michael Bevan with their chinamen and now Straussy. Are there any vids anywhere of Katich...

    Wrist Spin Bowling (Part Four)

Yeah, tried out a few of the suggestions. Tried to get the hips to drive through and get the arm down a little bit. Also, tried a slight change in wrist position and got some really good results. Went from not turning it at all tonight at the nets to getting it spinning quite sharply. Also, had...

I saw that. I agree, Hauritz and Smith should both play. The whole Doherty thing was very strange. After their constant backing of Hauritz they suddenly do a massive U-turn. If only they'd done the same thing with North sooner. What's the pitch like at the WACA? All I know is that it's...

After the hiding Aus received yesterday they've got to make some changes. I think bringing a few younger guys in could freshen things up a bit. Phil Hughes will likely come in for Katich (seeing as he's injured himself) which I think will be good. And I reckon they should bring Steve Smith in...

    Wrist Spin Bowling (Part Four)

Hey guys, I thought I'd chip in on this thread as I'm an aspiring leg spinner too. I've only taken it up this year but have been reading this stuff for awhile and have found it very useful, especially someblokecalleddave's wrist spin blog and his youtube channel, so cheers for that Dave!I...
