Ford Australia to steer future of domestic one-day cricket

Cricket Australia (CA) today (4 October) announced that Ford Australia will become domestic one-day cricket’s partner for the 2006-07 season at its launch at Fox Studios in Sydney.

The Ford Ranger One Day Cup (formerly the ING Cup) links the long-standing partner and its new vehicle, the Ford Ranger, to one of the premier one-day competitions in global cricket.

CA Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said he was delighted that Ford has extended its partnership with Cricket Australia and become the naming rights sponsor of ‘The Ford Ranger One Day Cup’.

“Ford has been a category partner of Cricket Australia since 2002-03 and we’re thrilled they will be the naming rights sponsor of our prestigious domestic one-day competition,” said Mr Sutherland.

“We are about to embark on one of the most hotly anticipated periods in Australian cricket history and the Ford Ranger Cup and Pura Cup will provide the future stars of Australian cricket a chance shine in what will be a golden summer.”

Ford Australia President Tom Gorman said: "Ford Australia is very excited to be part of one of the great domestic cricket competitions in the world.

"This competition has been a nursery for some of the best one-day players the world has seen including Andrew Symonds, Matthew Hayden, Michael Clarke and Michael Hussey.

"It is also the competition that introduced such successful innovations as the now-internationally accepted run rate bonus point.

"The dynamic nature of today's light commercial market makes this the ideal time to introduce a new brand via the Ford Ranger One Day Cup sponsorship,” Mr Gorman said.

Fox Sports also took centre stage at today’s marquee launch. From 11 October, cricket fans across the country will be able to watch the first of 27 Ford Ranger One Day Cup matches on Fox Sports when Queensland take on Tasmania at the Gabba.

As well as extensive Ford Ranger One Day Cup coverage, Fox Sports will telecast some KFC Twenty20 Big Bash matches and the Pura Cup Final, providing exciting coverage of Australia’s favourite sport.

Of the Fox Sports partnership, Mr Sutherland said: “What better time for Fox Sports to join Cricket Australia in giving cricket fans unrivalled domestic cricket coverage including the Pura Cup Final, Ford Ranger One Day Cup and the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash.”

“We believe that the Fox Sports coverage will help give Australian cricket fans greater access to the game than ever before,” he said.

Cricket Australia also confirmed at the launch that Pura would continue their eight-year association with the Pura Cup, regarded as the toughest first-class domestic competition in world cricket. The first round of Pura Cup matches kick off in the week commencing 13 October.

The women’s domestic competition, the Commonwealth Bank WNCL, also commences shortly with the first match scheduled on 11 November when South Australia take on Western Australia.

In elaborating on Ford’s new association with the domestic one-day competition, Mr Gorman said The Ford Ranger is Ford Australia's new light commercial vehicle and goes on sale later this year, replacing the Ford Courier.

"The Ford Ranger offers everything today's light truck owner wants – a dependable, reliable truck for Monday to Friday, and a comfortable, feature-packed recreational vehicle for weekend getaways and sporting events.

"The new Ranger provides all those features and more, and is set to become Australia's next great all-rounder.

"It was the obvious choice to sponsor an exciting competition like the Ford Ranger One Day Cup," Mr Gorman added.

Ford Ranger One Day Cup preview from the Cricket Australia website

Ford Ranger One Day Cup begins on Wednesday afternoon in Brisbane with Queensland playing Tasmania, while defending champion New South Wales kicks off its campaign against South Australia in a re-match of last year's final, on Sunday in Sydney.

The other match from the opening round sees the Victorian Bushrangers travel to Perth to take on Western Australia in a day-nighter at the WACA on Friday.

The Bulls will be looking to improve on last year's performance where they won just three of ten matches and propped up the table. Skipper Jimmy Maher did the job last season with the bat, making 349 runs in ten matches, but will need much more support. The Bulls depended on James Hopes for wickets last year, the medium pacer taking 15 from seven matches.

Michael Kasprowicz will spend an extended period on the sidelines with a severe back problem, but the Bulls should be able to cover that with the experience of Andy Bichel.

The Tigers finished second from bottom last year after Michael Bevan missed most of the season with a knee injury. It meant Michael Di Venuto, who scored 382 runs in nine matches last season, had to do much of the work. Tim Paine backed him up with 323 at 35.89, but with Bevan, possibly the world's best-ever one-day batsman, back, the Tigers are sure to be a much more difficult proposition. Adam Griffith's contribution with the ball - he took 14 wickets at 26 last year - will also be important.

The Warriors, who won five and lost five last season, will look to get the most out of Justin Langer and Damien Martyn before the start of the Ashes. Martyn scored 337 runs at 84.25 in the competition last year, but won't be available until after the Champions Trophy.

The Warriors will need to get more out of their pace attack. Medium-pacer Peter Worthington, on the back of his 16 wickets season last year, will be vital, while Ben Edmonson, Steve Magoffin and Brett Dorey will be looking to former Zimbabwean international Sean Ervine to bolster their attack.

The Vics just missed the final again last year despite David Hussey cracking 535 runs in ten matches at an average of 76.43, including the season's fastest fifty against the Warriors. Michael Klinger also looked at ease at one-day level with 364 in ten matches, but they need more from all-rounder and skipper Cameron White, and their bowling attack, spearheaded by Mick Lewis.

South Australia had an excellent campaign last year, only to fall at the final hurdle. Mark Cosgrove, named Player of the Year, spearheaded the season, which featured six wins and three losses at the round robin stage. He hit four fifties and two centuries in making 591 runs at 73.88. He found plenty of support from skipper Darren Lehmann, who averaged 51.63 in his 11 matches. Greg Blewett, who scored the competition's fastest century in 2005-06 (89 balls v Queensland) will lend his experience.

The Redbacks also feature the fearsome new ball attack of Jason Gillespie and Shaun Tait, while Mark Cleary, who took an equal Cup-best 16 wickets last season, will be looking to make an impact again.

The champions, the Blues, are looking dangerous again, with Phil Jaques, who set the competition alight last year with four centuries and 683 runs at an average of over 85, leading the way with plenty of help from experienced wicket-keeper Brad Haddin. Daniel Christian has powered himself into the squad with big scores in grade cricket, while Stuart MacGill, Matt Nicholson and Doug Bollinger will be looking for support from newcomers such as Scott Coyte with the ball.

It looms an intriguing season again, and like last year when just 12 points separated first and fifth, it will be tight with bonus points likely to prove the difference between an appearance in the final on February 25 and the also rans.
