3rd Test: England vs West Indies at Old Trafford

England leads the series 1-0. The odds were extremely heavy in England's favor all week long, as it seems everyone expects yet another shambolic diplay from an undermanned West Indies side.

No Flintoff as usual for England. Sammy makes his test debut for West Indies. Fidel Edwards comes in for Powell, and Chanderpaul is back. Apparently Gayle is far from fully fit, and he'll only bat in this test. No bowling from him.

England
Strauss, Cook, Vaughan, Piertersen, Collingwood, Bell, Prior, Plunkett, Sidebottom, Harmison, Panesar

West Indies
CH Gayle, D Ganga, Devon Smith, S Chanderpaul, RS Morton, DJ Bravo, DJG Sammy, D Ramdin, CD Collymore, JE Taylor, FH Edwards

Re: 3rd Test: England vs West Indies at Old Trafford

England 138-4 after 45 overs.

Collymore has looked very good thus far, taking 2-21 from his 13 overs. Alastair Cook has been the batting star for England so far, scoring 60, but Darren Sammy eventually got him for his first test wicket.

In fact, Sammy has been fantastic so far. 11 overs, 1 wicket and 17 runs, but a full 6 of those overs have been maidens!

Re: 3rd Test: England vs West Indies at Old Trafford

Taylor gets Collingwood lbw. That's his second wicket.

England 166-5

Vaughan may have made a mistake when he chose to bat this morning.

Re: 3rd Test: England vs West Indies at Old Trafford

Day 1 finishes with England at 296-7
Bell is not out on 77
All 5 of the West Indies bowlers picked up wickets

Now that they're into the England bowlers, West Indies should finish them off for about 350, and will be batting before lunch tomorrow.

Re: 3rd Test: England vs West Indies at Old Trafford

England were bowled out for 370. Ian Bell made 97 before edging Collymore to Ramdin. The rest of the lower order all made it to double figures before being dismissed bar Monty Panesar.

Fidel Edwards and Corey Collymore picked up three wickets each.

West Indies are making a fist of this game so far. They've moved to 3/138 and are scoring at 5.26 an over. Devon Smith is 36 not out and Runako Morton was just dismissed for 35.

English bowling has been pretty wayward, Steve Harmison has picked up 2/33 depsite spraying a few balls here and there. Only Liam Plunkett has been accurate.

Re: 3rd Test: England vs West Indies at Old Trafford

The follow on has been avoided!!!

(That's the type of thing that Bangladesh or Zimbabwe usually get excited about. Go figure.)

West Indies are 197-4 after 39 overs. They're scoring at more than 5 per over! Chanderpaul is West Indies' high scorer, up to 43 so far, and is in there with Bravo right now.

Re: 3rd Test: England vs West Indies at Old Trafford

Bravo was Sidebotom's first victim of the day, and now he's got Ramdin out fairly quickly, for just 5.

West Indies 224-6

Re: 3rd Test: England vs West Indies at Old Trafford

Darren Sammy gone for one on his test debut.
Hey, at least it wasn't a duck.

225-7

Re: 3rd Test: England vs West Indies at Old Trafford

And now Taylor is out for a duck

225-8

Re: 3rd Test: England vs West Indies at Old Trafford

West Indies all out for 229

What a collapse!!

Sidebottom got 3 and Panesar got 4.

Re: 3rd Test: England vs West Indies at Old Trafford

Good recovery from England, bad collapse from the West Indies
this is a 4 test series isnt it?

Re: 3rd Test: England vs West Indies at Old Trafford

England were bowled out for 313 in their second innings, a very ordinary effort after being 4/265 when Cook departed. Cook made 106 and was supported by Pietersen, Collingwood and Vaughan who made 68, 42 and 40 respectively.

Darren Sammy picked up 7 second innings wickets and finished with figures of 7/66, a wonderful effort.

West Indies target score is 455 and seems a long way out of reach. They are alrady one wicket down, having lost Daren Ganga for a duck. They are 1/22 after 8 overs.

West Indies have two days to chase the target score down but I don't think they will do it.

Re: 3rd Test: England vs West Indies at Old Trafford

West Indies don't even look like they're trying to win at the moment.

They find themselves 3/92 in the 34th over. The batsmen have simply shut up shop and really aren't trying to score runs.

Totally the wrong approach by the Windies, they still need 363 runs to win and they won't win by simply blocking and leaving the ball. Devon Smith looked determined but was dismissed a short time ago for 42.

Re: 3rd Test: England vs West Indies at Old Trafford

West Indies have moved to 3/127. They seem quite content to take their time but they are still going quite slowly.

However, Runako Morton seems very determined to help his side get victory. He's moved to 34 with Shiv Chanderpaul on 18.

Still need 328 to win. 51 overs remain today.

And Panesar just drops Chanderpaul, that could prove costly.

Re: 3rd Test: England vs West Indies at Old Trafford

The Windies keep fighting, they've progressed to 4/241. Runako Morton fell for a stubborn 54.

Chanderpaul and Dwayne Bravo have kept going, Chanderpaul is on 59 with Bravo on 44 and is scoring quicker than the batters before him.

22 and a half overs left today and the Windies need 214 more runs with over a day remaining. Things are starting to turn in their favour but there is still a long way to go yet.

Re: 3rd Test: England vs West Indies at Old Trafford

West Indies are 5/301 at stumps on Day 4. This has been a superb effort so far after looking out of it early on.

Bravo fell not long after my previous post for a well made 49, unlucky not to get his 50. Shiv Chanderpaul is still there on 81 with Dinesh Ramdin on 26 not out. If there was ever a time for Ramdin to shine, that time is right now.

Monty Panesar is the best of the bowlers with 3/87 but he has bowled 34 overs.

154 runs to go, can the Windies get there?

Re: 3rd Test: England vs West Indies at Old Trafford

Game in the blance here. Dinesh Ramdin was dismissed for 34 and Darren Sammy fell to Panesar for 25.

West Indies are 7/364, they need another 91 runs. Chanderpaul has moved to 98 and Jerome Taylor is not on 3. Taylor was dropped in the previous over by Paul Collingwood at first slip. It could prove costly.

England have dropped a few catches in this innings, can West Indies make them pay for their errors?
