Are Six-Packs good for your cricket?

I am thinking about getting a six-pack, but now I am hesitating because i am wondering wether it will bring any benefit to my cricket. So is a six pack helpful or unhelpful or a hinderance?

I was told that a six pack can be unhealthy as it means you're percentage of bodyfat is bordering on the low side but I guess it all depends on your build type.

Welcome to the site Ali,

A six pack is only help for cricket if its Fosters and you've won a cup

In serious note, a six pack looks good but isn't overly needed, theres other muscles you could work on, and are more important.

I quite like your turn of phrase Ali. It almost sounds like you are thinking of popping to the shops for one.

To answer your question, a six pack is a commonly agreed term for lower body fat and enlarge rectus abdominus muscles.

Abs start to show for males at around 15% bodyfat and become more of a six pack somewhere nearer 10%. You can maintain 8-10% bodyfat with a very good diet and regular intense exercise. This level of bodyfat is good for your cricket as you are carrying less dead weight and will have better mobility. It's also perfectly healthy if achieved with sensible eating.

Below 8% and you are looking at competitive bodybuilder levels which can be unsafe for longer than a few weeks. Most cricketers don't have that problem!

If you train your core regularly one side effect is stronger rectus abdominus muscles. So you get more of a six pack.

However, if you try and get a six pack by doing 100 sit ups a day you will not only fail, you are also are risking injury (bad for cricket) and not improving your core strength.

Overall I would suggest that if your main aim is better cricket I would focus on getting lean and strong, especially with core training and strength training and do plenty of skills work. The six pack will come as a result.

So use a six pack as a sign of success rather than a goal in itself.

Re: Are Six-Packs good for your cricket?

That's not a simple question Ali, as there are multiple factors.

The down side is an increased potential for low back injury whilst doing ab isolation exercises, core imbalances through over training the rectus abdominus above the other core muscles and non-cricket specific strength.

The up side is the potential for a more efficient core and girls swooning at your feet ;)
