Champions Trophy: India vs West Indies

Well, West Indies have won 5 out of their last 7 ODI's against India. It's going to be tough to continue that form though, as this time the crowd will massively be against them, and West Indies may be missing a number of key players.

current standings:

Code:
Group A
             P W L NR T Points NRR
India 1 1 - - - 2 +1.771
Australia 2 1 1 - - 2 +0.507
West Indies 1 1 - - - 2 +0.200
England 2 - 2 - - 0 -1.522

If West Indies win: West Indies will advance to the semifinals. England will be eliminated. The final match between India and Australia will be for the other semifinal spot.

If India win: Nobody clinches a spot in the semifinals. No team will be eliminated.

How do you like that? West Indies and India are both tied with 2 points after one game, and yet the scenarios that would occur after a win for them are totally different. Pretty cool, eh?

As of right now, a full range of scenarios are still open to play out in Group A. The 4 teams could finish 6-4-2-0, India could go undefeated and the other 3 teams could finish in a tie for second place with 2 points each, India, Australia, and West Indies could finish in a 3-way tie for first with 4 points each, or the points could finish 4-4-2-2.

Anyway, West Indies may be short-handed today.

Lara's fitness remains the buzz

Lara will be a game-time decision, and Collymore is back home with his expectant wife. Chanderpaul is apparently healthy again though, so that's one good thing for them. But if Lara can't make it, they're going to need some big scores from Gayle or Morton or some other folks.

Go on INDIA!!!!! Catch West Indies at their weakest without Lara, and take on New Zealand in the semi-finals!!!!

BTW, how do you spell "dew"?

Re: Champions Trophy: India vs West Indies

India 223/9 after 50.

West Indies 74/1 after 15 overs.
They're off to a fine start, but Gayle is out.
Chanderpual and Bravo are the current batsmen.

Re: Champions Trophy: India vs West Indies

Harbhajan just got Bravo lbw.
West Indies 100-2 after 22.
They're moving along just fine, and if they can avoid losing too many wickets, they should be able to win fairly comfortably.

Re: Champions Trophy: India vs West Indies

Sehwag comes on and gets Chanderpaul in his first over.
That was huge, Chanderpaul was on 51.

West Indies 120-3 after 27.

Re: Champions Trophy: India vs West Indies

135-3 after 32 overs.
The required rate is still very managable for the West Indies. They need 89 from 18 overs. Sarwan is on 20 and Morton is on 4. The big question is whether Lara will come in next or not.

Re: Champions Trophy: India vs West Indies

167-3 after 40 overs.

Harbhajan has been very economical, allowing only 27 runs, but now that his 10 overs are done, the runs aren't exactly going to slow down for the West Indies.

They need 57 runs from the last 10 overs.

Re: Champions Trophy: India vs West Indies

185-3 after 44 overs

West Indies need 39 from the last 6 overs. That's 6.5 per over.
The crowd is cheering every dot ball.

Re: Champions Trophy: India vs West Indies

200-3 after 46

They need 24 from the last 4 overs. Not even the West Indies can blow it from here.
It's been a great 80 run partnership between Sarwan and Morton. Good to see them come through when Lara would rather rest his back.

Re: Champions Trophy: India vs West Indies

Morton out lbw for 45.

212-4 after 47.5, West Indies need 12 runs from 13 balls

Re: Champions Trophy: India vs West Indies

Lara out.
Then on a crazy ball, India drop a catch but then get Sarwan on a run out. They were going for 2 and it was nowhere near close.

West Indies now 219-6 after 49

They need 5 runs from the last over.

Re: Champions Trophy: India vs West Indies

Agarkar bowls Smith on the first ball of the final over!!!!

219-7

5 needed from 5 remaining

Re: Champions Trophy: India vs West Indies

4 needed from the final 3 balls

and Samuels hits a boundary!

West Indies win by 3 wickets, 224/7 after 49.4 overs. What an exciting finish!

Re: Champions Trophy: India vs West Indies

Chanderpaul was named MOTM for his 51.

So West Indies are the second team in the semifinals, joining New Zealand. England are eliminated, regardless of what they do in their final match against the West Indies. Both the Pakistan/South Africa match and the India/Australia match are now quarterfinals.

Re: Champions Trophy: India vs West Indies

The turning point of the match was when Mahendra Singh Dhoni stupidly ran out Dravid for absolutely no reason. Dravid had been going in very well at that point. This mistake totally messed up Dhoni's mind, and he simply couldn't play his natural game for a long, long time. It wasn't past the 45th over that he was even holding his bat upright properly as an attacking hitter should do. The middle strech wasted a lot of valuable time. Dhoni should have been personally responsible for getting at least 20-30 more runs on board during that period, which he didn't. He got a couple of sixes very late, but it was too little, too late.

During West Indies batting, Munaf got unfortunately injured, only Agarkar was available as a choice for the last over, and the rest is history.

Having said that, great job by both Sarwan and Chanderpaul, and it is a great job that West Indies have managed to be the first team in semi-finals from a tough group. They've beaten both Australia and India on their home soil, which are great feats.

Re: Champions Trophy: India vs West Indies

I am an optimist when it comes to the fortunes of the Indian Cricket Team. We did not get the desired result last night. Using an Old Adage, I stress, " A battle lost, does not mean, we loose the war." We must not loose faith in the "Process"/ourselves. I anticipate the Pakistan vs South Africa match, today, with great interest.
