Darwin & District Cricket - 2011

Round 2 - Saturday 16th April
Nightcliff drew with Tracy Village at Nightcliff Oval
Palmerston lost to PINT at Woodroffe Oval
Waratah drew with Darwin at Gardens Oval
Southern Districts - Bye

The round before Easter was a non-event again with two wash-outs, leaving only Darwin and Nightcliff to be the only sides without a hit in the middle.

Round 3 - Saturday 30th April
Darwin vs Palmerston at Kahlin Oval
Tracy Village vs PINT at Tracy Village Oval
Southern Districts vs Nightcliff at Fred's Pass
Waratah - Bye

The coming round and the last of the T20 matches will be a cracker. All the draftees have arrived, so sides should literally be at their strongest and the weather has finally turned it on. All matches should be evenly contested with TV vs PINT the match of the round, their rivalry and depth in each side should make for some entertainment.

http://www.ntnews.com.au/article/2011/04/28/228211_ntsport.html - A write up about Will Sheridan who is playing for Darwin.

There is also scheduled to be a decent write-up in Friday's paper regarding all the draftees. Interesting times ahead for all involved.

The Players Draft for 2011 has progressed with 13 players available for selection. There are two from each state with one player from ACT. The Draft appears to be better organised this season and should make it easier for both the clubs and players to benefit from the experience. As per last years draft, the first selection goes with the last place on the ladder and so on. At this stage there is still seven A grade teams in the competition, so Tracy Village will only have one pick.

How does the draft work, are there palyers in Darwin who might be interested in playing in Mackay - Qld during the summer season here.

Goes in order of the ladder, bottom team gets first pick and so on. It has strengthened the competition, still a massive gap between first grade and second though. Yeah there are a few players who look to play else where in the off season, best option would be either to contact the clubs or NT Cricket.

Round 4 - Saturday 7th May
Tracy Village 2 for 188 defeated Waratah 184 at Tracy Village Oval
Night 141 defeated by PINT 2 for 144 at Nightcliff Oval
Southern Districts 154 defeated by Darwin 2 for 155 at Fred's Pass
Palmerston - Bye

Strong wins by TV, PINT and Darwin. Crucial matches next weekend if teams want to remain in the hunt for the One Day Final. TV need to knock off Darwin at home, while Palmerston would have to win all three matches with bonus points and hope other results went their way. Nightcliff are in the same boat, needing to win their last two one dayers with bonus points to give it a shake and defend their One Day Title. PINT and Darwin can virtually seal the top two spots by winning this weekend.

Next weeks round;

Round 5 - Saturday 14th May
Darwin vs Tracy Village at Kahlin Oval
Waratah vs Palmerston
PINT vs Southern Districts
Nightcliff - Bye

Match of the round between Darwin and a resurgent TV. Both teams have depth batting and a score over 270 would be the minimum required on Kahlin. Waratah and Palmerston both need a win to get their season back on track otherwise they'll be doing hard yards come the second half of the seasn, Palmerston should have Hanna, Williams and Short for this game. PINT are leading the pack with convincing wins against all comers, Districts should be no problem for them unless Pemble, Ross and Silk pull something out of the bag.

Ladder - Points
1. Darwin - 13
2. PINT - 13
3. Nightcliff - 8
4. Tracy Village - 7
5. Palmerston - 4
6. Southern District - 4
7. Waratah - 2

Round 6 - Saturday 21st May
PINT vs Waratah at Marrara No. 1
Palmerston vs Nightcliff at Woodroffe Oval
Southern Districts vs Tracy Village at Fred's Pass
Darwin - Bye

PINT are on a role and should account for Waratah, though anything could happen considering that no one has fired yet for Tahs. Palmerston can stay in the hunt for the OD Final by beating Nightcliff, so can Nightcliff if they get the bonus point. Southern Districts need some magic again, though Bell almost did it for them last week but Tracy Village should be too strong.

Round 6 - Saturday 21st May
PINT 176 defeated by Waratah 9 for177 at Marrara No. 1
Palmerston 8 for 226 defeated Nightcliff 168 at Woodroffe Oval
Southern Districts 98 defeated by Tracy Village 2 for 99 at Fred's Pass
Darwin - Bye

http://www.ntnews.com.au/article/2011/05/22/234691_ntsport.html - Match write-up.

Ladder - Points
1. PINT - 17
2. Tracy Village - 16
3. Palmerston - 14
4. Darwin - 13
5. Nightcliff - 8
6. Waratah - 6
7. Southern District - 4

Round 7 - Saturday 28th May
Palmerston vs Southern Districts at Woodroffe Oval
Darwin vs PINT at Kahlin Oval
Waratah vs Nightcliff at Gardens Oval
Tracy Village - Bye

Last round of one day cricket, with the top four wide open. Palmerston win, they're through to the One Day Final and if Darwin win well, they sneak in as well. Palmerston are always around the mark and should knock over Districts who are really starting to struggle. The Darwin and PINT game should be well contested and it may come down to the ability with the ball on who wins this one. Waratah have a chance to rectify their season, a win here, gets them right back in the hunt, but a loss and results not going their way, means they'll have to win close to all their two day cricket to be in contention for finals. Nightcliff same boat.

Will do a mid-season write up after this round.

Round 7 - Saturday 28th May
Palmerston 89 defeated by Southern Districts 3 for 90 at Woodroffe Oval
Darwin 6 for 252 defeated PINT 247 at Kahlin Oval
Waratah 3 for 319 defeated Nightcliff 184 at Gardens Oval
Tracy Village - Bye

After the final round of one day matches, there is no clear cut team standing above the rest. PINT and Darwin will face off for the Casuarina Club One Day Cup (played on Sunday 12th June). All teams are within a good two day win of each other, meaning there could be some serious ladder hopping over the next few games. Waratah are beginning to hit form and if their top order fires, they should be a formidable prospect.

NT News write up - http://www.ntnews.com.au/article/2011/05/29/236451_ntsport.html

Ladder - Points
1. Darwin - 17
2. PINT - 17
3. Tracy Village - 16
4. Palmerston - 14
5. Waratah - 11
6. Southern District - 9
7. Nightcliff - 8

Round 8 - Saturday 4th & 11th June
Nightcliff vs Darwin at Nightcliff Oval
Palmerston vs Tracy Village at Woodroffe Oval
Southern Districts vs Waratah at Fred's Pass
PINT - Bye

The two day matches begin today and all teams can't afford to slip up this weekend with the ladder tightly bunched. Palmerston are a mixed bag at the moment, their batting is brilliant one week, woeful the next and against Tracy Village, it'll need to be on song. They're generally close games between these two, so form counts for very little. Nightcliff desperately need a win and it'll be tough going against a peaking Eagles outfit. The Tigers top order need to fire but can't see their bats making enough or their bowling troubling the Darwin top order. Southern Districts and Waratah break into the top four with a solid win, Districts upsetting Palmerston last week, will hope to do so again with Waratah without skipper Brett Gardiner. Hill takes over the reigns in possibly his last match before he heads back to Victoria.

Round 8 - Saturday 4th & 11th June
Nightcliff 240 vs Darwin 3 for 60 at Nightcliff Oval
Palmerston 5 for 99 vs Tracy Village 215 at Woodroffe Oval
Southern Districts 8 for 274 vs Waratah at Fred's Pass
PINT - Bye

All matches are evenly poised, with Districts in the best position out of any side.

The One Day Final is also on this weekend, being held at Gardens Oval due to the renovations currently occurring at Marrara. Should make for a great game.

Casuarina Club Cup One Day Final - Sunday 12th June
Darwin vs PINT at Gardens Oval

Mid-season review in order of ladder position:

Darwin
Have started off well but lack a genuine pace option at the top. Their spinners, Thiel, Hannan and Fawcett are doing the bulk of the job with the ball, if they fail during the two day matches, then they could be chasing some serious runs. Their batting is yet to fire, with Fawcett having the only impact so far. If form continues, they should maintain a top two position.

Runs: Fawcett - 204 Wickets: Hannan - 10

PINT
Along with Darwin, their start to the season is completely different to 2010. With an all round side capable of producing big scores, PINT are contenders this season. Nick Berry is leading from the front with the bat, while the workload is being shared with the ball. Can't see them finishing any lower than their current position.

Runs: Berry - 333 Wickets: Bayly - 8

Tracy Village
Wouldn't be happy with their varied start this season. Inconsistency has cost them at the top of the order, while their bowling depth changes week to week. Relying too heavily on Crowe, Cachopa and Cooper to get their runs, with the middle order not pulling their weight. Matthew Day is meant to return but this may have changed. Still an even side that will be hard to beat, will threaten the top two positions if they get their house in order.

Runs: Crowe - 198 Wickets: Smith - 10

Palmerston
Palmerston form has resembled the stock market and with most sides thinking they'll be able to walk away with the points. A shock loss to Southern Districts cost them a OD Final birth, while ins and outs have been upsetting their team balance. Still a young side, they need captain Chatto and former skipper Williams to step up if they're to stay in the four. Hard to see that happening and may fall off the radar in the next couple of games.

Runs: Bleakley - 216 Wickets: Doran - 12

Waratah
A strong side on paper has meant nothing for Tahs. A unlucky result due to Duckworth Lewis in the opening match, may have set the tone for their season. Good wins against Nightcliff and PINT have got them back on track but they're relying heavily on their bats to make runs otherwise they'll be under the gun for the rest of the season. Hill is unlikely for the remainder of the season which leaves a large hole in their middle order.

Runs: Wells - 198 Wickets: Lane - 11

Southern Districts
An opening win against Tahs and then a underdog win against Palmerston has kept the Crocs season alive. Their imports in Silk and Ross have been hit and miss, while they desperately need their locals to stand up in Pemble and Bell. Bowling depth is going to be their main issue, with no real support for Pemble. Maybe able to sneak into the four if they continue to produce upsets but unlikely to finish any higher than 5th.

Runs: Bell - 161 Wickets: Pemble - 5

Nightcliff
The Tigers have fallen from grace, currently sitting bottom and not much else going for them. Washed out matches may have cost them but they also lack bowling and batting depth. Could be a long season, particularly if Gilmour doesn't remain. Can't see them improving from here.

Runs: Rasool - 163 Wickets: Gilmour - 6

Round 8 - Saturday 4th & 11th June
Nightcliff 240 & 4 for 122 defeated Darwin 124 at Nightcliff Oval
Palmerston 240 & 8 for 180 defeated Tracy Village 215 & 4 for 202 at Woodroffe Oval
Southern Districts 8 for 274 defeated by Waratah 349 at Fred's Pass
PINT - Bye

Nightcliff rolled Darwin, TV set up a game with Palmerston who collected outright points, while a last wicket partnership got Waratah over the line.

Casuarina Club Cup One Day Final - Sunday 12th June
Darwin 1for 200 defeated PINT 9 for 199 at Gardens Oval

Round 9 - Saturday 18th & 25th June
Darwin vs Waratah at Gardens Oval
PINT vs Palmerston at Marrara
Tracy Village vs Nightcliff at Tracy Village Oval
Southern Districts - Bye

Some serious ladder hopping happened after last weekends results. Darwin and Waratah need a win to keep in check with the top four, Palmerston and TV can create a gap by knocking over PINT and Nightcliff which would almost push them two games clear. Hill, Gilmour and Sheridan have all returned to VIC, Gilmour is a significant blow for the Tigers as their bowling stocks are short. Expect to see some tons racked up this game.

Ladder - Points
1. Palmerston - 29
2. Tracy Village - 24
3. Waratah - 22
4. Darwin - 21
5. Nightcliff - 19
6. PINT - 17
7. Southern District - 14

Round 9 - Saturday 18th & 25th June
Darwin 3 for 25 vs Waratah 327 at Gardens Oval
PINT 82 vs Palmerston 123 & 1 for 19 at Marrara
Tracy Village vs Nightcliff 303 at Tracy Village Oval
Southern Districts - Bye

Looks like Palmerston could get well ahead of the pack if they put in another outright performance. Apparently it was a green seamer in the middle of driest dry season in last five seasons I've played. Darwin stitched themselves up by bowling Tahs out and getting through their overs too quick to be in trouble and realistically have their season on the line. Nightcliff will struggle to defend 303 with TV's batting line up.
