It does help in many cases but I cannot say how... in that whether it is physical, physiological or psychological... without research.
I do not use it, although trained to, but many of my colleagues do. The only reason I do not use it is purely because I have not had a case that has needed it. My skills have, so far, been enough!
Unfortunately, I have seen some real cringe worthy applications in the amateur sport. Bearing in mind its purpose, the person applying the tape really does need to know the muscles well; actions, origins, insertions, innovations etc. If not, you can actually inhibit the muscle rather than help it!
I am really a fan of lymphatic drainage for maintenance as well as rehabilitation but I prefer the manual procedure.
