Group A - Australia vs South Africa

The biggest game of the group stage is here. Australia play South Africa, one versus two with this game to determine who wins the group and who gets to take through points to the Super Eight stage of the tournament.

This game will be an absolute gem. Short boundaries down the ground and pitch with few cracks and little grass cover. Expect some big scores today, 300+ runs. Andrew Symonds has been named in the Australian eleven.

Interestingly, Graeme Smith has decided to bowl first.

Australia XI:
AC Gilchrist, ML Hayden, RT Ponting, MJ Clarke, A Symonds, MEK Hussey, SR Watson, GB Hogg, NW Bracken, SW Tait, GD McGrath

South Africa XI:
GC Smith, AB de Villiers, JH Kallis, HH Gibbs, AG Prince, JM Kemp, MV Boucher, SM Pollock, AJ Hall, CK Langeveldt, M Ntini

Re: Group A - Australia vs South Africa

Australia are 0/50 after 5 overs.

This ground is small down the ground judging from the cricinfo commentary. Pollock and Ntini are really struggling here, both have been very expensive. Pollock has just been hit for two consecutive sixes by Matthew Hayden.

Hayden is 27 of just 11 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes. Gilchrist is 23 off 19 with 4 fours.

We could be in for a massive score today.

Re: Group A - Australia vs South Africa

Crunch, crunch, crunch! WHAT A START!

Re: Group A - Australia vs South Africa

111/1 after 15 overs, it is looking to be a big score for sure, if it is maintained

Re: Group A - Australia vs South Africa

Matthew Hayden has just hit the fastest one-day century in World Cup history. Has taken him just 66 balls.

Australia are 1/165 in the 23rd over, Hayden on 101 with Ponting on 19.

No end in sight to this massacre at the moment.

Re: Group A - Australia vs South Africa

Hayden out for a blazing 101

Australia 174-2 after 2 overs.

Looks like Australia and South Africa are aiming to give us another record smashing thriller!

Cracking run-rate. ;)

Re: Group A - Australia vs South Africa

266-2 after 37 overs

Ponting and Clarke both have their 50's.
If either of them can last, they should reach a century easily.

2, 25, what's the difference? :p

Re: Group A - Australia vs South Africa

328-3 after 45.1

Ponting out for 91

A decent job by the bowlers here to keep the run rate from getting completely out of hand. There's more singles and fewer boundaries than I would have expected.

Re: Group A - Australia vs South Africa

Clarke run out on 92.
That's tough luck on his part.

Re: Group A - Australia vs South Africa

Well there you go, 377-6

that was a great final over from Hall, only giving up 4 runs, but the 49 that preceded it all went Australia's way

But when these two play, no total is safe.
And we saw what the South African batsmen can do at this ground already.
I doubt we'll see any 36-run overs today, but I'm sure South Africa will put up a fight.

Re: Group A - Australia vs South Africa

South Africa 100-0 after 13.1

They're right on target so far, but there's still a long, long way to go.
But definitely a great start for them.

Re: Group A - Australia vs South Africa

A SUPERB throw from Watson gets de Villiers run out for 92.

South Africa 160-1 from 21.

That really was an incredible throw.

Re: Group A - Australia vs South Africa

Watson, Hogg, and Tait have really slowed the runs down since Graeme Smith went out injured with cramps. In fact, the runs slowed down as soon as de Villiers was out.

And now Hogg gets Gibbs! Stumped!

South Africa 220-2 after 31.3

Australia was 204-2 after 31.3, but South Africa has also lost Smith to cramps, and this was right about the time when Clarke and Ponting really got set in and started smashing a lot of boundaries.

Re: Group A - Australia vs South Africa

Prince out for 1.

South Africa 223-3

The momentum has definitely swung Australia's way at the moment. There's still a few batsment left for the South Africans though, especially if Graeme Smith makes a short return for the final 5 or so overs to hit some boundaries.

Re: Group A - Australia vs South Africa

Tait gets Boucher. That could be the end of South Africa's hopes today.

They're 256-4 after 39.

They need 122 runs from 11 overs, at a rate of more than 11 per over.

Re: Group A - Australia vs South Africa

South Africa all out for 294.
That's a pretty comprehensive win for the Aussies in the end.
And that's a bit of a collapse from the South Africans.

That's a big leg up for the Australians in the quest for the semifinals.

Re: Group A - Australia vs South Africa

What a win.
South Africa are a bunch of arrogant pigs when it comes to playing cricket. They love to talk themselves up. Hopefully Australia's big win against South Africa will stop the rot.

Re: Group A - Australia vs South Africa

you'll find pidgeon fan, that only one player likes to talk to South Africa up, it's the skipper. The rest have a tendency to say next to nothing
