Group A - Netherlands v South Africa

This isn't expected to be a very close match, but it's an interesting match-up nonetheless, thanks to some of the players on the Dutch side. Also thanks to the fact that the South Africans, despite only recently leaping into the #1 spot worldwide, had a bit of trouble in their 2 warm-up matches, and didn't exactly look like a #1 team.

Looks like this game will be delayed by at least 90 minutes, maybe more.
It's sunny there, but the ground is still drying from earlier rain.
There's an inspection in about 45 minutes.

Re: Group A - Netherlands v South Africa

The start time still hasn't been confirmed.
It definitely won't be 50 overs per side today.

Re: Group A - Netherlands v South Africa

The match will finally start in about 30 minutes.

40 overs per side.

Netherlands have won the toss and will bowl first. Graeme Smith says he would have made the same decision.

Ntini was a late arriver, and he gets today off. Schiferli out hurt for Holland.

Netherlands B Zuiderent, DJ Reekers, RN ten Doeschate, AN Kervezee, ES Szwarczynski, DLS van Bunge, TBM de Leede, PW Borren, WF Stelling, LP van Troost, J Smits

South Africa GC Smith, AB de Villiers, JH Kallis, HH Gibbs, AG Prince, JM Kemp, MV Boucher, SM Pollock, AJ Hall, CK Langeveldt, A Nel

Re: Group A - Netherlands v South Africa

Game is underway.

Stelling gets de Villiers to nick the second ball to the keeper.
OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

South Africa 0-1 after 0.2 overs!!!
Suffice it to say, the Dutch team is celebrating the best possible start!!!

Re: Group A - Netherlands v South Africa

That was a maiden wicket for Stelling.
Reekers came in and gave up only one run in the second over.

South Africa 1-1 after 2 overs!!!

Re: Group A - Netherlands v South Africa

Stelling give up 2 runs in his second, and then Reekers bowls a maiden over to Kallis!!

3-1 after 4 overs!!!!!

Re: Group A - Netherlands v South Africa

Some great fielding from the Dutch almost led to two runouts, but they just missed on both occasions.

And now Kallis and Smith are starting to abuse the orange bowlers.

48-1 after 10 overs

Re: Group A - Netherlands v South Africa

90-1 after 15

I'm glad the Dutch got some enjoyment and celebration out of their first few overs, because I think the rest of the day is going to be pretty rough for them.

Re: Group A - Netherlands v South Africa

136-2 after 23

Looks like South Africa might finish their 40 overs somewhere in the 250-270 range. (Though sometimes when you have the #1 team taking on an Associate, the runs could flow even faster than you'd expect.)

Re: Group A - Netherlands v South Africa

Herschelle Gibbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Six 6's in one over!!!
36 runs!
What a record!!!!!

Suffice it to say, you cant do any better than that!

Re: Group A - Netherlands v South Africa

WOW

29.6 van Bunge to Gibbs, SIX
29.5 van Bunge to Gibbs, SIX
29.4 van Bunge to Gibbs, SIX, Wah Wah! Low full toss and guess where this went Yep. A slap slog and it went over deep midwicket! He is going to go for 6 sixes in this over!
29.3 van Bunge to Gibbs, SIX, Carnage! Flatter one this time but it makes no difference to Gibbs. He just stands there and delivers. This one also has been sucked over long off
29.2 van Bunge to Gibbs, SIX, Murder! Floated on the leg and middle stump line and Gibbs sends it soaring over long-off.
29.1 van Bunge to Gibbs, SIX, Violence! Gibbs charged down the track and hoicked it over long on.

Re: Group A - Netherlands v South Africa

i read somewhere that Viv Richards called a challenge for someone to hit 6 sixes in an over and if they did Johnny Walker would donate a million bucks to charity

Re: Group A - Netherlands v South Africa

Herschelle Gibbs just smashed van Bunge for......36 runs in the 30th over. That's right, six sixes!!! Unbelievable powerful batting.

South Africa are 214/2 off 30 (of 40) overs.

Re: Group A - Netherlands v South Africa

And with 36 runs in one over, South Africa are 214-2 after 30.

Now it looks like they'll easily beat 300. And with more overs like this, maybe even approach 350, which would be pretty astounding for a 40-over game. (Though 350 still seems a bit out of reach at this point.)

Re: Group A - Netherlands v South Africa

The Dutch must has had South Africa in a tizzy at the start, but i see their piling on the runs now. They certainly don't want to be embarrased by an associate or worse a "minnow", no!, that just can't happen (being sarcastic here :) )

Re: Group A - Netherlands v South Africa

wow!!! six consecutive sixes, a record indeed. A splendid over.

Re: Group A - Netherlands v South Africa

30 runs in the final over!!!

South Africa finish 353-3

Suffice it to say, the Netherlands would have no hope of chasing this down in 50 overs, let alone 40.

Re: Group A - Netherlands v South Africa

So how much would they have scored if this were a 50-over match? Would they have put up a similar score, since with more overs, there'd be a tendency to bat a little slower? Or would they have reached 450?

I think they would've scored a little bit more than 353, but not a lot more.

Re: Group A - Netherlands v South Africa

Another total in the 300's. Unlike Bermuda's game, i'm sure the Dutch will surpass 78 runs. It will be interesting to see how many runs they end up with. South Africa is certainly keeping it tight though after 8 overs only 15 runs.

Re: Group A - Netherlands v South Africa

Well, it's 48-4 after 20.

The Dutch are doing a decent job of hanging around and not leaking wickets like water, but they sure aren't scoring many runs either.
