Haunting dismissal

Hey guys,

Last game, one of the bowlers (an offspinner) was on a hattrick and it just so happened that I had to face the hattrick ball. As most of you would've guessed, he bowled a ball (Just full of good length which I thought I could've played) and in my indecisive mind of whether to 'charge' up to the pitch of the ball or take a long stride (which is what I did), I ended up playing inside the ball and getting bowled. My questions are, what would you have done (noting that this ball just clipped the top of off stump) and how would you get this dismissal out of your mind, as everytime I think about it, it seems to be the only ball I can't play :S. Cheers.

Re: Haunting dismissal

welcome to the forums. I most like would of played back to it, don't ask me why I just seem to either play back to spinners or really far forward, Im not really a batsman though so I dont know how valid that is.

Just try to put it out of your mind and remember that each balls a new ball, Don't let it get to you, and most of all, dont let it affect your natural game, if your agressive, stay agressive.

Cheers

Re: Haunting dismissal

Without sounding stupid, I have faced a few hat trick balls in my time, coming in around 9 10 and 11. What I normally do is try and get my bat in front of the ball (whether pace or spin) and pushing it towards the ground. It works haven't been out on a hat trick ball yet. :)

To take your mind of it, I'd suggest try to think of it as just another time that you got out, or think of all the times you've got out playing foolish shots. You'd be able to stop thinking about it then. :p

Re: Haunting dismissal

My advice would be dance down the pitch, the only way to play spin is aggresively. This doesn't mean dance down and slog it, but just get to the pitch and kill the ball if you have to. Spinners strugglle most against batsman who use their feet and not for slogging, trust me I am one :D

Re: Haunting dismissal

Whenever I've faced a hatrick ball the key thing for me has been to play my natural game and more so, the ball on its merit. Try to only worry about the things you can control, rather than those you can't.

It sounds like you got caught in two minds and the ball did enough to clip the stumps. It wasn't your fault and really you should try to forget about it. You could face that ball 10 times in a row and come out with 10 different results.

The more you dwell on it, the more it'll play on you mind and you'll find that it's not just hattrick balls that become a problem but normal deliveries as well.

This is spot on . If you start thinking of it as a hat trick ball your natural inclination will be simple to not get out to it abd as a result play negatively . When you do that you start seconds guessing yourself and in the end will be caught in two minds , which is a dangerous situation for any batter . Play the ball on merit as you would at any other time .

A guy from our club hit a hat trick ball for 4 last season , it was a half volley so he drove it as he normally would . The thing is he didn't even know it was a hat trick ball but the point is he simple played it as he normally would .

Keep this is mind for next time , clear your mind and focus on the delivery not the situation you are in . That is the key , be it the first ball of the day , last ball or a hatrick ball your game shouldn't change drastically at all .

Re: Haunting dismissal

Thanks guys! I do see now that when facing a hattrick ball I shouldn't think of it as a hattrick ball because immediately, your brain tells you to block it and not play the ball on its merits. The batsman at the other end also said that because I got nervous, my bottom hand stiffened up meaning I was constricted in trying to play any shot. Thanks for your help.

Re: Haunting dismissal

Well i've face a double hat trick ball, i hit the bloke for six. Lol. It was a rubbish ball and it was like the second last over so it would've been different to what u faced but just play naturally and you'll be right.

Re: Haunting dismissal

Kevin,
There no way to feel bad as the top order failed in their role.
U tried ur best.
But yes as a lower order batsmen u have some responsibility and that to have a stand in the crease so that the other batsmen will score freely.
So it is better to have chat with the other batsmen and relaxing.
In such situtation if possible try to take ur own sweet time like walking slowly towartds the crease from pavilion, talking to ur batting partner after taking guard, observing the filed placements and gaps in between.
All this sort of things to relax ur mind and maybe that will annoy the bowler or fielders.
Enjoying these sort of moments with a smile will help u.

Re: Haunting dismissal

There are a few ways to play off spin, wait for it to spin then play it (.. alot harder then the others), come forward and play it at the pitch of the ball or stay in ur crease and play it off the back foot.

if it was his hat trick ball you'd probably want to stay in ur crease and play it off the back foot either flicking it off your pads or blocking. If it's anyones hat trick ball they will probably bowl it on the stumps.

GL in the future

Re: Haunting dismissal

Personally i would have hit him out the ground. Or got everything possible behind it!

Why would you play it off the back foot if it's just full of a good length?

Re: Haunting dismissal

Unlucky getting a decent hat-trick ball. Of the few that I've faced they've almost all been wides/leg-side pies from the bowler trying too hard

Same here. I've faced 3 or 4 hat-trick balls (our side is prone to collapse) and I've bowled two - and all of them have been wide!

Re: Haunting dismissal

LOL i had to face a hat trick ball on the weekend, and i immediately thought about this thread....

they ringed the bat which was no surprise, so i put it out of my head and took centre as i normally would. surprisingly i got a decent inswinging ball, which i just blocked out. angled the bat down and played with the full face to minimise the chance of a catch. i was expecting to get a full toss or or short pitched ball.. as mentioned earlier bowlers will try and search for that extra yard of pace.
