The countdown begins with less a fortnight to go. Played in Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh this is looking to be one of the most open tournaments for a number of years. The big guns are pretty evenly matched - all have their strengths but all have at least one killer weakness, whether it be lack of a top class spinner, out and out pace man or fragile batting.

The minnows are represented by Netherlands, Kenya, Canada and Ireland. All teams who are capable of raising their game to cause a shock.

babai_here - hope you don't mind but I've merged this in with main World Cup thread. I'd rather have everything in one place than two competing threads.

Great work guys. I'm looking forward to this World Cup, I reckon it will be the most even one we've had since 1999 in my opinion.

@ Richard, no prob dude.
I just wanted to make an Indian thread in the sub forum. But as you told me, its a single thread, so its better to keep them in a single thread.

Plenty of stuff to talk about in relation to India, they have to be facing a lot of pressure especially with it being a home tournament. How do you rate their chances?

India are certainly under a lot of pressure. Under performing at world cup's has been a problem for them for years. Australia are average and it will all hang on our ability to adapt to the conditions. The sub-continent has posed problems for us many times before and will again. Our side of the draw probably allows us to play our way in to the series but all teams will feel any failure. Yes it is bound to be the tightest world cup for quite a while.
babai_here, Australia have also appeared in two other world cup finals making it 6 out of 9 series we have been in the final, this is an impressive record and one we will struggle to hold this time round.

How familiar is THAT? Good start involving Watson and however else is opening, then a series of mad rushes of blood from the middle order which turns into panic by the bowlers.

9 wickets for 58 runs and a more dumb shot by Punter to get out I hope I don't have to see again in this tournament.

But it was really good bowling on a helpful pitch by Chawla. Fine work.

I know they are just warm up games but Australia need to find some form quickly, although at least Ponting and Clarke have made a few runs. I guess the good thing about going back to the quarter final format is all you have to do is belt the minnows in your group and you are through to the next stage..

Really rewards mediocrity.

Had a quick look and thought it was pretty lame tbh, although I'm never really a fan of that ceremony stuff at any time.

The groups are poorly structured for this World Cup, they should have had 4 groups of four and added an extra two minnow sides. I'm not a fan of minnows but the ICC needs to expand the game. After that they could have then had a quarter-final stage with the two highest ranked teams moving through.

It'd be the same no matter how the groups are structured. If it were four to a group with four groups all you'd have to do is win both games against the lower ranked sides and you'd be through. The problem is the minnows aren't strong, particularly the sides ranked lower than say 11 or 12. Even the associates need to play well and their opponents have a bad day to win.

The group structure doesn't bother me it's having quarter finals like 1996.

IMO it really should be something like the top team goes straight through to the semi and 2 and 3 just play off for the other semi spot making the group stage more competitive and meaningful, but we all know with the ICC it's all about $$$, they wouldn't want 2 less 'big' games.
