Intercontinental Cup: Kenya v Canada at Nairobi

This is Kenya's opening match of the 2007-08 Intercontinental Cup. Canada has already played 2, with a win over UAE and a loss to the Netherlands.

Canada struggled to a win over Kenya A in a warm-up match, and the full Kenyan side will be looking to show the gap that exists between them and this relatively inexperienced Canadian side.

Canada
AJ Chaudrey, Mohammad Iqbal, TC Bastiampillai, Qaiser Ali, AA Mulla, AL Kandappah, S Dhaniram, K Patel, U Bhatti, D Soraine, H Osinde

Kenya
MA Ouma, DO Obuya, A Obanda, SO Tikolo, TM Odoyo, CO Obuya, JK Kamande, N Odhiambo, PJ Ongondo, HA Varaiya, AS Luseno

Canada won the toss and decided to bat.

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Kenya v Canada at Nairobi

Good opening from Mohammad Iqbal and Abdul Jabbar Chaudrey. I don't think either of these two have ever appeared in an ODI for Canada, but they're doing just fine against the experienced Kenyan duo of Odoyo and Ongondo.

Canada 29-0 after 9 overs.

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Kenya v Canada at Nairobi

After a great opening partnership, it's all fallen apart for Canada.

They were 78-0 after 20.1 overs, and now they've crumbled to 97-5 after 26 overs. Jimmy Kamande got four of them for Kenya. Chaudrey made it to 49 before falling.

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Kenya v Canada at Nairobi

After being 121-6, there was a good partnership from Dhaniram and Bhatti to get Canada well over 200, so at least Canada was able to put up a somewhat respectable score of 263 all out. Dhaniram was high scorer with 78, Bhatti contributed 57.

Kenya batted for 6 overs at the end of the day, and Bhatti got Maurice Ouma for a golden duck to start things off. Kenya finished 8-1, and if Canada can get a few more quick wickets tomorrow, they'll make a match out of this.

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Kenya v Canada at Nairobi

After getting Maurice Ouma on the very first delivery of their innings yesterday, Bhatti has gotten Varaiya with the very first delivery today too!

That's weird.
Kenya 8-2 after 6.1 overs

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Kenya v Canada at Nairobi

The new batsman, Alex Obanda, is absolutely on fire!!

Kenya is 74-2 after 20 overs, and Obanda is up to 53 already, from only 42 balls!

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Kenya v Canada at Nairobi

Obanda finally out for a very impressive 83 (from 70 deliveries).

He got Kenya halfway to Canada's total, and David Obuya is still in there on 42.
Kenya 136-3 after 32, they still trail by 123 runs.

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Kenya v Canada at Nairobi

Kenya 164-3 at lunch, David Obuya is up to 56, Tikolo has 14.

They trail by only 99 runs, and seem poised to take control of this match. And at the very least, they should take the 6 points for having a first innings lead some time later today.

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Kenya v Canada at Nairobi

David Obuya falls for 72 runs. Kenya are now 4/194, trailing by 69 runs.

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Kenya v Canada at Nairobi

Tikolo just went out LBW bowled Qaiser Ali for 33

Kenya are now 5/219, trailing by 44 runs

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Kenya v Canada at Nairobi

Kenya finished on 393 which gives them a first innings lead of 130 runs. Thomas Oboyo top scored for Kenya, finishing on 103 not out. For Canada Bhatti took 5, Qaiser Ali took 4 and Dhaniram took 1.

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Kenya v Canada at Nairobi

After losing both openers in the first over, Canada has made a bit of a recovery to 71-3. They still trail by 59 runs though. They've got a ton of work to do if they want to put up a score that even has a remote chance of winning.

Kenya, on the other hand, are hot on the trail of the full 20 points.

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Kenya v Canada at Nairobi

Tea on Day 3 Canada lead by 75 runs with 4 wickets in hand. Just before the break Kandappah was dissmissed for 87 by Tikolo. If the Canadians can bat the day out anything could happen.

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Kenya v Canada at Nairobi

Canada all out for 229.

They only set Kenya a target of 100 runs, and Maurice Ouma virtually did it all by himself, scoring 71 as Kenya raced to 105-1 after 20.2 overs.

Kenya have won in only 3 days, and take the full 20 points.

Code:
           played w d l pts
Netherlands 3 2 0 1 34
Ireland 2 1 1 0 29
Canada 3 1 0 2 26
Scotland 3 1 2 0 26
Kenya 1 1 0 0 20
UAE 2 0 1 1 3
Bermuda 2 0 0 2 0
Namibia 0 0 0 0 0

So far I'm liking this 8-team round robin version of the Intercontinental Cup. It really feels like a wide open tournament at this point, and the final standings could really get jumbled all around by the time it's done.

The next match in the Intercontinental Cup will be almost as difficult for Canada, as they travel to Windhoek to take on Namibia in about 10 days.

Before they leave though, they're going to play two full ODI's against Kenya next week.

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Kenya v Canada at Nairobi

Can't at all see how these Intercontinental capers are doing anything to
advance cricket in the associates. Half the Canuck team couldn't make it,
and no one in Canuckland knows, or cares, their cricket team is lost somewhere in
Africa. Isn't doing the mudhutters much good either hosting these second
rate teams. But then, I'm sure Speedo's made it "well worth their time"
financially. Should be organizing 20/20 matches in Canuck baseball stadia
and heavily promoting them to Canuck public. But then, that would take
vision and about as much chance you'll find that with the ICC as an AA
card in Symo's pocket.
