Intercontinental Cup, Netherlands v Bermuda, Nov 21-24

This 4-day match is being played in South Africa. Apparently it's been raining pretty hard there the past few days, and the 4-days forecast calls for more rain. That's bad news for Holland. This match is a must-win for them if they hope to advance to the final, a draw won't do.

Bermuda is already eliminated, and will be looking to turn around some of the poor form they showed in Kenya. They might have a decent shot, since after their matches in Kenya, they've at least got a good amount of cricket under their belts and they should be in decent form. On the other hand, this will be Netherlands first cricket in 3 months, with a warm-up match rained out.

Netherlands prepare for must-win encounter
And the Netherlands coach Peter Cantrell revealed that the players haven't been able to have much outside practice. "Most of our guys haven't had a bat or bowl on grass since the end of August," he said.

But they do have some players hitting form. Daan van Bunge was one of the stars of the recent ICC Winter Training Camp in Pretoria, with three half-centuries in five innings against South Africa provincial opposition.

High stakes on the High Veldt

Pretoria weather the stuff of nightmares

Heavy rain on Saturday, accompanied by thunderstorms of near-apocalyptic strength, left the University of Pretoria ground thoroughly soaked, the covers having blown off during the afternoon downpour. The square was left in an unplayable condition, and with more rain on the cards on Sunday, ground staff will need to work hard to get a pitch ready for Tuesday’s Intercontinental Cup match against Bermuda.

Hapless Cann injured again

As you can see from reading these articles, the odds of geting a full 4 days of play in appear to be very slim indeed.

Re: Intercontinental Cup, Netherlands v Bermuda, Nov 21-24

Not surprising here, the start (scheduled for 45 minutes ago) has been delayed by a wet pitch.

Apparently the sun is shining though, so perhaps play can begin sooner rather later.

No play in Pretoria despite sunshine

By the scheduled start time of 10 a.m. the pitch had not dried out enough to allow play to commence, and the umpires decided to have another look at 11:00. The Dutch, understandably, were keen to get started, but the Bermudans took a different view.

For The Netherlands, needing an outright win to maintain their chances of reaching the final, coach Peter Cantrell included both specialist spinners in his side, giving a first-class debut to Pieter Seelaar. All-rounder Peter Borren is another debutant, but there is no place in the side for seamer Mark Jonkman.

The Dutch survived an unpleasant moment this morning, when Billy Stelling complained of chest pains. But it turned out to be a muscle strain, and he was declared fit to play.

The Bermudans did not include Lionel Cann in their side, and have gone for an attack led by fast man Kevin Hurdle and seamer Ryan Steede. They have just one specialist spinner, left-armer Dwayne Leverock.

Play is underway, and a good start for Bermuda.
Mukuddem got Zuiderant with his very first delivery.
He was one of the few bright spots for Bermuda in Kenya, and he's off to the perfect start here.
He was their leading wicket-taker in the Intercontinental Cup match with Kenya, and also in 2 of the 3 ODI's. Let's see if he can make it 4 out of 5.

Netherlands 7/1 after 4 overs.

These batsmen are really taken it up a notch. Maybe tthey are following the pattern of the Windies batting display against Pakistan hmmm.

Re: Intercontinental Cup, Netherlands v Bermuda, Nov 21-24

Put me down as a Bermuda supporter for this one. they could take all the pressure off a weakened Canadian side going into their match against Netherlands. De Grooth was just caught by Hurdle off Mukuddem, Netherlands are 191-2, surely ahead, but if you get any rain in a 4-day match it makes it challenging to get a result. Not that it bothers me....

Re: Intercontinental Cup, Netherlands v Bermuda, Nov 21-24

An absolutely massive wicket for Bermuda just a few overs from the end of the day. Ten Doeschate top edges one, taken by Minors and the ROCK!!! takes his first wicket of the match. Still a great innings for ten Doeschate, making 138 with 14 4s and 2 6s. Netherlands are 224-3 after 69.

Re: Intercontinental Cup, Netherlands v Bermuda, Nov 21-24

At the end of Day 1, Netherlands are 235-3 (73 overs).

They are surely on top right now, but it will be up to their bowlers as to whether they can win this match with the maximum 20 points and remain in the hunt for the finals. They will have to take all 20 of Bermuda's wickets to get the win, and with rain in the forecast for 2 of the remaining 3 days, it will be a challenge to do so.

Re: Intercontinental Cup, Netherlands v Bermuda, Nov 21-24

So here's my question: if Netherlands knew that they needed to pick up 20 wickets in this match to have any chance of winning, and they also knew rain was in the very threatening forecast, why did they choose to bat first? Why not force Bermuda to bat first and try to get a quick 10 wickets?

Now, thanks to Ryan ten Doeschate, they may be in the position to enforce the follow-on anyway, but at 235-3, it's far from guaranteed.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Was it a good idea to bat first or not? I would say it wasn't, although ten Doeschate's 138 may go a long way towards proving me wrong, especially if another one of the Holland batsmen can reach a similarly high score.

I'm not a cricket tactitian as such, but my take on it is maybe they have a plan to score a certain number of runs, say 350 .

The Holland can declare their innings, put Bermuda in and hopefully get the 10 quick wickets say for 200 or less,(It may be possible considering how they have been batting lately)

Force a follow on, get them all out again quickly, considering they have made up the deficit and has past the score posted. Holland can go back in to bat and make the neccessary runs to win.

Whether it was a good idea to bat first or not, i would say yes, if they have a plan to do what I described. Whether it would work, i really don't know.

Bermuda is already eliminated from the finals, so they have nothing to lose really, If it looks like they may actually lose, Bermuda may ended playing for a draw to save face.

I think this game may end up in a draw anyway, if the weather stays true to the forcast.

Re: Intercontinental Cup, Netherlands v Bermuda, Nov 21-24

Play is underway half an hour early today.
That's double good news for Holland. Not only do they get an extra half hour, but they're actually playing. Maybe the rain will hold off, and their decision to bat first will pay off. According to the commentary, it's a sunny day down in Pretoria.

Re: Intercontinental Cup, Netherlands v Bermuda, Nov 21-24

Leverock strikes about half an hour into play today.
Kervezee is out, Netherlands is 255-4
