New Zealand in Bangladesh

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

Well, Bangladesh have turned the game on its head. Slow bowler, Shakib al Hasan has destroyed New Zealand's batting line-up, taking 6/31 in a mesmerising effort and has left NZ in dire straits at 9/155, trailing by 90 runs.

Shakib took the first two NZ wickets, those being Jamie How and Jesse Ryder and then removed Aaron Redmond not long after those two. He then returned to remove Brendon McCullum, Jacob Oram and Kyle Mills, finishing with six wickets. Shakib's average was 104.66 heading into this game but has now dropped back to 38.33 in just one innings.

Daniel Vettori has carried the load for New Zealand with 48 not out, only Brendon McCullum's score of 25 is the only other score past 20. Vettori will be looking for as many runs as possible on day three and try and get his side closer to the Tigers first innings total. This pitch won't get any easier to bat on either so runs now may prove vital as the game reaches the latter stages.

Day 3 will be a good one. Can Bangladesh cause a major upset?

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

New Zealand added only 16 more runs on day three, Vettori finished 55 not out, a great knock to keep his team in the game.

It was the bowlers day again with Bangladesh finishing to day on 8/184 from 84 overs, another slow day with the bat. Bangladesh have Shakib al Hasan to thank again, his steadying 71 helped the Tigers to a reasonable position after he came to the crease at 5/71. Mushfiqur Rahim made 32 with Tamim Iqbal making 33 opening the innings.

For the NZ attack, Vettori has lead from the front again with 4/39 from 31 overs, anothe fantastic effort. Jeetan Patel took two wickets with Mills and O'Brien gettine one each.

So, Bangladesh lead by 258 runs but they only have two wickets in hand, you'd think another 30 runs would put this beyond NZ's capabilities as this pitch really isn't suiting the batters and day four will probably be the last day of the game. Not long now until Bangladesh either cause a major upset or go down again despite dominating for most of the game.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

New Zealand managed to remove the Bangladesh tail this morning but not before adding some very handy runs. Mashrafe Mortaza did the bulk of the scoring, making 44 before being the tenth wicket of the innings. Earlier, Abdur Razzak scored 18 before falling to Iain O'Brien. Aaron Redmond, the New Zealand opening batsman took the wicket of Mortaza with some of his part-time leg-spin.

Bangladesh were bowled out for 244, Vettori remained with four wickets, Patel got two, O'Brien two with Mills and Redmond taking one each.

New Zealand have started well in the chase, they are 0/5 in the second over, with the target score being 317. Jamie How's done all the scoring so far and has all five runs. The Kiwis will be in no rush either with 63 overs left today and 90 tomorrow, meaning they have a minimum of 153 overs remaining, that equates to a little more than two runs per over.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

New Zealand have moved to 1/86 in their pursiut of 317. Jamie How was dismissed for 36 after being bowled by Abdur Razzak but since then Aaron Redmond and Jesse Ryder have steadied the ship and are up to 29 and 15 respectively.

Still a fair way to go on day four, just under a session so plenty of time for something to happen. New Zealand have been very patient in this second innings and with a whole day to go tomorrow, they won't be in any rush.

An interesting stat, Abdur Razzak's bowling average is 103.25, hard to believe considering he is such a good one-day bowler.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

New Zealand looking good at stumps on day four. They are 2/145 and require another 172 runs with eight wickets in hand. It could have easily been one wicket though as Jesse Ryder ran himself out going for a second run with ten minutes of play left in the day.

However, the Kiwis are still in a pretty good position thanks to James Redmond's patient innings of 62 not out thus far. Redmond hasn't had the best of starts to his test career but he has looked good in his innings so far and he'll need to score more runs tomorrow for New Zealand to go closer to winning the test. Daniel Vettori sent himself in as nightwatchman and is 0 not out at the close of play. Essentially, Vettori is a handy batsman to have and has been batting pretty well of late and he will make Bangladesh's job that much harder tomorrow.

So, New Zealand in front at the moment but quick wickets will change all that. This wicket is not easy to bat on but an ability to play the right ball is what will end up deciding this game. If New Zealand can bat like they did today, they will win the test. Day 5 should be a cracker.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

Dumb question here. I'm new to cricket, and the test matches going on now are the first ones I have been following at all. So my question is, if New Zealand is able to come back against Bangaladesh, how big would that be? I know Bangaladesh is perhaps the weakest Test Nation, but even still, is 300 runs usual to come back from? It is unusual but not unheard of? Is it historic in scope? Thanks.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

It's a commendable comeback but not historic. Bangladesh have a history of choking, especially when seemingly on course for a victory.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

5 required from the last 4 wickets, and Ashraful just dropped Flynn. They probably would have been safe enough, but you never know!

Maybe not - NZ need 1 to win and Flynn (49) just edged to short leg! Mills in now.

Edit: Mills gets the single, match over... Great effort by Bangladesh though.

NZ's chase today was only the second time they have achieved a fourth innings target of over 300.

They chased well but to be honest they should have won by a lot more. Perhaps that tells us where New Zealand cricket is at the moment. Like mas said, Bangladesh have a bad history of choking, this test is just another example.

Still good work by the Kiwis though, they took their time and they chased the runs successfully but not before a few late jitters.

Vettori played another captain's innings, making 76 before being bowled by Abdur Razzak. Aaron Redmond was the first man out this morning for a well-made 79 with Daniel Flynn helping get NZ home with 49.

Razzak took three wickets and Shakib al Hasan snared two.

Good win to New Zealand after being outplayed for the first half of the match, they fought back well and have their captain to thanks after doing pretty much everything for the entire game.

Unsurprisingly, it was Vettori was named Man of the Match. The final test begins on October 25 at Dhaka.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

The game showed that to a point Bangladesh can live with New Zealand (especially on a home pitch) but they the knowledge of how to kill a game off and really press home any advantage.

Good chase by NZ but they really shouldn't have gotten near to a score of 300+.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

No play so far on Day One due to rain. The players are currently at lunch and there is a scheduled inspection due at 12:30pm local time (currently 11:57pm). No teams have been finalised either.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

Still no play despite the test entering it's third day. Day 2 was completely washed out due to constant rain and day three looks like it might suffer the same fate due to a soggy outfield and the covers being soaked with water. However, there is no rain falling and we may start in a few hours if no rain continues to fall.

The next inspection will be at 11am local time (about 35 minutes from now). Still no teams listed for either side.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

This will just turn into a practice match, unless they contrive to configure a result.

Both teams could forfeit and innings and then treat it as a two day, one innings game.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

Probably. It'll turn into batting practive more than anything and a few of the part-timer might get a bowl.

No play on day three either. The rain didn't come back but the outfield was just too wet for play and so we will have to wait till day four for play to commence. The next couple of days are expected to be fine so we should see some cricket played but this game will most likely finish up a draw.

Bangladesh field under sunny skies

Mohammad Ashraful won the toss and decided to field on a ground that was still damp, which forced the start to be delayed to 10.00 am.

Re: Bangladesh field under sunny skies

That good. It was good to see New Zeland on the back foot in the first test

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

Finally got a game under way but doubtful much will occur in this match. NZ need the batting practice but with a pitch that has been covered for god knows how long I doubt they are going to get it here

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

New Zealand are 3/49 in the middle of the first session. Mashrafe Mortaza struck in the third over, removing Aaron Redmond LBW for two. Two balls later, Jamie How was out, bowled by Mahbubul Alam. And now, Shahadat Hossain has struck, bowling Ross Taylor for 19.

Bangladesh on top early with Mortaza, Alam and Hossain all having one wicket.

Bangladesh XI: Tamim Iqbal, Junaid Siddique, Rajin Saleh, *Mohammad Ashraful, Mehrab Hossain jnr, +Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahbubul Alam (test debut), Shakib Al Hasan, Mashrafe Mortaza, Abdur Razzak, Shahadat Hossain

New Zealand XI: Aaron Redmond, Jamie How, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor, +Brendon McCullum, Daniel Flynn, *Daniel Vettori, Kyle Mills, Jeetan Patel, Iain O'Brien, Grant Elliott

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

Not long to go before the end of day four. New Zealand recovered from their early troubles to reach 6/262 before Daniel Vettori declared in the innings closed. The bulk of the scoring was done by Jesse Ryder and Brendon McCullum who scored a 137-run partnership before Ryder was out for 91. McCullum fell a few overs later for 66 before Vettori was out to Mohammad Ashraful for 22. Grant Elliott and Daniel Flynn batted for about 20 minutes before Vettori called them in.

The wickets were shared by the Bangladesh bowlers with Mashrafe Mortaza, Mahbubul Alam, Shahadat Hossain, Abdur Razzak, Shakib al Hasan and Ashraful all taking one wicket.

In replay, Bangladesh started slowly and are 0/13 in the 9th over. Tamim Iqbal has top score with eight not out.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

And just as I say that, Vettori brings himself on and takes three wickets in one over. Junaid Suddique charged Vettori first ball trying to smash him out of the ground only to miss. Brendon McCullum dropped the bal but recovered to whip the bails off. Very poor cricket from Suddique, very, very poor.

Two balls later, new batsman Mohammad Ashraful is trapped plumb LBW, leaning forward and the ball was absolutely going to hit the stumps. And finally, Rajin Saleh is also out LBW, ball was floated up and Saleh tried to come forward and was rapped on the pads with the ball hitting middle and leg. Umpire had no hesitation.

Bangladesh are now 3/13 with Vettori have the figures of 3/0. Amazing stuff. Bangladesh will be glad there's only one day left.
