New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

Two more down, Sri Lanka 80-7, they lead by 28.

There's still 9 overs to go in the day, so Sri Lanka will have to work a little if they want to hang on until tomorrow.

Of course, with the result all but assured, Sri Lanka may just give up today.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

Sri Lanka finished Day 2 at 125-8, a lead of only 73 runs.

Unless Malinga or Murali can hang around long enough for Sangakkara to build a semi-decent lead, this will be over soon enough. If they can get the lead over 100 though, this might go on past lunch.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

Malinga finally out for a 28-ball duck. It was a 44-run partnership though. :p
42 from Sangakkara, 2 from extras, and 0 from Malinga.
Go figure.

Murali came on and was looking to do the same thing, but he just hit a 4 right now. Sangakkara has been scoring consistently all morning though, realizing that ne needed to score as many runs as possible.

Sri Lanka are up to 161-9, a lead of 109 runs.

They're at least going to make New Zealand bat for a few hours. And heck, the way some batsmen have been falling in this Test, a win may not be a sure-fire guarantee for New Zealand anymore.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

Oh dear, Sri Lanka all out for 170. Not too unexpected, but look how it happened according to cricinfo:

53.1 Bond to Sangakkara, 1 run, OUT, what's going on here, Sangakkara whips that down to fine leg and the
single brings up his century, but Murali touched down at the striker's end, turned around and left his
crease to congratulate Sangakkara, the throw came in and McCullum whipped off the bails to run-out
Murali, what a way for the innings to end

M Muralitharan run out 8 (19b 2x4 0x6) SR: 42.10

At least Sangakkara finished 100 not out.

Sri Lanka have a lead of 118. New Zealand shouldn't find it too hard to get to 119, but if they lose a few wickets, they're going to be nervous for a while.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

Solid opening partnership took New Zealand to 58-0, but now How has fallen for 11 and Cumming just went down for a very useful 43.

New Zealand is 66-2, they still need 53 runs to win,
but it looks like that opening partnership was probably enough to safely put this one away.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

Oops, Sinclair and Fleming just fell now too, that's two each for Vaas and Murali.

New Zealand 73-4, still need 46 more runs, and we just might be heading for a tight finish here. Astle and Oram are the batsmen. Perhaps they should have promoted Vettori up the order since he performed so well against these bowlers in the first innings.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

New Zealand 119-5, they win by 5 wickets.
Bond seems like a likely candidate for man of the match, we'll see.
