Bulls fend off NSW

An inspired spell of bowling by Chris Simpson has helped Queensland overcome a lacklustre start to defeat an erratic New South Wales side by 24 runs in tonight's Ford Ranger Cup clash in Sydney.
Having stumbled to 5-74 in the first innings, the Bulls recovered to post a healthy total of 9-239, while the Blues, who lacked euphoria and determination in their chase, could only muster 8-215.
Simpson, who was earlier involved in a bizzare and controversial run out, finished with sparkling figures of 4-34 from 10 overs, his best one-day domestic career figures.
The home side suffered a setback early on, losing experienced opener Simon Katich (2) in the third over of their innings, with young-gun Mitchell Johnson cleaning up the stumps of the wandering international.
Phil Jaques and Daniel Christian then buckled down, combining for a 57-run partnership before it came to an end as Jaques (33) floated one into the hands of Simpson at deep-backwards square off the bowling of Andy Bichel.
Brad Haddin departed only 10 overs after arriving at the crease, caught by Ashley Noffke off Bichel, before Simpson claimed four-consecutive wickets, including those of Dominic Thornely (11), Christian (41), Aaron O’Brien (9) and Nathan Hauritz (4), which essentially ended the Blues hopes of a successful run chase.
Nathan Bracken (2) fell cheaply in the 45th over, bowled by Hopes, but Jason Krejza (52*) and Aaron Bird (10*) saw out the final five overs in a 40-run stand, helping New South Wales avoid conceding a bonus point.
Earlier in the day, the Bulls kicked off the top-of-the-table clash in poor fashion, losing James Hopes (2) and Simpson (0) early via run-outs.
Haddin cleanly took a Scott Doyle delivery to Jimmy Maher, which was wrongly presumed dead by Simpson, and consequently Haddin under-armed the ball at the stumps at the non-strikers end, to find Simpson well short of his ground.
The dismissal of Simpson brought big-hitter Andrew Symonds to the crease, who made his intentions clear from the get-go, as he and Maher belted 32-runs off Thornely’s first three overs.
The experienced pair combined for a much-needed 54-run stand, before the left-armer Bracken grabbed the integral wicket of Maher for 21, as the captain edged a seaming delivery into the gloves of Haddin.
Maher’s exit from the crease prompted a mini-collapse, as Craig Phillipson (3) and Symonds (44) both fell within the space of three overs.
Hauritz snared both wickets, as Katich and Krejza both displayed safe hands.
Clinton Perren and Michael Buchanan proceeded to steady a sinking Bulls ship, easing their way to 5-131 after 35 overs, only following a controversial video umpire run-out decision, which seemingly found Buchanan with his bat in the air, however, the number seven batsman was strangely given the green light.
The solid partnership of 76 came to an end in the 42nd over, with Buchanan (29) stumped off the bowling of Krejza.
Chris Hartley (9) was dismissed cheaply only four overs later, by the man-of-the-moment Krejza.
Ashley Noffke (28*) and Andy Bichel (26) marched on, boosting the Bulls final total to 9-239 with a quick-fire 50 partnership.
The Ford Ranger cup continues as the Blues will now clash with the Bushrangers on Sunday at Manuka Oval in Australia’s capital, while the Bulls will travel back to the Gabba to take on the Bushrangers on Friday.
