Shield Thread.

I was just looking at the Grade cricket results in Qld for a replacement for Khawaja, I saw a long forgotten player in Sam Truloff just scored a 100 and then realized Sam is still only 28, he must have been a kid when he first played. Did not realized Simon Milenko had returned to Queensland.

Enjoyed watching Weatherald's century he has always been borderline player but at 26 now this may be his year to step up. Very disappointed with WA's bowling with the exception of ex-Qlder or should I say international player Cameron Gannon. Following the display yesterday, I think it is safe to say that Qld V Tasmania is the only game to watch, I think Tasmania could make the result close, Bird and Siddle on the cracking wicket will be challenging so a 100-150 chase for Qld may be difficult.

They aint dropping their skipper. Betting he has a good record at the helm. He does tho need a better season that his last.. a piddling 204 @19 dont cut the mustard even if you are the captain. Weatherald is maturing nicely. Given that he is there to take the shine off the ball his almost @40 average last year backs up that maturity. An exceptional century by him and another handy opening partnership with Hunt. I can see these two being prolific partners over the next decade. I liked what I saw from Nathan Ellis too. This bloke's enthusiasm is infectious and he was one bowler that I saw reverse the Kooka. Tassie will regret not going in with a specialist spinner on a wearing deck. Gannon sprayed the ball a bit too much for mine. I had Kelly as the pick of the WArrior bowlers.
I did tho enjoy the epic battle between the Agar boys with Ashton winning by a TKO. Yes this match is shaping as a draw.. still you dont know, if Rolton Oval cracks up on last day anything may happen. I do know that the ginga ninja (Pope) will have wanted to bowl last on this track.

I missed this but evidently Marnus' first Shield ton in two years came with a healthy portion of luck.. dropped three times before he reached 30.. twice off Bird and once off Ellis. He sure made Tassie pay for the butter fingered Webster after lemons tho. Marnus says his fortunes took a lift when he changed to a less heavy piece of willow and set about plundering the hapless Tassie attack.

I cannot believe the difference between pitches of the 2 games, the players can see each other they are right next door, or is it simply that Qld and Tasmania have the better bowling attacks that they can produce a result

Big mistake by CA by not playing in Qld, every other sport has utilized Qld even the Netball, why didn't CA. Qld wickets are the best in Australia and 9 times out of 10 will give a balanced battle of bat an ball, and normally a result occurs. Gabba doesn't have to be used there are many other grounds.

Siddle and Bird may have been accurate but as of start of the third day they have the solitary wicket between them and Tassie need those badly.

Neser is playing T20 though 19 off 20 deliveries. Once 100 in front Qld may start throwing the bat. Much to be said about Street's performance he may have broken the back of Tasmania's bowlers, very Ian Redpath or Bill Lawry like.

Cant speak for other grounds but AB Field is as flat as these two.. probably more so.. and slower. Personally I wanted these games to be played in Tassie. They have result wickets too or so my Tassie mate tells me. I do know from experience that Blundstone is a results ground. IMO the best cricket wicket in the country. I expect CA chose SA as it is generous with its borders and it is smack bang in the middle of all the playing states.

Tasmania is still closed to mainland Australia, all states would have to go into quarantine I believe. And this is till Dec 1. Most Tasmania grounds are second rate, they may have 1 good ground in Hobart, another in Launceston, too big a bubble area.

You're thinking Allan Border field prepared for a Shield final or ODI's. It can be prepared as a fast pitch if needed. And can give good results

For that matter so can these two.. so can any pitch. I did not know Tasmania was still closed. You dont hear a lot from the Apple Isle re the virus.

I dont think it will be long before Mac Wright gets a gig. His leggies may come in handy on these decks. Not sure of his bowling record. Must take a look. You know?

I know a lot is being made of Riley Meredith because of an occasional T20 performance. Just not seeing it 20 overs 1/106, that's not an Australian test bowler by any standard. He's got speed but little else IMO. Should have played Bell, he is a very good bowler.

I've never seen Wright bowl, didn't know he could, But then again Renshaw and Burns bowl in T20's and effectively so who knows anymore.

Gannon strikes again 2/52 now making the other quicks in that game look pedestrian. You were questioning Gannon before, interesting fact he has a better average than Pat Cummins in Sheffield Shield..... Gannon 105/ 2633 Av 25.07 Pat Cummins 44 / 1142 Av 25.95 so explain to me how a player like Cummins maintains a CA contract for 2 years whilst he is out injured, highest paid Uni student ever.

Wright is probably described as a part timer.. much like Marnus, Webster or Head. The fact he can turn the ball both ways makes a leggie extra dangerous. He will remain a part timer if he dont get the chance to bowl in a game and prove himself. I will see if my mate can find any info on him from his Hobart PC club.

There are three express bowlers going round at the moment.. Meredith, Agar and this new bloke for the WArriors Lance Morris. Real fast men can get frustrated on these slow pitches. They know only one way.. to bang it in.

Had no idea who Brad Davis was so looked him up. He is obviously a late comer for the Redbacks at age 30 . Played two matches back in 18/19 then dumped. Makes this squad on the back of a strong PD last year and a century in an SACA internal game a coupla weeks ago.. Redbacks certainly need someone that can provide some stability in their middle order.

Macalister Wright Premier Cricket Career details.
  • Runs 7726
  • Batting Avg 35.60
  • High Score 173
  • Wickets 325
  • Bowling Avg 24.48
  • Best Bowling 7/34
  • Not too shabby a record with his leg spin.

Now seeing that, the bowling's not bad, but the battings a bit questionable for a call up to shield level, I always drop 5 points for the upgrade, so I don't know if at 30 he's ready.

Poor shots from Head and Cooper, especially considering experience, not a lot to come now Nielson is in.

If Qld manage 500 against Tasmania's bowlers, their odds of winning the shield have to shorten. Jimmy Pierson knows how to bat with the tail, he would not look out of place in the Australian side if injury was to strike.

Mac provides a pretty handy all round package. He is only 22 so his game is still maturing. His record since 2016/17 shows he was better with the ball than the bat . The longer he has played that has changed with his batting now his strongest suit. His bowling tho remains steady. He gets a bagful of wickets if he is given a decent bowl. So he can build pressure.

Dont knock Neilsen. He played a coupla handy knocks late last season. Not today Ashton Agar rolls him with a ripper.

At the moment Mike Neser is getting the Bulls into a very strong position. He looks every bit a batsman certainly not a tail ender.
Neser has been a fringe bowler for several of the last Test matches but cant seem to crack a starting bowl. This is probably pie in the sky stuff and CA cant see it but in Neser they have a worthy a bits and pieces bloke at #6 staring em in the face. His batting is certainly no worse than Mitch Marsh who occupied the @6 all rounder role for several years. Dont see any shield figures for Neser for last season but he had a big 2018/19 with 480 @44 and took 33 wickets for two past seasons. The last @17.4.

Qld 279 1st innings lead, I would have given 100-1 of that occurring. Neser with his first century. Amazing performance. I disagree with Neser at 6 for Australia, simply he replaces Hazlewood, who only takes 2 wickets per innings and offers nothing with the bat. What Neser brings with the bat, means he could bowl with an average of 40 and still bring more to the side than Hazlewood, but I know you'll disagree Baggygreen, but it is a logistical easy solution. It is up to Hazlewood to improve his wicket taking ability, 2 per innings is not enough, and his position in the side should be in question

Tassie will need to do something special it they are to get out of this one after Neser added some serious salt to the wounds of the Tigers.

Agar is now adding some good tweaking to his ton. Has four scalps.. will want a fivefor.

CA wont drop Hazlewood. Dream on friend. Pattinson is ahead of Neser on the pecking order. As Neser offers something substantial with the bat on top of his bowling he may slot in ahead of Patto as an all rounder. If any of the current three needs to go it is the eternally inconsistent Mitchell Starc. Mr tail mopperupper. Call me Baggers.

Agar gets his little brother and bags five. That is quite an effort for a finger spinner on this deck which is not providing great assistance.

4/5 wickets per match is more than acceptable. Like I say dream on as it wont happen.

Very like those two and Boycott as we both alluded to. Australian cricket needs more batsman that will not surrender his wicket without one hell of a battle. Bryce Street may well be that man. The fact that he does it in the vital opening spot translates to good starts.
