Should Harmison return?

Should Harmison return?

After appearing to show he still has it whilst playing in South Africa in his first game his figures looked quite impressive.

However there was the same only problem popping up with him giving away no balls and wides freely.

Is it worth calling him back though? Hes certainly a world class player on his day but he hasnt had his day for a long long while. However he was starting to show some of the class this summer just before he got his hernia injury. Personally i think they have to take him to Sri Lanka and i think he has to play as he is one of our few express pace bowlers.

What do you think?

Re: Should Harmison return?

Steve Harmison should only be allowed to return if he is at his unquestionable best. Steve Harmison is a very hot cold bowler and it all depends on his accuracy. When the accuracy is good, the weight is behind the ball (providing he is not using a quick fix method) and so he will have the bounce and guile. Alternatively, when he bowls inaccurately, the bowling is slow and he will get punished.

Usually, it does not take a rocket scientist to see which is occuring. However, only someone watching his bowling will know for sure, he can pick up good figures in domestic cricket because of his bounce so the figures can lie in this case.

The speed gun is also a good indication for his match fitness in two ways. If he is clocking over 90mph, then he has clearly got his biomechanics right and we can move on to checking the next thing and see just how consistant his pace is throughout a match or spell. If it decreases sharply, he is not match fit and it would be foolish to play him in a test match because his body would be fatiguing and this can lead to damage.
