Strauss recalls Matthews - Would you have done the same?

Minor incident in today's Champions Trophy game where Angelo Matthews was run out after colliding with Graham Onions.

Mathews had turned Onions into the leg-side, and set off for an intended two, only to collide with Onions, who had tracked back towards the non-striker's stumps, and with no apparent intent in his actions, was standing right next to Mathews as he turned blind on completing his run.

The appeal duly went up, which was initially given. Despite looking less than happy, Matthews trudged up only to given a reprieve when Strauss withdrew the appeal.

The question is would you have done the same, especially given the context of the game at the time?

I wouldn't have called him back, when little things in cricket can bite you in the arse and get you out or when umpires make mistakes, you take every positive you can and a run out of a dangerous player in whatever manner or lead up you take it, fast.

My team were playing an u20 quater finals against a team called ormskirk, and we had to take a young team like oldest player was 18. Ormskirk (premier side at 1st and 2nds,) had nick courts, a lancs 2s bowler, there 1st team keeper/opening bat and there 1st team number 4,,, so we wer in the shit to start with but we did well got a 112 on a bad batting wicket with a big outfield then we bowled well, but the main point, at 90ish with 16 overs gone there last decent bat went to take a run but got his foot stuck in a "crater" at the popping crease and snapped his right cruciate ligament, he goes down like a bag of shite, and his mates at other end whos gone for the run is stranded and we run him out. We should've called him back but we wanted to win more then please other people. But 2 wickets 1 ball, you take it.

Shocking decision by Strauss, lucky that Matthews went next over anyway but Onions never moved off his line, he may have moved towards the stumps but he stayed in a straight line, it was Matthews fault for running all over the place

I would've recalled him. Shows Strauss has a heart.

Shows Strauss is an idiot who is worried about his reputation instead of winning, then again he has already shown he is a crap captain

What next, we will recall a batsman who slips over?

He probably has thoughts of Collingwood going through his mind. Not in a Kirsten dossier way but what happened last year.

He admitted that afterwards and he also said he didnt see it happen either, so a decision influenced entirely by media

On one hand fair to him, shows he's sporting on the other, well, it could have come back to bite him.

It's a tough one, cricket is meant to be the gentleman's game but this is 2009.

The NZ one last year was probably worse, but neither worthy of a recall

From my viewing of it, Matthews ran around Onions then turned and changed direction slightly basically heading straight back up the line Onions was on, if Matthews had continued on the line he took for the 1st run then he wouldnt have collided but he changed direction, nothing else the bowler could have done

It's pretty much a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't.

The only thing it'll buy him is some goodwill but that's never a bad thing.

Yep, basically he is very lucky that Matthews went in the next over, if he had survived a few more overs and Sri Lanka batted out their 50 then they would have won

I think he's calling you and the Eddie guy idiots.

Struass was a dumb ass to call him back. The guy was looking good for runs we get him out then give him a 2nd life. MADNESS

Even the guys own coach or whatever Flower is says it was stupid decision.

Well done Strauss. More to life than cheating someone out. The only question is, if he would make this same decision if the Ashes depended on it?

Glad to see he lost his Mr Nice Guy by last night and refused Smith a runner, dont win being nice, just look at Australia

Think he was in the right with that one. Wasn't Smith only suffering with cramp?
