"The Rise and Rise of the Nairobi Nuggets"

The Rise and Rise of the Nairobi Nuggets | Reporter X Herald Sun

Look around the headquarters of the Nairobi Nuggets, competitors in the BCFCL, and you won't see a lot of fancy equipment. You won't see money, any the players don't turn up for games clothed in expensive gear.

They are, however, turning this season into one of their most successful, due to a hard work ethic and a burning desire to do nothing but win.

At the time of publishing, the Nuggets have unbeaten streaks in both forms of the game, having not lost since Round 8 in the one-day competition, and enjoying a vein of success in the Test competition also, having gone unbeaten since Round 8.

This success can more than likely be attributed to several players responding to the call from senior team member loopy_cam after the team's narrow victory over the Western Wizards in Round 8, in which the batting was nothing special, and the Nuggets' bowling attack saw them over the line.

Since then, the Nuggets have not lost a game, and have consistently racked up incredible scores, including a magnificent +400 in a day in Round 10, against the Madrid Magic.

This success has been spread across the entire team, but two batsmen spring to mind - and are currently fighting each other for a spot in the BC Senior Squad, touring in the near future.

Sean & Flawed Genius have heeded loopy_cam's call tenfold, and both are in some kind of form coming into the finals.

Sean's recent scores have to be seen to be believed - an astounding 462 runs from 8 innings at an average of 66 in the Test arena, including 3 half-centuries, 1 century, and a highest score of 140.

His one-day statistics are far from terrible, averaging 51.9 from 11 innings, scoring 571 runs at a strike rate of exactly 100. His highest score during that period - a scintillating 131, struck against the Kingston Kings.

Flawed Genius, after taking some time off to soul-search after a disappointing start to this season, has truly come back with form - batting from #5 in the order, he's made 351 runs from 7 innings at a competition-high average of 70.2, with a high score of 140.

Whilst the Test statistics are impressive, the one-day stats are even more so - a competition-high strike rate of 107.3 runs per 100 balls, the third highest average in the competition at 58.7, and 5 half centuries, including 2 innings finishing in the 90's, and a couple of not outs.

While these two batsmen have been in great form, cricket is a game you cannot win without a supporting cast - and on the off occasions that Sean and FG have not fired, the Nuggets have an outstanding batting, and indeed bowling lineups.

Players like SouthSwans, Benny, Jimmy & loopy_cam have all chipped in - all contributing at least half-centuries in the one-dayers, and in that demolition of the Madrid Magic, Benny & SouthSwans both contributed centuries - crushing centuries that put the game beyond reach.

However, you can't win games without removing the opposition's batsmen, and that's where the other half of the Nuggets kicks into play.

The Nuggets have a set bowling attack, and have used to to perfection in the Tests recently, bowling only the 4 players. However, the excellent mix of styles has proved a winner, with LJP86 & Weapons05/06 combining for 44 wickets, and Kram81 along with bluto11 joining forces for a further 36, including personal highs of 6 wickets for Kram, 5 for Weapon & LJP respectively, and a none-too-shabby 3 for Bluto, the Test bowling attack looks dangerous & deceptive all at the one time.

Most of their one-day success can also be attributed to the same players in the One Day arena, however - ONB, the one-day specialist leads all comers with 20 wickets - LJP & weapons not far behind on 14.

All teams need a wicketkeeper, and the Nuggets have found their man in ducks_fly_together, who has proved he is a more than handy batsman and gloveman, no doubt another driving force contributing towards the Nuggets premiership.

One thing's for certain - this team believes they can take out both premierships, and the other competitors are going to have a hell of a fight trying to wrestle the cups from their grip.
