Tournament layout

I must say I am looking forward to Sunday when the second version of the IPL is done. However I would like some ideas on the structure . Playing both "home and away" makes this tournament too long..

Split in 2 conferences? Knock out status .. ?? Thoughts please

The thing is this the NBA, NFL and the really successful leagues (and UEFA and EPL) have fine tuned their tournament layout. Yes, it is all about the money I do not disagree with that but the Cash Cow needs to be looked at.. and what is the difference between this and the Caribbean World Cup disaster.. ??
