I guess it was just a matter of time before something like this happened over there. I guess teams cant be blamed for not going there after all?

Re: Two Sri Lanka cricketers wounded in Pakistan shooting

UPDATE 4.12pm: AN attack on the Sri Lanka cricket team in Pakistan is likely the work of "well-trained terrorists", a police chief says.

Eight members of Sri Lanka's cricket team have been wounded after anything up to 12 masked gunmen opened fire on their vehicle in Lahore.

At least five Pakistani policemen were killed in the incident, the city police chief said, with another witness suggesting 25 policemen had been shot.

Pakistan Cricket Board security official Nadeem Iqbal said the team members were hurt near the Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore where they were being driven to play.

CNN has reported that one player is seriously injured after being shot in the chest.

Sri Lankan team manager Brendon Kruppu confirmed the incident and said batsman Kumar Sangakkara was among the injured.

Sri Lankan Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge named two injured players as Tharanga Paranavitana and Thilan Samaraweera and said they were taken to hospital in Lahore after the shooting.

Skipper Mahela Jayawardena was slightly wounded in the foot, his father told a local television station after speaking with him by telephone.

Gavin Scovell, a T V director, told CNN 25 police had apparently been shot, along with one official.

“We heard two very loud explosions before we heard gunfire," he said.

He said he saw Sri Lankan players being treated for “pretty minor” gunshot wounds.

He was told there was a “hail of gunfire” and no-one was hit directly, but many of them affected by grazing.

He also said the Sri Lankan Prime Minister is reportedly planning to fly he players out of Pakistan his private jet due to concerns about their safety.

Sri Lanka team media manager Charith Senanayake said he was told about the incident about 3pm Australian time.

While he was told about “riots” earlier near the stadium, he had been assured the team was secure.

“This is something no one could have predicted,” he said.

He said it is now “chaotic” in the area, and he had been unable to contact team officials for further details.

"We are assessing the situation,'' Pakistan cricket board chief Ejaz Butt said.

Security official Nadeem Sayeed told CNN two buses were attacked.

He said the attackers opened fire with rocket launchers.

Two blasts dispersed traffic before gunmen opening fire from both sides, he said.

He suggested none of the injuries were "very serious" and said the attack appeared "very well planned".

Security concerns have plagued Pakistan for years and some foreign sports teams including from Australia have refused to play in the troubled nation.

Australia postponed its full Test and one-day tour of Pakistan in March last year, citing security concerns.

The two nations had agreed to play a five-match one-day series in the Middle East later this year.

In February, Pakistan had suggested playing a Test series against Australia in England next year.

Latest:

Six Pakistani policemen and two civilians were killed when 12 masked gunmen on rickshaws attacked with guns, grenades and rockets.

The team bus came under fire as the players headed to the stadium for the third day of the second Test against Pakistan.

Thilan Samaraweera was one of those hurt along with Tharanga Paranavitana. Both are in hospital. Samaraweera has a bullet wound to his thigh. Paranavitana has a gash to his chest from shrapnel.

Those wounded with minor shrapnel injuries were skipper Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, Chaminda Vaas and Ajantha Mendis.

Samaweera scored back-to-back double centuries in this series, 214 yesterday and 231 in the first Test in Karachi last week.

The assistant coach of the Sri Lankan cricket team, Paul Farbrace from England, was injured by shrapnel.

It was previously reported that Australian Trevor Bayliss sustained minor injuries, but this is not correct.

"The bus came under attack as we were driving to the stadium, the gunmen targeted the wheels of the bus first and then the bus," Jayawardene told Cricinfo.

"We all dived to the floor to take cover. About five players have been injured and also Paul Farbrace [a member of the support staff], but most of the injuries appear to be minor at this stage and caused by debris."

Australian umpires Simon Taufel and Steve Davis were both in the convoy that was fired on, but both were OK, an International Cricket Council spokeswoman said.

"They are both fine and we are in the process of getting both out of Pakistan and back home,'' she said.

Match referee Chris Broad was also fine, however the spokeswoman would not comment on the condition of reserve umpire Ahsan Raza.
CNN reported that he was in a critical condition.

Re: Two Sri Lanka cricketers wounded in Pakistan shooting

The only you can really say is that teams that have refused to Pakistan have clearly been vindicated. I know that people have said that terrorists would respect cricketers slightly more than other groups but this is not the case any more and has wide repercussions not only for cricket in the country but Pakistan as a whole.

On the cricket front, they're not going play a home game for a long time, so had better get used to making a home from home in Dubai or Shahjah. I imagaine games in other countries will also be arranged.

The impact this will have is difficult to gague but you can bet that it will mean less money for the PCB and as a consquence less money floating through the system. Time will tell as to the exact fall out.

Looking at the wider picture and you can see that Pakistan is going to become isolated. Westerners are already wary about travel there, likewise certain nationals from countries in their locale. All this will serve to do is to put off the last few people willing to visit there.

In turn this plays into the hands of the attackers, giving them further 'reasons' to continue their 'war' and more propaganda with which to recruit.

It seems that Thilan Samaraweera is the most badly injured from the playing staff but it seems that the reserve umpire, Ahsan Raza, is in the worst way.

Re: Two Sri Lanka cricketers wounded in Pakistan shooting

it was just a matter of time that terrorists would use sport to further their political means, very poor form. this could start a full scale conflict between the two nations.

Re: Two Sri Lanka cricketers wounded in Pakistan shooting

its disappointing when you hear about this stuff. both pakistan and sri lanka have potential and are good teams. but these idiots have completely stuffed up any chances of pakistan hosting any more games in the future.

Re: Two Sri Lanka cricketers wounded in Pakistan shooting

It really is a sad day for the sport when terrorists try and target sports stars to make a point. My sympahies go out to the families of the people killed in this atrocity and to the sri lankan team.

Re: Two Sri Lanka cricketers wounded in Pakistan shooting

A truly disgraceful act and one that will have serious repercussions in Pakistan for a long time to come. The PCB can forget about any side travelling there for the forseeable future and can also kiss goodbye co-hosting the 2011 World Cup.

This will probably turn out worse than the Zimbabwe debacle at its peak, no person is going to want to travel there. New Zealand will no doubt cancel their plans to tour there pretty shortly I would assume.

Re: Two Sri Lanka cricketers wounded in Pakistan shooting

This was also Younis Khan's first test series as captain, and Jayawardane's last. Both wanted to leave with a bang, they did, just not the kind of bang they were expecting or hoping for.

It's really sad to see a cricket team targetted like this, but maybe finally the PCB will realize that human lives are more important than a game of cricket.

Re: Two Sri Lanka cricketers wounded in Pakistan shooting

And the conspiracy theories start!

ICC match referee Chris Broad has suggested that someone had advance knowledge of the attack on Sri Lanka's cricket team in Lahore and held back the Pakistan players' bus to keep them out of danger.

The Briton says he has no evidence of a conspiracy but pointed out that the bus carrying the Pakistan team in Lahore departed on its journey to the Gaddafi stadium five minutes after the Sri Lanka bus.

About a dozen gunmen attacked the Sri Lanka convoy, killing six policemen and a driver. Seven Sri Lanka players were injured.

Broad said that, although the teams travelled at different times in a previous test match, the buses had travelled together on the first two days of the second test in Lahore.

The Sri Lanka team was attacked on its way to play the third day.

"On the first two days both buses left at the same time with escorts," Broad told reporters following his arrival back in Britain.

"On this particular day, the Pakistan bus left five minutes after the Sri Lankan bus. Why?

Broad reiterated his view that the security was too lax.

"At every junction from the hotel through to where we were attacked and all the way to the ground, there were police in light blue uniforms with handguns controlling traffic," Broad said. "How did the terrorists come to the roundabout and how did they start firing and these guys not do anything about it?"

"There were plenty of police there and yet these terrorists came in, did what they had to do and then went again. It is beyond me."

Re: Two Sri Lanka cricketers wounded in Pakistan shooting

They told us the cricketers would be safe because it is like a religion over there. Well I guess they have now proved that it is a religion over there. Isn't religion behind almost every war or terrorist attack nowadays?

Re: Two Sri Lanka cricketers wounded in Pakistan shooting

Very sad indeed. It effects all forms of cricket in Pakistan, Pakistan womens had a NZ Tour happening soon and now its cancelled. Pakistan could lose the World Cup 2011 and it might not have a home in the international arena of cricket. Might only play at neutral venues for there home series and play away series. RIP for the people who died trying to protect Sri Lanka's team.
