WCL Day 4: NED v BER, IRE v CAN, KEN v SCO

Things are starting to become a little more clear heading into the 4th round out of 5 at the WCL in Nairobi. Only one team has been eliminated from finals contention, but 3 others are in must-win situations. The top two teams have their destiny in their hands, and meet in what could be a prelude to the final at the Gymkhana.

Time:All matches begin at 06:30 GMT

Netherlands v Bermuda @ Ruaraka
The Netherlands can keep slim finals hopes alive with a win here, against the bottom team in the table. The Dutch need two wins from two games, and some help from other teams in order to make it in. Bermuda just want to pick up a win at some point during this tournament, and wouldn't mind playing spoiler here.

Ireland v Canada @ Jaffrey's
These are the other two teams with an outside shot at making the finals. The winner will have a shot at making it, while the loser will be playing for pride on Monday. This should be a good one, as both teams should really want it.

Kenya v Scotland @ Gymkhana
This is the big one - tied at the top of the table with 6 points and the winner will go straight to the finals. The loser will still be able to make it to the finals by winning their next game, or by a combination of losses in other games.

That Ireland-Canada one should be good. It's got a lot at stake.

So here's a question, is the first tiebreaker head-to-head or NRR?

Seriously, it might come into play. Bermuda could beat Scotland or Canada could beat Kenya. Or both. Before you laugh, just consider that Bermuda beat Holland on the last day of the South Africa tri-series, and Canada beat Kenya on the last day of the Mombasa tri-series. That's two clear instances where one team seemed determined to try to salvage a bad series with a win, while a leading team let up on the final day. So it could very well happen here too.

I honestly don't know, nor has any source given that out. Even if it is head-to-head, the spots still aren't locked up. One such scenario: if Scotland beat Kenya and Canada beat Ireland and Kenya, Canada and Kenya would be tied on 6 and Canada would have head-to-head over them. In any case, I'm excited for tonight.

I like your analysis Cleazer, I know with Bermuda losing 3 straight games, I figure they'll come back with all guns blazing just to save face. They know they can beat The Netherlands if the desire is there. However we just have to wait and see.

We're underway, and the Netherlands have the best start. They won the toss, put Bermuda in, and Reekers bowled Clay Smith for a single run. Bermuda 5-1 after 2.

My goodness, Cummins still sucks!

Ireland 47-0 after 8 overs, with Cummins conceding 7 extras already!

I am offering anyone $50 to club him on the knee with a bat. I cannot comprehend how he is still bowling. The selectors should not select him. The coach/captain should not select him. The captain should stop him when he is giving up a million runs per over. And Bhatti is less effective because he doesnt' have Osinde to partner with him. Osinde's blind pace is a perfect foil for Bhatti's slightly slower, slightly swingier stuff. ANGRY WORDS!

Bermuda struggling against the Dutch.
They're 47-3 after 12 overs.


Scotland actually off to a competitive start against Kenya, 50-0 after 12 overs.
Perhaps the Scots can win this one and create a little pressure and drama for the possible rematch in the final.

After losing 3 quick wickets, Ireland is recovering here, up to 101-3 after 21. Canada will need another wicket or two here to slow down the Irish runs.


No updates from the Scotland-Kenya battle for 1st place, but last we heard, the Scots were off to a good start, at 70-0 after 15 overs.


Bermuda in trouble yet again, they've fallen to 98-5 after 24.3 overs against the Netherlands. Looks like the Dutch are on their way to getting that win they needed to still have a shot going into the final day's play.

Scotland starting to turn it on here, they've hit a number of boundaries off the last 2 overs.
Scotland 167-2 after 36.

And just as I type that, their big swinging leads to a wicket, Haq finally out for 71.
Scotland 174-3 after 36.4 overs.

Their first few batsmen have given them the start they needed though. Now it's up to the rest of the team to get them to something well over 250.

Hemp finally out for 58. That partnership with Cann was starting to hurt Netherlands.
Bermuda 156-6 after 33.2.

Thanks to Cann's scoring (35 so far from only 22 balls), it looks like Bermuda just might be able to post a reasonable total after all. They've still got 16 overs to bat through though, and they'd better use them all.





The partnership between Morgan and Kevin O'Brien is still going strong for Ireland. The Irish are up to 156-3 after 32 overs. Looks like they're going to force Canada to score heavily with the bat today if they want to win, and that's never easy against the Irish.

That 4th wicket partnership was a big one for Ireland. Canada are doing reasonably well in their chase, but 308 is never going to be an easy target to reach. Ashish Bagai made 122 before being bowled and John Davison (batting at 4) made a quick 57. The loss of Bagai is a big one at this point, leaving Qaiser Ali and Desmond Chumney to get Canada to the target. At present, they require 36 runs off 24 balls. With the Kenya loss, the winner of this one has a shot at the finals. Canada have Kenya next, so they can get themselves there!

Chumney, not a power hitter, has done his job to give Ali the strike, and Ali has taken the most of it! Ali is on 53 from 37 and Canada need just 7 runs from 12 balls!!!

It's over, Canada wins it by 6 wickets as Ali strokes the winning runs with 2 balls to spare. This is a great win for Canada as it sets up a chance to go to the finals - should they be able to beat Kenya! It must be some kind of a record for Canada for biggest target successfully chased. May even be their top ODI score?

How many thrilling, last-over matches is this tournament going to give us??? The ICC will be thrilled with the results of their baby!

wow, big win for canada. the dutch won too, but what was the final of the Ken/Scot match?

Scotland 254-8 (50.0 overs)
Kenya 177 all out (46.0 overs)

The Scottish bowlers took wickets consistently, and Kenya was behind the required run rate fairly soon. This was a good win for Scotland.




Ireland 308-7 (50.0 overs)
Canada 312-4 (49.4 overs)

Awesome win for Canada, led by Bagai's 122. He and his teammates ate up most of the Irish bowlers. This has been a terribly disappointing tournament from the Irish perspective. I actually thought they had a good shot to win the whole thing, but now they've lost 3 matches. Of course, they've lost all three in the final over, but they're still losses.




Bermuda 194 all out (46.3 overs)
The Netherlands 198-2 (43.1 overs)

Ten Doeschate scored 109 not out, and that target never really challenged them.

So Scotland has a place in the final wrapped up. And more importantly, a place in the Twenty20 World Championship with all the Full Members in September.

Now it's up to Kenya, Canada, and the Netherlands to sort out that last spot.

According to cricinfo, it was the highest chase for any Associate country!
