Winter Fast Bowling Training

Hiya guys, been thinking about my cricket alot recently, and been thinking that i really want to give it a real go, and try and see how far i can take myself, really put some effort into improving. I'm 17, nearly 18, but only been playing cricket for a year. I have quite a front on action, similar to that of Brett Lee, and i am desperate to improve my pace, and bounce. Last season i managed 11 wickets, and wasn't bowling with any pace at all towards the end, so since the end of the season i;ve been working hard to improve my action, and more importantly get my pace up.

I know that fitness is a big part of improving my bowling, so would like some tips for a fitness regime that i could begin over x-mas and continue throughout the x-mas period. My fitness atm, is pretty shocking tbh, i could probably bowl 6-7 overs maximum in a spell last season, without really putting any effort into my action or run-up, so if i am to start bowling how i know i have the potential to i need to improve my fitness. Also, what muscles need to be bulked up ? I don't have particularly large arm muscles, or really toned abs, and know that my shoulders will need to be bulked up in order to improve, but what other muscle groups need to be focused on ? Also, could you reccomend a set of weights that i could buy with x-mas money, cheers.

Also, are there any ways i can assist my bowling over the cold, wet winter period ? Or will it just be a matter of going to winter nets and working hard at them ? I can do abit of bowling in my garden, but only with a 4-5 pace run up, so i cant really do any real bowling at home, unless i jog upto the local cricket nets at my old high school, if they're still up. I'm just really determined to do well this season, and impress anyone that might possibly be watching, and you never know what will happen if i put the work in.

I'm sure that with the right levels of fitness, and rhythm i could bowl 80mph, off 5 paces i reckon I'm bowling at 60mph, much faster than i was last season. So any tips would be great. Thanks guys.

Re: Winter fast bowling training

King Pietersen - welcome to the forum, I hope we can help somewhat.

As for a fitness plan then you're best bet is to post in the fitness and nutrition area, where are resident experts, Liz and David (from Harrowdrive) will be able to assist further.

I would also advise having a look through some of the threads already in there or indeed on Harrowdrive, as they will be a great starting point.

Personally, I would prefer to do any pace bowling in a warm, dry environment, mainly due to the safety aspect (nothing worse then slipping when you're about to bowl) so would say that winter nets are the way to go.

Another good resource is the book by Ian Pont, (The Fast Bowler's Bible) - more information can be found at http://www.maverickscricket.com. I believe that one of our coaches, leggeb4 has taken the ABSAT course which Ian runs so should be able to help out further.

I'll post more later but I agree about this book, it's brilliant and easy to understand.
