a) give him functional strength

I would point out that anyone who reaches a decent level of strength in the gym (amount of weight lifted) will most likely eventually get injured and have injuries. Mayb this happened to watson ? mayb not. Most strong people(trained) will be walking around...

With regards to bringing up his pace- how much more important was working on his action over bringing his fitness and power levels?
with the speeds you are talking about him acheiveing (100mph) is he immensely strong and powerful?
