1st Test: India vs Pakistan at New Delhi

The test series is underway with India taking on Pakistan in this first encounter. The one-dayers ended up 3-2 and this series is also expected to be close with both teams evenly matched.

This match is Anil Kumble's first game in charge after being appointed as captain. The usual suspects are back for either side. Jaffer, Karthik, Kumble and Patel for the Indians with Hameed, Akmal, Sami and Kaneria for the Pakistan side.

India XI: W Jaffer, KD Karthik, R Dravid, SR Tendulkar, SC Ganguly, VVS Laxman, +MS Dhoni, *A Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, Z Khan, MM Patel

Pakistan XI: Salman Butt, Yasir Hameed, Younis Khan, *Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Yousuf, Misbah-ul-Haq, +Kamran Akmal, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Sami, Sohail Tanvir, Danish Kaneria


Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat. They lost Salman Butt early for a labourious 1 off 20 balls, he was bowled by Zaheer Khan.

Pakistan are 1/26, Yasir Hameed has 15 of those runs. His teammate Sohail Tanvir is making his test match debut.

Pakistan 8/210 at stumps. If it weren't for some stout resistence by Misbah-ul-Haq and Mohammad Sami, Pakistan could have well been bowled out.

There were a few starts in the Pakistan batting card but no-one could really get started, the exception though was Misbah who is 71 not out. Mohammad Sami is 20 not out, he grew in confidence at the end of the day as India were wicketless throughout the final session.

Anil Kumble picked up 3/36 and Zaheer Khan snagged two wickets.

India are still in front you'd think but Cricinfo are saying that 250 is a competitive score so things may be closer than they seem.

Pakistan were bowled out for 231, Misbah was run out early and Danish Kaneria was bowled for a second ball duck by Kumble. Kumble claimed four wickets at the close of the innings.

India are 6/228 at stumps. Laxman is 57 not out with Dhoni making 57 before falling to Kaneria. Dravid and Jaffer also made the 30's before getting out. Shoaib Akhtar and Sohail Tanvir are the multiple wicket getters with two each.

India were all out for 275, Laxman made it to 72 not out with Dhoni not adding to his score on Day 3. Danish Kaneria cleaned up the tail to finish with good figures of 4/59.

Pakistan, in their second innings are 6/227, a lead of 182 runs. Salman Butt scored 67, Yasir Hameed 36 with Misbah-ul-Haq 31 nout out. Pakistan were 5 wickets down at the end of Day 3 but Kamran Akmal fell in the first full over of Day 4 for 21.

Anil Kumble has bowled well again with 3/61 so far.

India need only 32 more runs to win the match with 7 wickets in hand, close to end of day 4 here. Barring any unforeseen collapse, it looks like this match is in the bag for India.

And that's where it stayed. 32 runs will be needed on the final day with India 3/171. Sachin Tendulkar 32 not out with Sourav Ganguly on 48. Wasim Jaffer made 53 early on and Dravid 34.

Shoaib Akhtar has bowled beautifully, taking 3/41.

Earlier, Pakistan were all out for 247. The tail fell apart, Misbah-ul-Haq departed for 45 and the rest of the innings was wrapped up rather quickly.

India won by 6 wickets. Akhtar got Ganguly for 48, Tendulkar got 56 not out and Laxman got 6 not out.
